Product description
The silver glossy dropper with a length of 53 mm is a closure with drop-by-drop dispensing, designed for bottles with an 18/410 neck. It is suitable wherever the product is used in small quantities and precise, clean dispensing matters: for facial serums, oil blends, tonics or concentrated active ingredients. The contents are drawn up by squeezing the bulb and dispensed directly onto the skin or into the palm, without pouring and without finger contact with the remaining product.
The dropper is suitable for contact with cosmetic products. It can be used in home manufacturing as well as in small batches intended for sale.
How the dropper works and which products it suits
The dropper consists of three functional parts: a screw cap with a glossy aluminium shell, a white silicone bulb and a glass tube. The tube and bulb come into contact with the contents. The silver shell gives the bottle a finished product appearance.
Squeezing the bulb expels air from the tube; when released, the contents are drawn in. The amount is then controlled by gentle pressure, from individual drops to the full contents of the tube.
It works best with thin to medium-viscosity liquids:
- Oil serums and oil blends – with oils, a few drops are enough for one application, and drop dispensing helps avoid using more than needed.
- Water-based serums and tonics – dispensing without pouring is clean and economical.
- Active ingredient concentrates – with more expensive raw materials, the dropper allows taking only as much as is actually used.
Thick gels, creams and emulsions are drawn into the tube with difficulty and incompletely. For these, a pump or jar is more suitable.
Choosing a bottle and filling
The dropper is paired with bottles with the same neck type, as listed in the specifications. Suitable bottles and ready-made dropper-bottle combinations are available at Handymade. For a custom pairing, we recommend verifying the seal, dispensing, and closure behaviour with the specific formulation.
The tube length is also important. It should reach just above the bottom of the bottle so that the contents can be dispensed down to the last drop, yet it must not rest against the bottom. If it does, the cap cannot be tightened and the glass may crack.
The bottle is filled to the nominal volume, not to the rim. The nominal volume is the quantity the container is designed for under normal filling conditions; the total volume extends to the top of the neck. The difference between the two provides clearance for the dropper tube, which displaces some contents when inserted, and for expansion of the contents with temperature changes.
What is useful to know
Before first use, wash the dropper in warm water with washing-up liquid and draw and expel clean water through the tube several times. Then disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allow it to dry completely, including the inside of the bulb. Any remaining water in the bulb would enter the product on the first draw, which is undesirable particularly with anhydrous oil serums.
The glass tube is fragile. Always insert the dropper into the bottle vertically and without force, and protect it from knocks when cleaning.
The silicone bulb may soften or swell with prolonged contact with undiluted essential oils or solvents. With formulations containing a high proportion of these ingredients, we recommend verifying compatibility on a test sample and storing the bottle upright so that the contents do not remain in the bulb.
Each time contents are dispensed, air enters the bottle and the tube may touch the skin. Water-based formulations therefore require effective preservation, and oil blends sensitive to oxidation benefit from the addition of an antioxidant. It is best to dispense drops from a short height, without the tube touching the skin.
The dropper is made from multiple materials. Before sorting for recycling, it is advisable to separate the glass tube from the cap and bulb.
