Product description

A glass jar 30 ml in black glossy glass comes as a set with a black plastic lid and a white inner liner. It belongs to packaging for creams, balms and ointments in smaller sizes: eye and face creams, solid perfumes, lip balms, travel-size body butters or samples of larger products. The opaque black glass blocks light, so the contents are protected even without secondary packaging. The set is declared suitable for contact with cosmetics; a declaration of conformity is included with the product.

What the set includes

  • Glass jar – black glossy glass with a wide opening from which cream can be conveniently scooped with a finger or spatula. Glass does not react with oils, butters or essential oils, so it is suitable for anhydrous and more intensely fragranced products.
  • Plastic lid – black screw cap made of polypropylene with a seal. When tightened, it sits flush against the jar opening and prevents the contents from drying out.
  • Inner liner – a white polypropylene disc that is placed directly on the surface of the contents after filling. It protects the cream during transport, limits contact of the contents with air under the lid, and catches residue that would otherwise reach the thread.

Nominal volume and total volume

Nominal volume 30 ml is the volume for which the jar is designed for standard filling. The total volume to the brim is the physical volume up to the opening and is larger. The difference between them provides headspace for the inner liner, the lid seal, and expansion of the contents with temperature change. It should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. The liner needs space above the contents, otherwise it pushes cream onto the thread when closed.

Balms and butters that are poured warm should be left to set and cool completely in the jar without the lid. Only then place the liner and close. This prevents condensation from forming on the inside of the lid and liner.

What it is suitable for

The wide opening and low profile suit products that are scooped from the packaging: creams and ointments with a thicker texture, anhydrous balms, solid perfumes, lip scrubs or samples. A volume of 30 ml corresponds to an eye cream, an intensive face cream or a balm for several weeks of use. The dark glass is an asset for formulations sensitive to light, for example those containing vegetable oils prone to oxidation or active ingredients that lose efficacy in light.

Both the liner and the lid are made of polypropylene, which handles standard cosmetic formulations well. For products with a high proportion of essential oils or solvents, we recommend verifying the behaviour of the plastic parts in the finished formulation, as they come into direct contact with the contents.

Good to know

  • Preparation before first filling – wash the jar, lid and liner, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allow to dry completely. Residual water in an anhydrous balm promotes the growth of microorganisms.
  • Glass and heat – warm balm can be poured directly into the jar, but not scalding hot liquid into cold glass. A sharp temperature difference can crack the glass. Allow the jar to stand at room temperature before pouring, or warm it slightly.
  • Reuse – the jar can be refilled after washing and disinfecting. Check the seal in the lid. If it is deformed or saturated with oil, it no longer sits flush and the lid should be replaced.
  • Replacement closure – a closure is included with the set. If you need an additional one, Handymade's range includes lids with the same neck type as well as ready-made combinations. For a custom combination, we recommend checking tightness with the specific formulation.
  • Recycling – the jar goes in glass waste, the lid and liner (PP 5) in plastics. Separate them before disposal.

Black glass does not show how much contents remain in the jar, and any change in the product's colour is not visible either. If you offer a cream where the customer monitors usage or appearance, take this into account when choosing the packaging.

Frequently asked questions

Does the black glass jar protect the contents from light?
Yes, black glass is opaque and does not allow light to reach the contents. It is therefore suitable for creams and balms containing vegetable oils prone to oxidation or active ingredients sensitive to light. It does not protect against heat, however. A product in dark glass heats up in sunlight just as much as one in clear glass.
How much cream fits in the 30 ml glass jar?
The jar is filled with 30 ml, which is its nominal volume. Physically more will fit, but the headspace is reserved for the inner liner, the lid seal and expansion of the product. If filled to the brim, the liner would push cream onto the thread and the lid would not seal.
What is the inner liner in the glass jar for?
The liner is a white plastic disc placed on the surface of the cream under the lid. During transport it protects the surface of the contents from smearing, limits contact with air in the upper part of the jar, and catches residue that would otherwise soil the thread. During regular use, the customer either sets it aside after opening or places it back on the contents.
Can the 30 ml glass jar be reused?
Yes, the glass can be refilled after thorough washing and disinfection with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol. Wash the lid and liner separately and check the seal in the lid before reuse. A seal that is saturated with oil or deformed no longer sits flush and it is better to replace the lid.
Is the 30 ml glass jar suitable for oil-based balms and solid perfumes?
Yes, glass does not react with oils, butters or essential oils and anhydrous products do not change their scent in it. The balm is poured into the jar warm, not scalding hot, and left to set before closing. With a high proportion of essential oils, we recommend verifying the behaviour of the plastic liner and seal that come into contact with the contents.
