Product description
The glossy black glass bottle – dropper bottle 50 ml is designed for contents that are sensitive to light: facial serums, facial and body oils, tinctures, herbal macerates and perfume oils. Black glass transmits only minimal light, so sensitive ingredients retain their properties for longer. The dropper bottle shape with straight walls and a slim neck is stable, comfortable to hold, and easy to work with during filling and dispensing. The neck has an 18/410 thread.
The bottle is suitable for cosmetics and also carries certification for direct food contact, so it can be used for homemade herbal oils, syrups, tinctures or infusions.
Why choose black glass
- Light protection – black glass blocks visible and UV light more effectively than amber or blue glass. Oils rich in unsaturated fatty acids, vitamin C, retinoids, essential oils and natural pigments therefore remain stable for longer.
- Does not react with contents – glass is chemically inert, does not absorb fragrances or colorants, and releases no substances into the product. It is therefore suitable for alcohol-based tinctures, concentrated perfume compositions and oils that would degrade plastic over time.
- Opaque glossy surface – matte labels and gold or white print stand out on black glass. The contents are not visible through the wall, so monitor the fill level by weight or number of doses.
- Standard 18/410 thread – one of the most widely used neck types. The range of closures is broad and replacement caps are easy to source later.
What is most commonly filled into the dropper bottle
The 50 ml capacity matches a standard size for facial serums, face oils, beard or cuticle oils, hair oils or trial sizes of massage oil. Thanks to the light protection, it is also a good choice for homemade tinctures, herbal glycerins, perfume oils based on jojoba oil, and concentrates dispensed drop by drop.
For water-based products (tonics, hydrolats, facial mists) the bottle works equally well – simply pair it with a spray or pump with an 18/410 thread. For thick creams and body butters, the dropper bottle shape is less practical. These are better suited to a jar with a wide neck.
Nominal and total volume – what is the difference
Nominal volume is the volume the container is designed for at standard fill level and what you state on the label. Total brim-full volume is the physical volume up to the neck and is slightly larger. The difference provides headspace for the submerged part of a dropper insert, the dip tube of a pump or spray, and for slight expansion of the contents with temperature changes. Always fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim. Otherwise the contents will be forced out when the closure is inserted and the thread will become contaminated. Both values are listed in the product specifications.
Pour oils and serums through a funnel or from a beaker with a spout, leaving headspace from the neck. A clean, dry neck and thread are essential for a good seal, especially with a dropper insert or spray.
Choosing a closure
Any closure with the same 18/410 neck type fits this bottle. Individual closures as well as ready-made bottle-and-closure combinations are available in the Handymade range. With a custom combination, we recommend verifying the seal and dispensing behaviour with your specific formulation: thick oils dispense more slowly through a dropper, while water-based solutions require a spray or pump that does not leak when tilted.
What to know before first filling
- Container preparation – before first use, wash the bottle with warm water and a mild detergent, rinse, and sanitise with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. Leave to dry completely neck-down. Residual water in an oil-based product promotes microbial growth.
- Glass and heat – glass withstands hot filling but not sudden thermal shock. Pour warm contents into a room-temperature container and do not place a cold bottle directly into hot water.
- Reuse – glass can be washed and sanitised repeatedly without any loss of properties. When changing the contents, first remove oil residues with warm soapy water; otherwise the scent of the previous product will linger on the walls.
- Labelling – the straight cylindrical wall makes it easy to apply a label without wrinkles. Derive your label dimensions from the diameter and height in the product specifications. On glossy black glass, labels on a transparent or dark background show up particularly well.
- Opacity – black glass makes it impossible to see the fill level or any cloudiness or sediment. For products where visual inspection of the contents matters, opt for amber or clear glass instead.
- Recycling – once empty, remove the closure and dispose of the bottle in the glass waste stream.
Glass is fragile and the bottle will break if dropped on a hard floor. For shipping and travel, use protective packaging or choose a plastic bottle for those purposes.
