We bring you instructions for a simple gel body scrub that you can customize according to your ideas using mica powders and fragrance or essential oils. Its production is not complicated, so it is a suitable product even for beginners!
The gel body scrub is a water-based product that contains a thickener – guar gum, which also helps disperse a small amount of fragrance oil in the product. Jojoba beads were chosen as the exfoliating particles, as they do not dissolve in water; therefore, sugar or salt as exfoliating material is not suitable for this recipe.
When making the gel body scrub, you may encounter, for example, problems with pH adjustment. Therefore, we bring you a few tips on how to handle this part of the body scrub preparation as easily as possible. It is necessary to adjust the pH of the product not only for the correct efficacy of the preservative, but the final scrub will also be better tolerated by the skin, since a pH in the range of 4.5 to 5.5 is the physiological pH of the skin. When adjusting the pH, proceed slowly and add lactic acid drop by drop. Always mix the mixture thoroughly and check the pH before the next addition. The stated amount of lactic acid is only indicative, and your actual usage depends on many factors, such as the quality of the ingredients, weighing accuracy, substitutions in the formula and others.Do not use sugar and salt as exfoliating particles, because these substances will dissolve in the water present in the product. At the same time, the scrub is a rinse-off product, so after massaging it into the skin, rinse off any residue with clean water.
In the following lines, we bring you the function of each ingredient in the formula. You will also learn more about possible substitutions and options for tailoring the product exactly to your needs.
The base of most types of cosmetics is demineralized water. Do not use tap water or filtered water, as these will still contain minerals that can compromise the stability of the product. An alternative may be distilled water or floral hydrosols, which can replace the entire water portion of the formula.
Aloe vera juice is an excellent ingredient for the care of irritated skin. It is already a diluted and preserved aloe vera juice, similar in its properties to hydrosols. For this reason, this ingredient can be replaced by a hydrosol or demineralized water, but each such substitution will result in a change in the amount of lactic acid needed to adjust the pH.
To color the final product, a blend of pigments from mica powders to two-tone pigments was used. The choice of pigment is entirely up to you; feel free to reach for cosmetic glitters as well. However, jojoba beads are brown, so they will be more visible when using lighter pigments.
The water-soluble alcohol used to moisturize the skin is glycerin. Glycerin also helps to speed up the hydration of guar gum, so smaller lumps of this gum form and you will obtain a uniform, lump-free gel faster. Glycerin can therefore also be omitted from the product, but then it will take longer for the guar gum to fully hydrate.
To create a gel-like consistency in the product, the use of a thickener is necessary, in this case guar gum. By changing the content of guar gum, you can create thicker or thinner gels. An alternative to this gum is xanthan gum, which thickens somewhat more strongly, so usually adding only 1 % is sufficient.
The exfoliating component of the product is strawberry seeds. They have a strawberry scent, which perfumes the product. An alternative to them is any other water-insoluble exfoliating particles, such as ground strawberry seeds or finely ground pumice powder. You can also play with the content of exfoliating particles in the gel scrub and adjust it according to your needs.
For all lovers of fragrant cosmetics, we added a beautifully woody-scented Moroccan Amber fragrance oil to the product. However, you should choose your fragrance oil that suits you best. An alternative to fragrance oils is essential oils; always follow the recommended dosage, for example according to IFRA standards, to avoid an allergic reaction. Or prepare an unperfumed product by omitting the fragrance oil and topping up with water.
Lactic acid was chosen to adjust the pH, as it is sold in the form of an aqueous solution and can therefore be added directly to the product. An alternative is citric acid, which must first be dissolved in a 1:1 ratio in demineralized water, and the resulting solution is used to adjust the pH. pH adjustment must always be carried out to ensure the preservative functions properly and the product is well tolerated by the skin. Information on how to do this can be found in the Tips and tricks section.
The preservative in the gel body scrub is Euxyl K903. This preservative is active at an acidic pH, so it must be adjusted, for example with lactic acid. Do not omit the preservative from the product, because due to the water content, the scrub would spoil very quickly. Euxyl K903 can be replaced with another broad-spectrum preservative. However, always check in which pH range the preservative is active and adjust the product’s pH accordingly.
As mentioned, you can experiment with homemade formulas to achieve the desired properties. However, the final result can be influenced by many factors, such as humidity, temperature, quality of ingredients or their storage. Before using any ingredient to make a cosmetic product, familiarize yourself with its properties, recommended dosage, storage conditions and safe handling. Every ingredient can have the potential to trigger an allergic reaction in sensitive individuals, so before using the product we recommend determining whether you are allergic to any of the ingredients or to the finished product, for example by a patch test. If you have very sensitive or very acne-prone skin, or if you have other skin or health problems, we recommend consulting a medical professional before applying a new product to the skin, whether it is a homemade cosmetic product, a pure ingredient or a commercially available product.
