Product description
The plastic flip top 20 mm is a cap with a hinged lid and a small dispensing opening, designed for bottles with a 20 mm neck. The contents are dispensed after flipping the lid with one hand, without unscrewing the closure. After use, the lid snaps back into place and seals the opening.
The closure is transparent, so it does not visually interfere with the bottle or label and suits clear, coloured and matte packaging alike. The small opening releases the contents in small doses, which is practical for products used in the shower, at the sink or on the go.
What the flip top is suitable for
The flip top is suitable for products that flow or can be squeezed from the bottle:
- Surfactant products – shampoos, shower gels, liquid soaps and cleansing gels, where opening the lid with a wet hand is sufficient.
- Light emulsions – body lotions and thinner conditioners that flow through the small opening.
- Aqueous products – tonics, facial waters and micellar waters dispensed onto a cotton pad.
- Oils – body, massage and cleansing oils dispensed in small amounts into the palm.
The flip top is less suitable for thick creams, masks, balms and products with coarser particles (scrubs). These pass through the small opening with difficulty or clog it.
Choosing a bottle and dispensing
The dispensing method depends on the bottle. From a soft plastic bottle, the contents are squeezed out by pressing, so it can handle more viscous gels and lotions as well. From a rigid or glass bottle, the contents are simply poured by tilting. This works well for thin liquids and oils, but not for thicker textures.
The closure fits bottles with the same neck type specified in the bottle parameters. Suitable bottles and ready-made bottle-and-closure combinations are available in the Handymade range.
When creating your own combination, fill one bottle before the full batch, tighten the closure and leave it lying on its side for a day. This will show whether the combination seals properly and whether the product flows through the opening as needed.
The bottle should be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. The nominal volume is the amount the bottle is designed for under normal filling conditions; total volume is the capacity to the rim. The difference between them provides headspace for the closure and for expansion of the contents with temperature changes. An overfilled bottle may leak under the flip top.
Good to know
Before first use, wash the closure in lukewarm water with washing-up liquid and rinse thoroughly. Then disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave to dry completely with the lid open. Residual moisture in the dispensing opening and under the lid can be a source of contamination for aqueous products.
The closure is plastic, so do not boil it. For formulations with a higher proportion of essential oils or alcohol, check in advance whether the closure deforms or becomes brittle.
For products that dry out on exposure to air (gels with a higher thickener content, surfactant concentrates), it is worth wiping the dispensing opening occasionally. Dried residue prevents the lid from snapping fully closed.
