Product description

Plastic lip balm container is designed for filling with a molten mass of waxes, butters and oils, which solidifies inside once cooled. It is suitable for home use and small-batch production of solid balms, treatment lip sticks and lightly tinted balms. The transparent material reveals the colour of the contents, which is particularly useful for tinted and naturally coloured formulations where the shade is part of the result.

The container is suitable for use with cosmetic products and complies with the relevant regulatory requirements. The declaration of suitability can be found in the product parameters. The container is sourced from the European Union.

Why choose this container

  • Transparency – the colour of the balm is visible from the outside, variants are easy to distinguish without a label, and the customer can see exactly what they are buying.
  • Light weight and durability – the plastic will not break if dropped or in a bag, which matters for a product carried daily.
  • Practical filling – the molten mass is poured directly into the container and sets inside it, with no need for pouring into moulds or reshaping.

Filling and working with the container

The balm is prepared by hot process: waxes, butters and oils are melted in a double boiler and blended. After adding heat-sensitive ingredients (vitamin E, essential oils, fragrances), the mass is poured into the container. Allow it to cool slightly before pouring so that it is still liquid but not overheated. Plastic tolerates a warm mass better than a directly boiling mixture, and the contents lose fewer volatile components.

Fill the mass to the nominal volume, not to the very rim. The nominal volume is the amount the container is designed for under normal filling conditions. The total capacity to the brim is larger, and the difference provides a margin for the closure and for the behaviour of the contents during setting. Solid balms contract slightly as they cool, and a small depression may form in the centre. It helps to fill the container in one pour and let it set at room temperature away from draughts. Rapid cooling in a refrigerator increases the risk of cracks and an uneven surface.

When filling a series of pieces, prepare the containers open in a row and fill them in sequence from a small pouring vessel. If the mass begins to set in the meantime, reheat it briefly — but not repeatedly — to avoid damaging heat-sensitive ingredients.

Before the first fill, rinse and sanitise the container with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allow it to dry completely. An anhydrous balm requires no preservation precisely because it contains no water. Any moisture left in an incompletely dried container would undermine this advantage.

Which formulations are suitable

  • Classic lip balms – blends of beeswax or plant waxes with shea butter, cocoa butter and oils. A firm consistency holds its shape well in the container.
  • Tinted balms – the transparent container shows the shade from pigments, mica or natural colorants, so colour variants are distinguishable even without labelling.
  • Treatment sticks – targeted balms for dry patches, cuticles, or protection against wind and cold.
  • Vegan formulations – with candelilla or rice bran wax. These blends vary in hardness, so adjust the wax ratio to ensure the balm neither slides in the container nor becomes brittle.

The container is intended for anhydrous, solid or semi-solid masses. It is not suitable for liquid lip glosses or oils, which require containers with an applicator or dropper.

Good to know

Plastic is compatible with common cosmetic oils and waxes without issue. For formulations with a high proportion of essential oils or with the use of solvents, we recommend testing the container's behaviour on a single piece first. Some concentrated ingredients may gradually soften or cloud the plastic over time.

Transparency has a downside: the contents are exposed to light. Store balms containing sensitive oils and no antioxidant away from direct sunlight, or supplement the formulation with vitamin E. For contents that are particularly sensitive to light, an opaque or coloured container is the better choice.

The container can be reused after thorough cleaning. Residues of solidified balm can be removed by warming the container briefly under hot water. Once washed and sanitised, the container is ready for the next fill. For the smooth plastic surface, self-adhesive labels designed for curved surfaces are recommended. At the end of its useful life, the container should be placed in plastic recycling.

The container has confirmed suitability for cosmetics. Food-contact suitability is not declared for this container, so do not use it for edible products.

Frequently asked questions

Is the transparent plastic lip balm container suitable for home production?
Yes, the container is designed specifically for filling with your own solid lip balms. The molten mass of waxes, butters and oils is poured directly into the container and solidifies inside once cooled. The container is suitable for contact with cosmetic products. Before first use, simply clean, sanitise and allow it to dry completely.
How do I fill the lip balm container correctly to prevent the balm from cracking?
Pour the mass when it has cooled slightly but is still liquid, and allow it to set at room temperature away from draughts. Rapid cooling in a refrigerator causes cracks and a sunken centre. Fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim, to leave a margin for the closure and for the contraction of the mass as it sets.
Can the lip balm container also be filled with liquid gloss or lip oil?
No, this container is intended for solid and semi-solid anhydrous masses. Liquid glosses and lip oils will leak out and cannot be applied from it. For liquid products, use containers with an applicator or dropper, which are available separately in the Handymade range.
Does the transparent container protect the lip balm from light?
No, transparent plastic allows light through and the contents are exposed to it. For balms containing sensitive oils, we recommend adding an antioxidant such as vitamin E and storing the finished product away from direct sunlight. If light protection is critical for the formulation, a coloured or opaque container is more appropriate.
Can the lip balm container be used more than once?
Yes, after thorough cleaning the container is suitable for repeated filling. Balm residue can be removed easily by warming the container under hot water. Then wash the container, sanitise it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allow it to dry completely. Before the next fill, check that the plastic is neither cracked nor cloudy.
