Product description

Black glass vial 10 ml protects small volumes of serums, facial oils, essential oil blends, fragrance oils and tinctures from light. Opaque glass blocks light entirely, making it ideal for contents that are sensitive to light and dispensed drop by drop. The small volume is practical for samples, travel sizes and preparations that are used up quickly.

The packaging is suitable for contact with cosmetic products and is also approved for direct contact with food. It is therefore equally suited for small quantities of home-made herbal oils, aromatic infusions or food flavourings.

Why choose black glass

  • Light protection for the contents – unlike clear glass, it blocks light transmission, which slows the oxidation of oils and the fading of essential oils or coloured extracts. For sensitive active ingredients this is a practical advantage, not merely an aesthetic one.
  • Chemical resistance of glass – glass does not react with essential oils, alcohol or solvents that would gradually soften or cloud plastic. Neither scent nor colour from the contents will leach into the walls.
  • Glossy surface – smooth black glass looks cohesive even without a label and works well with a small label featuring contrasting text.
  • Reusable – once emptied, the vial can be washed, disinfected and refilled, which is appreciated when testing formulations and preparing samples for customers.

Nominal and total volume

For every container we state two volume values. The nominal volume is the volume the vial is intended to be filled to during normal use, and it is also the quantity stated on the label. The total brim-full volume is the physical internal volume up to the neck. The difference between the two provides headspace for the dropper or closure seal and for expansion of the contents with temperature changes. Fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim. Both values are listed in the packaging specifications.

Because black glass is opaque, you cannot see the fill level. When filling by hand, it helps to measure the dose beforehand using a measuring cup or syringe, or to fill by weight on a scale.

Choosing a closure

The vial has a neck with a 18/410 thread. Closures with the same neck type and ready-made bottle + closure combinations are available in the Handymade range. With any custom combination we recommend verifying leak-tightness and comfortable dispensing with the specific formulation. Thin oils and alcohol-based solutions behave differently in a dropper than thick serums.

Good to know

Preparation before first use. We recommend washing new vials, rinsing them with alcohol or isopropyl alcohol and allowing them to dry completely with the neck facing down. Residual water in an oil-based or anhydrous product would create conditions for microbial growth.

Glass and heat. A sudden change in temperature can crack glass. Allow hot phases to cool to at least lukewarm before filling, and do not pour hot contents into a vial that has been chilled in the refrigerator.

Labelling. The small diameter of the vial means the label must be narrow and flexible so it does not peel at the curve. Dimensions suitable for labelling are listed in the packaging specifications. Light-coloured text or a transparent film with white print stands out well against the black gloss.

Suitable contents. Thanks to the chemical resistance of glass, the vial is suitable for oil-based, alcohol-based and water-based preparations. For water-based products, do not forget to include a preservative, and when reusing the vial, clean it thoroughly, as residue is difficult to remove from a narrow neck.

Glass is fragile and will break if dropped on a hard surface. When sending samples, place the vial in bubble wrap or paper padding and tighten the closure firmly.

Recycling. The vial belongs in glass collection. Before disposal, unscrew the closure and rinse the glass.

Frequently asked questions

Does a black glass vial protect the contents from light?
Yes, black glass is opaque and does not transmit light. It therefore protects sensitive contents — such as facial oils, essential oil blends or serums with active ingredients — significantly better than clear glass. It does not, however, replace proper storage in a cool place, away from heat sources and with the closure firmly tightened.
How much can actually be filled into a 10 ml vial?
The vial is filled to the nominal volume of 10 ml, not to the brim. The total brim-full volume is greater; the difference serves as headspace for the dropper or closure seal and for expansion of the contents with temperature changes. Exact values are listed in the packaging specifications. Since you cannot see the fill level through black glass, measure the dose beforehand.
Is a black glass vial suitable for essential and fragrance oils?
Yes, glass is resistant to essential oils, fragrance compositions and alcohol, and will not absorb scent. The black finish additionally slows the fading and oxidation of aromatic components. For thin oils we recommend choosing a dropper closure, which dispenses drop by drop and prevents the contents from pouring out accidentally.
Can a glass vial be washed and reused?
Yes, the vial can be washed and refilled repeatedly. Once emptied, rinse it with warm water and a small amount of washing-up liquid, remove any oil residue, disinfect with alcohol and allow it to dry completely. Clean the narrow neck with a brush. Replace a dropper closure when the scent of the contents changes noticeably, as rubber and plastic parts retain fragrance.
Which closure fits a vial with an 18/410 thread?
The vial is compatible with closures of the same neck type, i.e. 18/410: both caps and droppers. The specific range and ready-made bottle + closure combinations are available in the Handymade range. With a custom combination, verify leak-tightness with the finished product, especially for alcohol-based and thin oil-based contents, which are more prone to leaking.
Can a black glass vial also be used for food?
Yes, the packaging is approved for direct contact with both food and cosmetics. It is therefore also suitable for small quantities of home-made herbal oils, flavourings or concentrated infusions. The approval applies to the vial itself. When combining it with a closure, refer to the information provided for that specific closure.
