Product description

Glass jar, amber, black plastic lid, 50 ml is a ready-made set for creams, balms and butters: an amber glass jar with a wide neck, a black screw-on lid and a white inner liner that is placed directly on the contents. Amber glass reduces the amount of light getting in, so it is used mainly for products with vegetable and essential oils, extracts or vitamins, which lose their effect and fragrance faster in light. The 50 ml volume corresponds to the usual size of a face cream, eye cream, solid balm or hand ointment.

The whole set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products; the declaration of conformity is available with the product. It is not intended for food packaging.

What the set consists of

  • Amber glass jar – the wide neck makes it easier to fill thick products and to scoop out the finished cream. Glass does not absorb odours or colorants from the contents and can be refilled after washing.
  • Black plastic lid – screws onto the thread of the jar. Inside, it has a foam seal that presses against the neck and reduces drying out of the contents.
  • Inner liner – a thin disc made of polypropylene. After filling, it is placed on the surface of the cream, separates the contents from the lid and, during transport, catches material that would otherwise stick to the seal.

What it is suitable for

The jar is intended for products that are scooped out with a finger or spatula: face and eye creams, thicker emulsions, body butters, hot-poured balms, ointments made from oils and wax, solid scrubs with sugar or salt, cream deodorants and masks. It handles water-based and anhydrous formulations equally well; glass does not react with them.

With water-based creams, bear in mind that the wide neck invites scooping with fingers. The formulation therefore needs a reliable preservative system, and it is worth recommending a spatula to the customer. Liquid serums, oils or toners are dispensed poorly from a jar; a bottle with a dropper or pump is more suitable for them.

Nominal and total volume

Nominal volume is the amount the jar is intended for under normal filling. Total brimful volume is the physical volume up to the neck and can be found in the parameters. The difference between them forms a reserve for the inner liner and the lid seal, and also leaves room so that the contents do not push the liner out when the temperature changes.

Fill the product up to the nominal volume and leave the level below the neck. The liner then sits on the surface without pushing cream onto the thread, and the lid closes against clean glass.

Preparation and filling

Before the first filling, wash the jar and lid, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave them to dry completely. Moisture in the packaging shortens the shelf life of the finished cream.

Glass is sensitive to sudden temperature changes. Let hot-poured balms and butters cool slightly before filling, or warm the jars beforehand. Place the inner liner only after the surface has set. Screw on the lid after the product has cooled completely, otherwise steam condenses under it and water droplets form on the surface of the balm.

Do not pour a hot product into cold glass. The temperature difference can crack the jar, especially if it is standing on a cold surface.

Good to know

The lid is made of plastic. For contents with a high proportion of essential oils or solvents, we therefore recommend checking whether the seal and liner soften over time and whether the fragrance of the product changes. Leave the filled jar in a warm place for several weeks and check the tightness and the appearance of the liner.

The jar can be refilled repeatedly after washing. With each new filling, check the lid seal and the liner, and replace the liner if it is deformed or discoloured. Glass belongs in glass recycling; the lid and liner are recycled as plastic once separated.

Closures with the same neck type as stated in the parameters, and other ready-made combinations, can be found in the Handymade range. For your own combination, we recommend verifying the tightness and behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 50 ml amber glass jar protect the contents from light?
Yes, amber glass reduces the amount of light getting in and so slows the oxidation of oils, fragrances and sensitive active ingredients. It is not a complete barrier, however, so store finished products out of direct sunlight. For formulations with a high proportion of essential oils or vitamins, dark glass is a wiser choice than clear.
What is the inner liner in a glass jar for?
The liner separates the contents from the lid and limits air access to the surface of the cream. During transport it catches material that would otherwise stick to the seal, and the customer opens a clean lid. It is placed on the surface only after filling and, where relevant, after the product has set, not below the level of the surface.
How much cream fits into a 50 ml glass jar?
With normal filling, the jar holds 50 ml, which is its nominal volume. The physical brimful volume is slightly larger and can be found in the parameters; the difference forms a reserve for the liner and the lid seal. Do not fill to the brim, as the product would get onto the thread and the lid would not seal.
Can a glass jar with a plastic lid be reused?
Yes, after washing and disinfection with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol the jar can be filled again. Before each filling, leave the glass to dry completely and check the seal in the lid and the inner liner. If the liner is deformed, discoloured or has absorbed fragrance, replace it with a new one.
Is the 50 ml glass jar suitable for both water-based creams and anhydrous balms?
Yes, glass withstands water-based emulsions as well as anhydrous balms and butters. With water-based creams, bear in mind that the wide neck encourages scooping with fingers, so they need a well-balanced preservative system. Alcohol-based toners and liquid serums are difficult to dispense from a jar; a bottle with a dropper or sprayer is more suitable for them.
