Product description
The amber glass roll-on bottle with a nominal volume of 10 ml is used for filling oil-based perfumes, blends of essential oils in a carrier oil and other liquid preparations that are applied to specific spots such as the wrists, temples, neck or décolleté. Amber glass protects the contents from light, which you will appreciate especially with fragrance compositions and essential oils that lose their scent and stability in light. The roller ball spreads only a thin layer, so the packaging suits concentrated and more expensive blends, where it makes sense to dispense a little at a time.
The kit contains an amber glass bottle, a plastic roller ball made of polypropylene and a silver cap made of polypropylene and aluminium. Once filled, the packaging is ready for your own use, for gifting or for sale. All three components are declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products, and the kit is intended for cosmetics.
What it is suitable for
- Oil-based perfumes – a fragrance composition or essential oils diluted in jojoba, almond or fractionated coconut oil. The roller ball applies the perfume precisely to pulse points without spilling.
- Aromatherapy blends – diluted essential oils for the temples or the back of the neck, which are used several times a day and carried with you.
- Cuticle oil – a small amount of oil applied to the nail edge is dispensed better with a roller ball than from a bottle with a dropper.
- Spot serums and face oils – liquid preparations for smaller areas, for example around the eyes or lips.
- Samples and travel packs – the small packaging is easy to carry and is also suitable for customer samples.
How to fill a roll-on
The bottle is filled without the roller ball, ideally with a dropper or a small funnel, so that the contents do not run down the thread. After filling, the roller ball is inserted into the neck and pressed in until it sits firmly. The cap is then screwed on, which also protects the roller ball from being pressed accidentally in a bag. When you first turn the packaging upside down, it takes a moment for the contents to wet the roller ball and start spreading.
Only liquid preparations pass through the roller ball. Oils, alcohol-based perfumes and thin serums flow freely, while thicker gels or creams cannot be spread by the roller ball and the packaging becomes clogged. If the formulation contains a thickener, we recommend testing how it behaves in a roll-on before filling a whole batch.
Fill the bottle up to the nominal volume, not to the brim. Space must remain above the liquid level for the roller ball, otherwise part of the contents will be pushed out when it is pressed in.
Nominal and brimful volume
The nominal volume is the amount the roll-on is designed for under normal filling, and this is the figure stated on the finished product. The brimful volume is the physical volume of the bottle up to the neck. The difference between them is a reserve for the roller ball and for expansion of the contents in warm conditions. The bottle is therefore filled up to the nominal volume.
Good to know
Before the first filling, the bottle, roller ball and cap are washed, disinfected with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and left to dry completely. Residual water in an oil-based perfume could make the contents cloudy and shorten their usability.
Glass does not tolerate sudden changes in temperature. Warm blends, for example after melting solid ingredients, are left to cool to room temperature before filling. The contents then also expand less and the roller ball seats more easily.
Tightness depends on the roller ball being seated correctly and the cap being tightened. With alcohol-based perfumes and thin oils, we recommend checking that the packaging does not leak when carried lying down, and storing finished roll-ons upright.
The packaging can be reused. The glass can be washed and disinfected without limit, and the plastic roller ball and cap are rinsed with alcohol. Strong fragrances are harder to remove from plastic, so when switching to a different fragrance we recommend replacing the roller ball with a new one. The roller ball is the same for roll-on bottles of both 5 ml and 10 ml, and you can find replacement roller balls and caps for the same neck type in the Handymade range.
If your own contents have a higher proportion of essential oils or solvents, check how the plastic parts behave with your specific formulation. The glass is resistant to them, while the roller ball and cap are made of polypropylene.
Once empty, the glass bottle belongs in glass recycling. The roller ball is sorted as plastic, and the cap combines polypropylene and aluminium.
