Product description
A blue glass medicine bottle with a volume of 5 ml and a dropper with a silver glossy cap is used for dispensing by the drop. Blue glass reduces the amount of light reaching the contents, so the set suits products that quickly lose quality in light: essential oils, fragrance compositions, oil serums with vitamins or concentrated active ingredients. Five millilitres is a volume for samples, testers, travel sizes and for ingredients that are added to a recipe by the drop.
The bottle and the dropper are each separately declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products, so the set is intended for cosmetics. Neither component has a food contact certificate, and the set is not used for food applications.
What the set consists of
- Bottle – a blue glass medicine bottle with a nominal volume of 5 ml and a narrow neck.
- Dropper – a glass tube 44 mm long, a silicone bulb and a silver glossy cap with an aluminium shell. The length of the tube is matched to this bottle.
In the finished packaging, the liquid touches the glass of the bottle and the glass tube of the dropper. Under normal storage, it should not come into contact with the bulb or the cap.
What it is suitable for
- Essential oils and fragrance compositions – the small volume and dispensing by the drop match how these ingredients are actually used in recipes.
- Oil serums and facial oils – samples for customers or a travel size from which the product is dispensed straight onto the palm.
- Concentrated active ingredients – oil solutions of vitamins or fragrance concentrates, where quantities are counted in drops.
- Tinctures and alcohol solutions – glass does not react with alcohol, and the dropper allows precise measuring.
The dropper is not suitable for thick gels, balms or creams, as the contents cannot be drawn up into the tube.
Nominal and brimful volume
The nominal volume is the volume the packaging is designed for under normal filling. The brimful volume is the physical volume of the bottle up to the neck. The difference between them leaves room for the glass tube of the dropper, which pushes part of the liquid upwards when screwed in, and for the expansion of the contents with temperature changes. With such a small bottle, it is worth keeping to this margin strictly, otherwise the contents will get into the thread or overflow when closing.
Filling and using the dropper
Before the first filling, wash the bottle and the dropper, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let them dry completely. Traces of water in oil-based contents reduce their stability and spoil their appearance.
Fill the medicine bottle through its narrow neck using a funnel with a narrow tip or a dosing syringe. After filling, screw in the dropper so that the cap sits on the neck, without using force. To dispense, squeeze the bulb, immerse the tube in the contents, release, and then squeeze out the liquid drop by drop.
Store the bottle upright. When it is laid on its side or upside down, the liquid gets into the silicone bulb, where it stays in contact with the silicone for longer and is harder to remove.
Glass does not tolerate sudden temperature changes. Let a hot oil phase or a freshly cooked tincture cool down before filling, and do not alternate hot and cold water when washing either.
Good to know
The set can be used repeatedly. Wash and disinfect the bottle before each refilling. For the dropper, rinse the tube and the bulb and check that the bulb is still elastic and seals well. After essential oils, the scent remains in the silicone, so for filling with a different fragrance it is better to use a new dropper.
With thicker oils, such as castor oil, the contents are drawn up more slowly and the drops are larger, which needs to be taken into account when measuring out a recipe. Leak-tightness during transport depends on how firmly the cap is tightened and on the contents. Before sending samples, we recommend turning a trial pack upside down and leaving it for a few hours.
Closures with the same type of neck and other ready-made bottle + closure combinations can be found in the Handymade range. If you combine components yourself, we recommend checking the tightness and behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation.
After washing, the bottle goes into glass recycling. The dropper combines glass, silicone, aluminium and plastic, so before disposal its parts are taken apart and sorted by material.
