Question 1

How do I choose the right emollient for my formulation?

Accepted Answer

Choose according to the “skin feel” you want, the viscosity and the type of product. Light esters (Isoamyl Laurate, Hemisqualane) absorb quickly and reduce the greasy feel, plant-based silicone alternatives (LexFeel N350, LexFeel Natural) improve slip and shine, and glycerol esters (Glyceryl Oleate, Glyceryl Caprylate/Caprate) support texture and skin comfort after washing.

Question 2

How much emollient should I add to an emulsion or balm?

Accepted Answer

Typically 1–10%, depending on the aim: 1–3% to improve slip, 3–6% for softness and less tackiness, 6–10% for a richer feel. Always follow the recommendations for the specific raw material and check the stability of the formulation – a higher share of emollients changes the viscosity and the whole sensory profile of the finished product.

Question 3

Can several emollients be combined?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Pairing a light “dry touch” emollient with a richer lipid softener gives balanced slip and comfort – Isoamyl Laurate with Glyceryl Oleate, for example. In hair care, plant-based silicone alternatives of the LexFeel type work well too, adding shine and making combing easier without weighing the hair down.

Question 4

Are these emollients suitable for shampoos and shower gels?

Accepted Answer

Yes, several of them reduce the degreasing effect of surfactants and leave the skin and hair softer after washing – lipid softeners such as Glyceryl Oleate are typical here. When dosing, allow for compatibility with the surfactants you use and for the viscosity of the finished product, so that it stays stable and pleasant to use.
