Product description
The glass jar with dark brown glass and a black cap is a complete packaging and closure combination for creams, butters and balms whose formulation requires light protection. The set consists of three parts: a glass jar with a nominal volume of 100 ml, a black threaded plastic cap and an inner liner that sits between the contents and the cap. The packaging does not need to be assembled from individual parts and as a complete unit is declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products.
Dark brown glass absorbs a large portion of light, making it particularly suitable for formulations with vegetable oils, butters, vitamins or essential oils that oxidise faster and lose their scent in light. A volume of 100 ml corresponds to a facial or body cream, body butter or scrub for several weeks of use. At the same time, it is small enough for the contents to be used up before they start to age.
What the set contains
- Dark brown glass jar – reduces light penetration and slows the oxidation of oils, fragrance components and sensitive active ingredients. Glass does not react with common cosmetic raw materials, does not absorb scents and can be thoroughly cleaned after emptying.
- Black threaded cap – made from ABS plastic, with a foam polyethylene (EPE) seal inside. When tightened, it seats on the neck of the jar and improves the tightness of the closure.
- Inner liner – a white disc made of polypropylene (PP) that is placed directly on the surface of the contents after filling. It limits contact between the cream and the cap, prevents the contents from being forced onto the thread when tightening, and reduces air access to the product surface.
- Wide neck – the contents can be scooped out comfortably with a finger or spatula, the jar fills easily with thick butters and cleans without special tools.
Nominal and total volume
Two volumes are distinguished for jars. The nominal volume is the volume for which the packaging is designed for standard filling and which is stated on the label. The total volume to the neck is the physical volume of the jar up to the rim. The difference between them is a reserve for the inner liner and cap and for the behaviour of the contents, such as slight expansion with temperature changes. The jar is therefore filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. If filled to the neck, the liner would not seat properly and the cream would be forced onto the thread. Both values can be found in the product parameters.
Suitable products
- Face and body creams – emulsions with vegetable oils and active ingredients for which dark glass extends the stability of scent and colour.
- Body and whipped butters – the wide neck allows filling with thick mass and comfortable scooping without deforming the packaging.
- Balms and anhydrous ointments – glass does not impart odour to the contents and solidified mass can be scooped out easily.
- Sugar and salt scrubs – coarse particles do not scratch glass and the packaging is easy to rinse in the bathroom.
- Cream deodorants, solid perfumes and pomades – smaller doses of products with a higher proportion of essential oils, for which light protection is essential.
Preparation, filling and reuse
Before first filling, we recommend washing and disinfecting the jar, cap and liner with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allowing them to dry completely. Residual water in the jar shortens the shelf life of both emulsions and anhydrous products, so the packaging is filled only after thorough drying.
Glass does not tolerate sudden temperature changes. Do not pour hot balm or ointment into a cold jar – let the packaging warm to room temperature first, or pour the mass only after it has cooled slightly. Creams and emulsions are filled when already cooled.
The inner liner is inserted only onto a solidified or settled surface of the contents. For balms, this means waiting until the mass has fully hardened; for creams, it is sufficient to level the surface. The liner should lie flat on the contents, not leaning against the jar wall at an angle.
After opening, the customer usually sets the liner aside under the cap or discards it. If you are selling a finished product, it is worth noting on the label or in the instructions that the liner protects the cream from drying out and should be replaced after each use.
The set is designed for repeated use. After emptying, the jar is washed with warm water and detergent; ethanol helps to remove residual oils and butters. Wash the cap and liner with lukewarm water to avoid deforming the EPE seal. Before the next filling, disinfect all parts in the same way as for first use.
Good to know
- Cosmetics yes, food no – the set as a whole is declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products. It is not declared suitable for contact with food, so it is not used for home-made oils, syrups or other food products.
- Other closures – closures with the same neck type and ready-made combinations can be found in the Handymade range. With a custom combination, we recommend verifying the tightness and behaviour of the packaging with the specific formulation.
- Essential oils and alcohol – the PP liner separates the contents from the cap and is resistant to common cosmetic ingredients. For products with a high proportion of essential oils or alcohol, it is advisable to verify the behaviour of the cap and seal in a stability test.
- Labelling – the cylindrical body of the jar allows a wrap-around label or a label on the cap. The label is applied to a dry, degreased surface and a light or metallic print is most legible on dark glass.
- Weight and fragility – glass is heavier and more fragile than plastic. When shipping finished products, allow for protective padding and the higher weight of the shipment.
- Recycling – the jar belongs in glass waste, the cap and liner in plastics; separate the parts before discarding.
