Product description

The plastic spray pump with a 18/415 thread is a closure that turns an ordinary narrow-necked bottle into a practical spray with a fine mist. It is suitable wherever a liquid is to be applied evenly and in small amounts – to facial toners, hydrosols, facial and hair mists, textile and air fresheners, hand sanitising solutions or cleaning liquids. The black head with a transparent dip tube looks discreet and goes well with both amber and clear bottles.

The spray pump is suitable for use with cosmetic products and has an issued declaration of conformity. It is of both cosmetic and technical quality, so it serves equally well in making cosmetics as in misting plants or dispensing cleaning solutions around the home or workshop.

How the spray pump works

When the head is pressed, the piston draws the contents up through the dip tube and forces them out through the nozzle, which breaks them into tiny droplets. One press releases the same dose every time, roughly 0.14 ml, so the product is easy to dose and nothing is wasted. The mist is fine and suitable for applying directly to the face or hair without soaking the skin.

Before first use, the spray pump needs to be primed – press the head several times without load until the dip tube fills and the first dose comes out as a mist. This is normal behaviour of any mechanical spray pump, not a fault.

Which contents it is suitable for

The spray pump works reliably with contents that have a viscosity close to water:

  • Aqueous solutions – toners, hydrosols, facial mists, floral waters, solutions of active ingredients in water.
  • Water-alcohol contents – air and textile fresheners, hand sanitiser, hair sprays with alcohol, perfumed waters with a lower proportion of fragrance substances.
  • Very light emulsions – thin "spray milk" type mists, if they are homogeneous and stable; it is advisable to check suitability in advance.
  • Technical liquids – cleaning solutions, water for misting plants, water-diluted preparations.

Thick emulsions, gels and products with solid particles (scrubs, undissolved powders) do not belong in the spray pump – the nozzle will not atomise them or will clog.

The spray pump is not intended for oils or thick contents. With an oil-based content, a stream of droplets forms instead of a mist and the mechanism quickly gums up. For oils, a dropper or a pump is more suitable.

Choosing the bottle and the dip tube length

The spray pump fits bottles with a 18/415 neck type – the number gives the neck diameter and the thread type, which must match exactly, otherwise the closure will not seal. Bottles with the same neck and ready-made bottle + spray pump combinations can be found in the Handymade range; for your own combination we recommend checking the seal and the behaviour of the packaging with the specific formulation.

The dip tube length is matched to the height of the bottle. The tube should end just above the bottom so that the spray pump draws out almost all of the contents while not kinking. With a taller bottle, the contents at the bottom would remain unused; with a shorter one, the tube can be trimmed.

If the dip tube is too long for your bottle, trim it with sharp scissors using a straight cut. First fit the spray pump, measure how much of the tube needs to be cut off, and cut in smaller pieces – a shortened tube cannot be lengthened again.

The bottle is filled to its nominal volume, not to the brim. The nominal volume is the volume the packaging is designed for under normal filling; the total volume up to the neck is larger and the difference provides a reserve for the dip tube and the spray pump head. If the bottle is filled to the brim, the contents overflow once the closure is fitted.

Good to know

  • Preparation before first filling – spray the pump through with clean water or ethanol and let it dry; this removes any residues from manufacturing and transport.
  • Material – both the head and the dip tube are made of polypropylene (PP), which handles water, alcohol and common cosmetic ingredients well. With contents high in essential oils or organic solvents, it is advisable to verify the material's behaviour in the finished formulation.
  • Preservation of the contents – the spray pump limits contact of the contents with air and hands, but aqueous products still need a preservative. The closure alone does not ensure microbial stability.
  • Reuse – after emptying, spray the pump through with warm water and then ethanol and let it dry. When switching the contents to a different type of product (for example from a perfumed water to a toner), it is better to use a new piece so that fragrances do not carry over.
  • Clogged nozzle – if the mist weakens, it is usually dried content in the nozzle. Spraying through with warm water or briefly soaking the head will help.
  • Recycling – polypropylene is among the commonly recyclable plastics; after use, rinse the spray pump and put it in the plastic waste.

Frequently asked questions

Is the plastic spray pump 18/415 suitable for an oil serum?
No, the spray pump is intended for liquids with a viscosity close to water. Oil will not pass through the fine nozzle as a mist, it only leaks out in drops and the mechanism gradually gums up. For oil serums and facial oils, a dropper or a pump with the same neck type is more suitable.
Which bottles does the spray pump with a 18/415 thread fit?
The spray pump fits only bottles with a 18/415 neck type – both the diameter and the thread pitch must match exactly, otherwise the closure will not seal. It is a widespread neck type on both glass and plastic bottles of smaller volumes. Before fitting, also check the dip tube length relative to the height of the bottle.
Can the spray pump's dip tube be trimmed for a shorter bottle?
Yes, the dip tube can be trimmed with sharp scissors using a straight cut. First hold the spray pump up to the bottle and measure how much needs to be cut off so that the tube ends just above the bottom. Cut gradually – a shortened tube can no longer be lengthened and a tube that is too short will not draw out all the contents.
Why doesn't the spray pump spray on the first press?
Before first use, the spray pump needs to be primed, that is, the head pressed several times until the dip tube fills with liquid. The first presses only draw up the contents and push air out of the mechanism. If no mist comes out even after repeated pressing, check whether the tube reaches below the liquid level and whether it is not kinked.
Does the plastic spray pump tolerate alcohol and essential oils?
Water-alcohol contents such as fresheners, hair sprays or hand sanitiser are handled well by the polypropylene spray pump. With contents high in essential oils or other organic solvents, it is recommended to verify the material's behaviour and the seal in the finished product, since it depends on the specific composition and concentration.
