Product description

A plastic 28/410 cap in black is a flip top closure with a hinged lid and a dispensing opening. The bottle can be opened and closed with one hand, and the lid stays attached to the cap so it won't get lost even in the shower. It fits bottles with a 28/410 neck and products dispensed by squeezing the bottle, such as shampoos, shower gels, and body lotions.

Black is a neutral colour that pairs with clear, coloured, and matte bottles alike. According to the technical documentation, the cap is suitable for contact with cosmetic products.

What the flip top cap is suitable for

A flip top dispenses the contents through an opening in the cap. The amount is determined by how hard you squeeze the bottle and the consistency of the product. It therefore works best with liquid to medium-viscosity textures in softer, squeezable bottles.

  • Rinse-off shower and sink products – shampoos, shower gels, liquid soaps, and conditioners, where one-handed opening with wet fingers is an advantage.
  • Body lotions and thinner emulsions – fluid enough to pass through the dispensing opening without strong squeezing.
  • Gels and thick tonics – viscosity slows the flow, making it easy to gauge the dose.
  • Massage and body oils – dispensed drop by drop or as a thin stream. With very thin oils, expect a faster flow rate.

Less suitable for water-consistency products that flow from the opening too quickly. It is also not appropriate for thick creams, butters, or scrubs with larger particles that can clog the opening.

Test dispensing with the finished formulation at room temperature and in the cold. Emulsions and gels thicken in a cold bathroom, so a product that flows well in summer may be harder to dispense in winter.

What the 28/410 designation means

The designation describes the neck the cap fits. The number 28 is the thread diameter in millimetres and 410 is the thread type, meaning its height and number of turns. The cap seals only on a bottle with the same neck designation. A 28/400 or 28/415 neck has a different thread, even though the diameter is the same.

Bottles with a 28/410 neck and ready-made bottle-and-closure combinations are available from Handymade. When creating your own combination, we recommend verifying the seal, dispensing performance, and packaging behaviour with the specific formulation.

What is good to know before use

Preparation before first filling. The cap is washed, disinfected, and left to dry completely. Water lingers longest in the dispensing opening and under the lid.

Filling the bottle. The bottle is filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. Nominal volume is the volume the packaging is designed for under normal filling conditions. Total volume is the physical volume up to the neck. The difference between them is a reserve for the closure and for expansion of the contents with temperature changes. An overfilled bottle will force product into the thread when closed or first squeezed.

Hot filling. A product filled hot is closed only after it has cooled down. Otherwise water condenses under the closed cap, runs back into the product, and puts stress on the preservation system.

Plastic can react to higher concentrations of essential oils, fragrance compositions, and solvents. With such formulations, leave the filled and closed bottle to stand for several weeks and check that the cap does not deform, does not become brittle, and that the lid still snaps firmly shut.

Repeated use. The cap can be reused if the lid hinge holds and the lid snaps shut. Any product residue in the dispensing opening must be thoroughly washed out before the next filling, as dried-out product is a common source of contamination.

Recycling. The cap is made of plastic and should be placed in sorted plastic waste at the end of its useful life.

Frequently asked questions

What bottles does the 28/410 cap fit?
The 28/410 cap fits bottles with a neck marked 28/410, meaning a thread with a 28 mm diameter and thread type 410. The bottle material does not matter; what matters is a matching thread. On a 28/400 or 28/415 neck, the cap will not seat correctly and will not seal. The neck type of the bottle is stated in its specifications.
Which products is the flip top cap suitable for?
The flip top cap is suitable for liquid to medium-viscosity products dispensed by squeezing the bottle: shampoos, shower gels, conditioners, liquid soaps, body lotions, and gels. With watery products the flow is too fast; with thick creams and butters it is insufficient. For watery products a spray pump is more practical; for thick creams and butters a jar.
Is the flip top cap suitable for products with essential oils or alcohol?
The suitability of a flip top cap for products containing essential oils or alcohol must be verified with the specific formulation. A higher proportion of essential oils, fragrance compositions, or solvents can degrade the plastic over time. It is recommended to store the filled and closed bottle for a few weeks as a test and check that the cap does not deform, does not become brittle, and that the lid still snaps firmly shut.
Does the flip top cap seal during transport?
The seal of a flip top cap depends on the combination with the specific bottle and the consistency of the contents, so it must be verified in advance. A simple test is sufficient: leave the filled and firmly closed bottle lying on its side or standing upside down for a day. Thin oils and alcoholic solutions will test the seal more than thick gels and emulsions.
How do you clean a flip top cap before filling?
Before filling, the flip top cap is washed with warm water and dish soap, rinsed, and disinfected with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. It is then left to dry completely with the lid open so that moisture can evaporate from the dispensing opening as well. Residual water in the cap can introduce microorganisms into the product.
