Product description

A white plastic jar 50 ml is a wide-mouth container for thick and semi-solid products that are scooped with a finger or spatula. Suitable for face creams, body butters, balms, masks and scrubs.

The white walls conceal the contents and partially shield them from light. This is beneficial for formulations with vegetable oils and extracts whose colour changes over time. The plastic is lightweight and shatterproof, so the jar handles bathrooms, travel and postal shipping without the risk of breakage.

The packaging material is suitable for use with cosmetic products and meets the applicable regulatory requirements. The declaration is provided in the product parameters.

What the jar is suitable for

  • Creams and emulsions – thicker O/W and W/O creams that would be difficult to dispense from a pump bottle.
  • Anhydrous products – body and whipped butters and balms, which are filled while still liquid or pressed into the jar.
  • Masks and scrubs – clay masks, sugar and salt scrubs, where the wide mouth makes scooping easier.
  • Samples and smaller batches – trial batches during formulation development or smaller packaging of a finished product.

For thin liquid products such as tonics, serums and oils, a bottle with a dropper, pump or spray is more practical.

Nominal and total volume

Packaging is described with two volumes. The nominal volume is the amount the jar is intended to hold under normal filling. The total volume to the brim is the physical volume up to the rim of the neck. The difference between them is a reserve for the lid and for expansion of the contents with temperature changes. This allows the jar to be closed without forcing product into the thread.

Fill the jar to the nominal volume, not to the brim. With whipped butters and scrubs it is worth filling a test piece and weighing how many grams of the finished product actually fit inside.

What to know before filling

Before first use, wash the jar with warm water and detergent and rinse thoroughly. Then disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allow to dry completely. Residual water in the container unnecessarily burdens the preservative system of the product.

Plastic does not tolerate high temperatures the way glass does. Allow hot balms and butters to cool slightly before filling and test the jar's heat resistance on a single piece. Boiling and oven sterilisation are not suitable.

For products with a high proportion of essential oils, alcohol or other solvents, we recommend carrying out a compatibility test. Fill a jar and leave it for several weeks, checking whether the shape of the walls, the plastic surface or the scent of the contents changes. Standard creams, butters and balms with typical fragrance levels do not usually cause such issues.

Lids with the same thread diameter (stated in the parameters) and ready-made jar-and-lid combinations are available in the Handymade range. With your own combination, we recommend verifying the seal with the specific product.

The dimensions needed for label design are in the parameters. Apply the label to a dry and degreased surface. At the end of its service life, the jar is sorted as plastic packaging.

Frequently asked questions

What products is the 50 ml plastic jar suitable for?
The 50 ml plastic jar is suitable for thick and semi-solid products that are scooped with a finger or spatula. These include face creams, body butters, balms, masks and scrubs. The wide mouth makes filling and emptying the jar easier. For thin liquids such as tonics and serums, a bottle with a dispensing closure is more suitable.
How much product fits in a 50 ml plastic jar?
A plastic jar with a nominal volume of 50 ml holds 50 ml of product under normal filling. The physical volume to the brim is slightly larger and serves as a reserve for the lid and content expansion. The weight of the fill in grams depends on the product's density. A whipped butter will weigh less, a sugar scrub more, than the same volume of cream.
Does a white plastic jar protect the contents from light?
A white plastic jar provides partial protection from light. White walls shield the contents better than a clear container, but do not guarantee complete protection. For formulations with oils prone to oxidation, it is therefore still advisable to add an antioxidant and store the finished product away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
Can a hot balm or butter be filled into a plastic jar?
Filling a plastic jar directly from a hot water bath is not recommended. Melted balm or butter should be allowed to cool slightly and filled while still liquid. It is worth testing heat resistance on a single piece and checking whether the walls or base deform.
What lid fits the 50 ml plastic jar?
The 50 ml plastic jar takes a lid with the same thread diameter as stated in the jar's parameters. Matching lids and ready-made jar-and-lid combinations are available in the Handymade range. With your own combination, we recommend filling a test piece and checking whether the lid seals even when turned upside down.
