Product description

Glass bottle, vial, 28 mm, black ribbed pump dispenser, 100 ml

A brown glass vial with a black pump is a complete packaging set with closure for cosmetics dispensed repeatedly and in small amounts. The dark glass protects the contents from light, and the pump delivers the product without opening the bottle and without finger contact with the contents. The set with a nominal volume of 100 ml is suitable especially for face and body lotions, light creams, liquid soaps, oil serums and hair products of liquid to medium-thick consistency.

Vial refers to the shape of the bottle with straight walls and a short neck, not its intended use for medication. The bottle stands stably on a shelf or beside a sink and is easy to hold in one hand, which you will appreciate when dispensing with one hand.

Key benefits

  • Light protection – brown glass reduces light exposure to the contents and helps protect formulations with vegetable oils, vitamins, extracts or fragrance components that degrade more quickly in light.
  • Hygienic dispensing – the pump delivers approximately the same dose with each press, the bottle does not open, and fingers or bathroom water do not come into contact with the contents. The product thus remains free of contamination for longer.
  • Glass without interaction with contents – glass does not react with essential oils, alcohol or most cosmetic raw materials, does not absorb odours and does not become discoloured. It is therefore also suitable for preparations with a higher proportion of fragrance components.
  • Ribbed closure – the textured surface of the pump makes it easier to tighten firmly onto the thread even with wet hands, which helps maintain a seal during everyday use.
  • Reusable – you can wash the glass bottle and refill it; the pump simply needs to be rinsed with clean water and left to dry.

How the set works

The pump screws onto the neck thread. The suction tube reaches to the bottom of the bottle and when the head is pressed, it pushes the contents up towards the outlet. At first, press the pump several times without load until the tube fills and the first dose comes out. One dose is approximately 1.8 ml, which suits products applied to a larger area, such as body lotion or liquid soap. For concentrated serums where only a few drops are needed, a smaller bottle with a dropper is more suitable.

The pump tube is supplied longer than the height of the bottle. Before first use, cut it so that the end touches the bottom without bending. A bent tube draws in air, causing the pump to dispense irregularly.

Dispensing depends on the density of the contents. Liquid and medium-thick preparations pass through the pump smoothly; thick creams, butters or high-viscosity gels may clog it or require stronger pressing. We recommend checking the pump's behaviour with the specific formulation before filling a larger quantity.

Nominal and total volume

The nominal volume is the volume the bottle is intended for during normal filling, and it is this volume that appears on the label. The total volume to the brim is the physical capacity up to the neck. The difference between them provides a reserve for the pump with its tube, which takes up some space once screwed on, and for the expansion of the contents when temperature changes. The bottle should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. Filling to the brim would cause the contents to overflow through the thread when the pump is fitted.

Contact with cosmetics and food

The set as a whole is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products; the declaration of conformity for both the bottle and the pump can be found with the product. The glass bottle also has a separate certificate for direct food contact; the plastic pump does not. The set is therefore intended for cosmetics.

The set with a pump is not approved for contact with food. For home oils, syrups or infusions, use the glass bottle alone, which has a separate food-grade certificate.

What is good to know

  • Preparation before first filling – wash the bottle with warm water, optionally disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave to dry completely. Residual water in glass may cause cloudiness in anhydrous oil preparations and compromise preservation in emulsions. Rinse the pump with clean water and leave to dry upside down.
  • Hot filling – glass can withstand warm contents, but a sudden temperature difference is not good for it. Allow a hot emulsion to cool slightly before filling and fill into a room-temperature bottle. Attach the pump only after the contents have cooled, to prevent a vacuum forming in the sealed bottle.
  • Plastic pump and fragrance components – the pump body is made of polypropylene, which is resistant to common cosmetic raw materials. For preparations with a high proportion of essential oils or solvents, we recommend testing whether the pump still seals and dispenses consistently after several weeks.
  • Labelling – the straight wall of the vial is suitable for a wrap-around label. Brown glass alters the perception of colours on a transparent label, so when designing, account for a dark background.
  • Other closures – other closures from the Handymade range also fit the PP28S threaded neck; ready-made bottle and closure combinations have their own description. For a custom combination, we recommend verifying the seal and dispensing with the specific formulation.
  • Recycling – after emptying, unscrew the pump; glass goes with glass and the plastic closure goes with plastics.

Suitable for products such as

  • Body and face lotions – light O/W emulsions pass through the pump smoothly and the dose corresponds to the amount for one application.
  • Liquid soaps and cleansing gels – hygienic dispensing at the sink without opening the packaging; the glass bottle also serves as a permanent container for repeated refilling.
  • Oil serums and face oils – glass protects the oils from light and the pump limits air access to the contents. For more expensive oils with small dosing, consider a smaller packaging size.
  • Leave-in hair products – liquid conditioners, hair oils and end serums are dispensed directly into the palm with the pump.
  • Massage oils and blends – dark glass slows down the ageing of oils in light and the pump dispenses oil even with one hand.

Frequently asked questions

Does the brown glass vial with pump protect the contents from light?
Yes, brown glass reduces light exposure to the contents and helps slow down the degradation of light-sensitive components. It is therefore suitable for vegetable oils, serums with vitamins and preparations with essential oils. The protection is not complete; the bottle should nonetheless be stored away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
What products can be dispensed with the pump on the 100 ml glass vial?
The pump is suitable for liquid to medium-thick preparations, such as lotions, light creams, liquid soaps, oils and hair serums. The pump cannot reliably draw up thick creams, butters or firm gels and may become clogged. For borderline viscosities, we recommend filling one bottle as a trial and monitoring dispensing for several days.
Is the glass vial and pump set suitable for food?
No, the set with a pump is not approved for contact with food. The glass bottle alone has a certificate for direct food contact; the plastic pump does not. The set as a whole is intended for cosmetics. For home oils or syrups, use the bottle alone without the pump.
Why is the 100 ml glass vial not filled to the brim?
The glass vial is filled to the nominal volume because the total volume to the brim is greater and the difference provides a reserve for the pump and for the expansion of the contents. The tube and the lower part of the pump, once screwed on, displace some of the contents upwards. Filling to the brim would cause the contents to overflow through the thread and could compromise the seal of the closure.
Can the glass vial with pump be refilled and reused?
Yes, both the glass and the pump are suitable for repeated use. Wash the bottle with warm water, disinfect with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol and leave to dry. Rinse the pump with clean water, press it several times without load to flush out product residue, and leave to dry. When changing the type of product, for example from an oil to an emulsion, thorough cleaning of the pump is essential.
Why does the pump on the vial not dispense or dispenses irregularly?
The most common cause is a tube that is empty or bent. A new pump needs several presses without load until the tube fills with contents. If the tube is too long and bends at the bottom, it draws in air and must be trimmed to the height of the bottle. Irregular dispensing can also be caused by contents that are too thick, or a partially blocked outlet that can simply be rinsed with warm water.
