Product description

Lavandin super essential oil is added to cosmetics mainly as a fragrance component. It gives the finished product a lavender scent with herbal and camphoraceous undertones, which is clearly noticeable in soap, shower gel or body oil. It is obtained by steam distillation of lavandin (Lavandula hybrida), a cross between lavender species of European origin. The manufacturer also classes it among active ingredients and associates it with a soothing and cooling effect on the skin, which is used in after-sun products and in care for skin prone to irritation.

The oil is available in cosmetic and food grade, is vegan and dissolves in oil and in alcohol, but not in water. Its solubility and volatility determine how it is handled in a formulation.

Fragrance profile

The manufacturer describes the scent as lavender with a camphoraceous note, floral, herbal and rustic. The core is lavender, and the herbal, rougher “field” note gives it a more direct character. It suits products where lavender should be clearly recognisable: soaps, bath products, massage oils, air fresheners and diffusers.

Key benefits

  • Lavender scent with a camphoraceous note – a floral-herbal character for products in which lavender should dominate: soaps, bath products, massage oils, diffusers.
  • Soothing effect on the skin – according to the manufacturer’s data, it helps to reduce redness and the feeling of irritation. The manufacturer therefore lists it for after-sun products and for care of skin prone to irritation.
  • Cooling sensation – the manufacturer describes a refreshing, cooling feel on the skin, usable for example in after-sun gels and milks.
  • Relaxing scent – in aromatherapy, hair mists and leave-in hair care, the manufacturer associates the scent with relaxation and relief of tension. This effect is linked to the scent.
  • Wide range of use – the product parameters cover face, body, hair, nails, the eye area and intimate hygiene. The permitted usage rate in each product category is set by the IFRA standard.

Use in formulation

The oil is incorporated into the oil phase or, in emulsions, only in the cooling phase and as a post-addition. It is added to a finished cream or milk after cooling, when the emulsion is already formed and stable, and mixed in thoroughly. In anhydrous products (body and massage oils, butters, cuticle oils) it is added at room temperature to the finished oil blend.

The recommended processing temperature is below 40 °C. When it is added to a hot oil phase, part of the volatile components evaporates and the scent in the finished product weakens. For this reason, add the fragrance component as one of the last ingredients.

In water-based systems (facial toners, hair mists, body sprays) the oil does not disperse on its own. It needs a solubiliser, for example Polysorbate 20 or PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, with which it is first mixed before the blend is added to the water phase. In hydroalcoholic products (eaux de parfum, aftershaves) it dissolves directly in the alcohol.

For cold process soap we have not practically verified how the oil behaves in the soap batter, so try it first on a small batch.

The manufacturer does not state an exact recommended usage rate. The upper limits are set by the IFRA standard separately for each product category (for example category 4 for fine fragrances, 5A for body creams and oils, 5B for facial toners and creams, 9 for soaps and shampoos, 12 for candles and air fresheners). When calculating the recipe, work from the current IFRA documentation for this oil.

Suitable for products such as

  • Soaps, shower gels and bath products – lavender scent for rinse-off products, usage rate according to the IFRA limits for category 9.
  • Body and massage oils – it dissolves directly in the carrier oil at room temperature.
  • After-sun products – they make use of the cooling and soothing effect described by the manufacturer.
  • Facial creams and toners – in creams in the cooling phase, in toners via a solubiliser.
  • Hair mists and leave-in hair care – the manufacturer lists it for hair perfumes and mists.
  • Nail and cuticle oils – as the fragrance component of an anhydrous product.
  • Intimate hygiene washes – within the IFRA limits for this category.
  • Diffusers and aromatherapy blends – on its own or as part of a fragrance composition.

Good to know

The oil is clear to pale yellow. For light-coloured and clear products, it is worth checking the appearance on a test batch.

Volatility means that the oil should be added at the end of production, not heated, and the container should be kept closed during work. If a product is filled hot, the scent in the finished product will differ from the freshly mixed recipe.

The substance is classified under the CLP Regulation and contains hazardous substances. Details of the classification and safe handling are in the safety data sheet. Work with the concentrate in diluted form according to the IFRA limits, not undiluted on the skin.

Frequently asked questions

Is lavandin super essential oil soluble in water?
No, lavandin super does not dissolve in water. It dissolves in oil and in alcohol. In water-based products such as toners or hair mists, it is therefore added via a solubiliser with which it is first mixed, or it is dissolved in the alcohol component. Without this, the oil separates on the surface and the scent is distributed unevenly.
What is lavandin super essential oil and how is it made?
Lavandin super is an essential oil from lavandin (Lavandula hybrida), a cross between lavender species, obtained by steam distillation. Our oil comes from France and is available in cosmetic and food grade. The scent is lavender with a camphoraceous note, floral and herbal. In cosmetics it serves as a fragrance component and, according to the manufacturer, also as an active ingredient with a soothing and cooling effect on the skin.
When is lavandin super added to a cream?
Lavandin super is added to a cream only in the cooling phase, when the emulsion is below 40 °C. The oil is volatile and at a higher temperature part of the fragrance components evaporates. After it is added, the cream is mixed thoroughly so that the fragrance component is evenly dispersed in the oil phase of the emulsion.
How much lavandin super essential oil is added to cosmetics?
The manufacturer does not state an exact usage rate; the upper limits are set by the IFRA standard according to the product category. Fine fragrances, body creams, facial toners and soaps each have a different limit. When creating a recipe, work from the current IFRA documentation for the oil and adjust the fragrance component to the type of product and the area of application.
Is lavandin super suitable for sensitive skin?
The product parameters state suitability for sensitive skin and all skin types. The manufacturer associates the oil with a soothing effect and reduced redness. At the same time, the substance is classified under CLP, so it is used only diluted, within the IFRA limits for the given product category. For products for sensitive skin, keep the usage rate lower and test the finished product.
Can lavandin super essential oil be used in soap?
Yes, soaps are among the stated areas of use for lavandin super. The usage rate in soap follows the IFRA limits for category 9. We have not practically verified how the oil behaves in cold process soap batter for this product, so we recommend trying a small batch first and watching the trace speed and the colour of the batter.
