Product description

The amber glass jar with a volume of 15 ml is supplied as a ready-made set with an aluminium lid and an inner liner, so it can be filled and closed straight away. The amber glass limits the access of light, which you will appreciate with contents containing vegetable oils, essential oils or active ingredients that lose their effectiveness in light. The small volume suits products that are dispensed in small amounts: balms, eye creams, ointments, solid perfumes and concentrated creams. The set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products.

What the set consists of

  • Amber glass jar, 15 ml – the body of the packaging, made of glass that does not react with oils, essential oils or alcohol-based contents and can be washed repeatedly.
  • Aluminium lid, 42 mm – a silver screw-on lid with an EPE sealing liner that sits on the neck and seals the contents.
  • Inner liner, 42 mm – a white PP disc that is placed on the surface of the filled contents under the lid. It covers the surface of the product so that it does not touch the lid and so that the contents do not smear onto the thread if the jar is turned upside down.

What it is suitable for

Glass withstands fats, waxes and essential oils without changing itself or absorbing their scent, so the jar is particularly suitable for anhydrous products: lip balms, massage balms, herbal ointments, solid perfumes, petroleum jelly creams and body butters. It also works for creams and gels with a water phase, provided they are properly preserved. The 15 ml volume is often used for travel packs and for samples that you want customers to try before buying a larger pack. The wide opening of the jar makes it easy to pour liquid balms and to press in thicker ointments with a spatula.

Nominal and total volume

The nominal volume is the amount the jar is designed to hold when filled normally. The total brimful volume stated in the parameters is the physical volume up to the neck. The difference provides a reserve for the inner liner, the lid seal and the expansion of the contents with temperature changes. Therefore, fill up to the nominal volume. For balms that are poured hot, also allow for the mass dropping slightly once it solidifies, so that the liner still has something to sit on.

Pour hot wax balms into a jar warmed to room temperature or slightly warmer. Cold glass can crack on sudden contact with a hot mass, and the balm will solidify unevenly on a cold wall.

Good to know

Before the first filling, wash the jar and the liner, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave them to dry completely. It is enough to wipe the lid; do not soak it. Follow the same procedure for every reuse. Glass can also be washed in hot water, which is an advantage over plastic jars.

The inner liner is inserted only after the contents have solidified or settled. For creams with a water phase, press it down so that no air remains under it; for solid balms it is enough to place it on the surface. The customer sets it aside when using the product, so it is worth testing that it can be removed comfortably from a full jar.

The aluminium lid does not need to be tightened with force; the seal seats properly when the lid is screwed on normally. Over-tightening compresses the sealing liner and the lid then becomes harder to open.

The set is not approved for contact with food. The declaration of suitability applies only to cosmetic products; do not use the set for homemade syrups, butters or spices.

Closures with the same neck type are also available separately in the Handymade range. If you combine the jar with a different lid, check the tightness with your specific formulation.

Once the contents have been used up, the glass belongs in glass waste, the aluminium lid with metals and the PP liner with plastics. Take the set apart so that the individual materials can be sorted.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 15 ml amber glass jar protect its contents from light?
Yes, amber glass limits the access of light to the contents, although it does not block it completely. For balms with vegetable oils, essential oils or vitamins, this is an advantage over clear glass. You can achieve fuller protection by storing the jar in a box or out of direct sunlight.
Is the 15 ml glass jar suitable for balms with essential oils?
Yes, glass does not react with essential oils and does not change. Inside the jar, the contents are in contact only with the glass and, once closed, with the PP liner, which is a common material in cosmetics. With high concentrations of essential oils or with alcohol-based contents, check whether the liner and the EPE seal of the lid soften or absorb scent over time.
How much cream fits into a jar with a nominal volume of 15 ml?
For normal filling, allow for 15 ml, which is the volume the jar is designed for. More will physically fit inside, but the space above the surface is needed for the inner liner and the lid seal. The weight of the filling depends on the density of the product; with a wax balm it is usually higher than with a light gel.
Can the glass jar with an aluminium lid be reused?
Yes, the set is designed for repeated use. The glass is washed with hot water and disinfected with alcohol, and the PP liner likewise. It is enough to wipe the aluminium lid; do not soak it. Before each new filling, dry all parts thoroughly, because residual moisture does not belong in an anhydrous balm.
Can I pour hot balm into the glass jar?
Yes, the glass withstands the temperature of a liquid wax balm, but thermal shock must be avoided. Before pouring, let a cold jar warm up to room temperature or warm it slightly, otherwise it may crack. Put on the lid and the liner only after the balm has cooled completely, so that no steam condenses under them.
