Product description

This amber glass roll-on bottle with a volume of 5 ml is designed for small amounts of oil-based perfumes, aromatherapy blends and oils for the skin or lips, which are applied directly to the skin with a roller ball. The set includes an amber glass bottle, a plastic roller ball and a black plastic cap, so once filled the packaging is ready to use. Amber glass reduces the amount of light reaching the contents and helps protect light-sensitive formulations, such as blends with essential oils or carrier oils prone to oxidation.

All three components of the set are declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products, and the declaration of conformity is provided with the product. The set is intended for cosmetics. None of its components is approved for contact with food.

What it is suitable for

The small volume and the roller ball make sense for products that are applied in small amounts and often:

  • Oil-based perfumes – fragrance diluted in a carrier oil is applied to the wrists or neck in a thin layer without spilling.
  • Aromatherapy blends – essential oils diluted in a carrier oil for the temples, the back of the neck or the wrists.
  • Lip oil or cuticle oil – the roller ball spreads a small amount exactly where it is needed.
  • Samples and testers – 5 ml is enough to try out a fragrance or an oil blend before making a larger batch.

The roller ball is intended for contents with low to medium viscosity. A thick gel or a solid balm will not roll through it, so a jar or a stick is more suitable for such textures.

Filling and assembly

Before the first filling, the bottle is washed, disinfected with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and left to dry completely. The roller ball and the cap are treated in the same way. The contents are poured into the empty bottle, and only then is the roller ball pressed into the neck and the cap screwed on. A small syringe or a dropper helps with precise pouring into the narrow neck.

The nominal volume is the amount the packaging is designed for under normal filling. The total brim-full volume is larger, because the bottle needs space for the roller ball inserted in the neck and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. For this reason, fill the bottle up to the nominal volume, not to the brim.

If the bottle is filled right up to the neck, part of the contents is pushed out when the roller ball is pressed in. Leave free space below the neck and press the roller ball into the already filled bottle.

Good to know

Glass tolerates both carrier and essential oils well. The roller ball and the cap are made of polypropylene (PP), which is commonly used for cosmetic closures. Essential oils are filled into a roll-on diluted in a carrier oil. For blends with a high proportion of essential oils or for alcohol-based perfumes, we recommend checking the behaviour of the plastic parts with your specific formulation, and checking the tightness after several days of storage lying on its side.

The roller ball also dispenses water-based or alcohol-based contents, but at low viscosity they leak more easily around the ball. Before making a larger batch, it is advisable to fill a single bottle and test whether the contents leak when carried in a bag.

The bottle can be used repeatedly. The roller ball is carefully prised out of the neck, and all parts are washed and disinfected. For recycling, glass is sorted separately and the plastic parts belong with plastics.

Frequently asked questions

Does an amber glass roll-on protect the contents from light?
Yes, amber glass reduces the amount of light reaching the contents and thereby slows the changes that light causes in sensitive ingredients. It is therefore suitable for blends with essential oils, oil-based perfumes and carrier oils prone to oxidation. Glass does not provide complete protection from light, so the packaging should still not be left in direct sunlight.
How full should a 5 ml roll-on bottle be?
Fill it approximately up to the nominal volume of 5 ml, not to the brim. There must be room above the surface for the roller ball, which is inserted into the neck and takes up part of the space, and a reserve for the expansion of the contents in warm conditions. Overfilling leads to spillage when the roller ball is pressed in or to leaking around it.
Is a glass roll-on suitable for essential oils?
Yes, a roll-on is a common format for essential oils diluted in a carrier oil. Glass does not react with essential oils, and the amber colour protects them from light. The roller ball and the cap are made of PP plastic. For blends with a high proportion of essential oils, we recommend checking the tightness and the behaviour of the plastic parts on a single bottle first.
Can a roll-on be filled with an alcohol-based perfume or water-based contents?
It can, with the caveat that thin contents leak around the roller ball more easily than oils. Before filling several bottles, we recommend testing for leaks over several days, with the bottle lying on its side and carried in a bag. With alcohol-based perfumes, it should also be checked whether the plastic roller ball and cap change their properties with prolonged contact.
Can a glass roll-on be reused?
Yes, the glass bottle can be reused. The roller ball is carefully prised out of the neck, and all parts are washed, disinfected with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and left to dry. A roller ball that is damaged during removal or no longer holds well in the neck is better replaced with a new one.
