Product description

Glass bottle, black glossy dropper bottle, 100 ml — shields the contents from light. It is an opaque glass container for cosmetics and foods that are sensitive to light. Black glass is practically impermeable to light, making it ideal for face and body oils, serums, tinctures, drops, tonics and extracts with ingredients susceptible to photo-oxidation.

The neck has an 18/410 thread, so the bottle can be closed with a cap, dropper, pump or spray with the same neck type. The container is approved for direct contact with food, making it suitable for homemade herbal oils, syrups, infusions and concentrates.

Why choose black glass

  • Light protection – amber or blue glass only reduces light transmission; black glass is fully opaque. Oils rich in unsaturated fatty acids, vitamin serums, retinoids and plant extracts therefore degrade more slowly.
  • Chemical stability of glass – glass does not react with essential oils, alcohol or solvents, leaches nothing into the contents and does not absorb odours. Suitable for aqueous, alcoholic and oil-based fills.
  • Consistent product appearance – the colour of the contents is not visible, so a product range with differently coloured fills looks uniform on the shelf. The glossy surface holds labels and direct printing well.
  • Reusability – glass can be thoroughly washed, disinfected and refilled without any loss of performance.

Nominal and total volume

The bottle is designed to be filled with 100 ml, which is its nominal volume. The total volume to the rim is slightly larger and represents the physical capacity up to the neck. The difference between the two values is the headspace taken up by a dropper or pump inserted into the neck and needed for the contents to expand with temperature changes. The bottle should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. Filling to the brim risks overflow when fitting the closure and creates pressure on the seal.

When filling with a dropper or pump, test the actual fill level on a single unit before production. The tube displaces some volume, and with denser oils the level rises noticeably after insertion.

Closures and combinations

Closures with an 18/410 neck and ready-made combinations of the bottle with a dropper, pump or spray are available in the Handymade range. With a custom combination, we recommend verifying the seal integrity, dosing behaviour and compatibility of the container with the specific formulation. This applies in particular to alcoholic and very thin fills, which leak more easily when the bottle is inverted.

What to know when working with this container

  • Preparation before first filling – wash the bottle, rinse with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave to dry completely neck-down. Residual water in an oil-based or anhydrous product promotes microbial growth.
  • Filling temperature – glass tolerates hot filling, but a sudden thermal shock between a cold bottle and a hot fill can cause cracking. Allow bottles to warm to room temperature before hot filling, or temper them gradually.
  • Content inspection – the fill level and any changes such as cloudiness, phase separation or sediment are not visible through black glass. When working with your own formulations, keep a control sample in a clear bottle of the same volume.
  • Labelling – the glossy flat body holds self-adhesive labels well. Light, metallic or transparent labels with light printing are the most legible on a dark background.
  • Recycling – the container is made from a single material; once the closure is removed it goes into glass recycling.

Black glass protects against light, not against heat or air. Oxidation-sensitive ingredients still require an antioxidant in the formulation and a tight closure. Store the finished product away from heat sources.

Frequently asked questions

Does a black glass bottle protect the contents from light better than amber glass?
Yes, black glass is fully opaque, whereas amber glass only significantly reduces light transmission. For common oils and tinctures amber glass is sufficient. For highly sensitive ingredients such as retinol, vitamin C in oil form, bakuchiol or oils with a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids, black glass is the more reliable choice.
Is the 100 ml glass dropper bottle suitable for essential oils and alcoholic tinctures?
Yes, glass is chemically resistant to essential oils, alcohol and solvents and does not absorb fragrance. With these fills, however, the quality of the closure is equally critical. We recommend a closure with a solvent-resistant liner and verifying seal integrity before batch filling, as thin alcoholic fills penetrate the thread more easily when inverted.
How much does a 100 ml glass bottle actually hold?
The bottle is designed to be filled with 100 ml, which is its nominal volume. The physical capacity to the neck is slightly larger, but this headspace is taken up by a dropper or pump and by thermal expansion of the contents. Fill to the nominal volume. The exact total volume to the rim is listed in the product specifications.
Can a black glass bottle be used for food?
Yes, the container is approved for direct contact with food under normal conditions of use. It is therefore also suitable for homemade herbal oils, syrups, vinegars and herbal infusions. Before filling, wash, disinfect and dry the container in the same way as for cosmetics. The suitability of the closure for food use should be verified separately.
How do I wash and reuse a black glass bottle?
Wash the bottle with warm soapy water, rinse with clean water, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave to dry completely neck-down. Soak briefly in hot water with soda crystals to remove oil residue. Glass tolerates repeated cleaning without loss of performance. Check the closure after several cycles, however — the seal and dropper wear out faster than the bottle itself.
