Product description
Rapeseed wax 9562 Pillar is a wax for casting free-standing candles in moulds. Once set, the candle keeps its shape, can be removed from the mould and burns without a container. The base of the raw material is hydrogenated rapeseed oil. Hydrogenation turns the liquid oil into a solid wax, which is worked in a similar way to other candle waxes.
It is sold by the kilogram, so you can order the amount that suits the size of your production, from a test batch to a larger one.
What candles it is suitable for
- Pillar candles – classic free-standing candles cast in cylindrical moulds of various diameters.
- Candles from shaped moulds – blocks, cones or decorative shapes that must hold their shape without a container.
- Scented candles – with a fragrance oil intended for candles, used at the rate recommended for the particular oil.
- Coloured candles – with dyes intended for candles.
This wax is not intended for container candles in jars, tins or ceramics. For those, use waxes prepared specifically for this type of candle.
How to work with the wax
Melt the wax gradually in a water bath or in a wax melting pot with temperature control. Monitor the temperature with a thermometer throughout the melting and just before pouring.
Stir the dye into the melted wax first, then the fragrance oil. Mix both thoroughly so that they are dispersed throughout the whole volume. The fragrance amount follows the recommendation for the particular fragrance oil. We do not state the maximum amount of fragrance that this wax can hold.
We do not state an exact pouring temperature for this wax. Fine-tune it on one or two test candles and note at which temperature the surface and appearance of the candle turned out the way you wanted.
The mould must be clean and dry before pouring, with the wick centred. The wax shrinks in volume as it sets, so with thicker candles a dip may form around the wick. Once the wax has partially set, top it up with a small amount of melted wax. Remove the candle from the mould only after it has cooled completely.
Do not melt the wax over an open flame or leave it unattended. Melted wax is hot and may smoke if overheated, so heat it gradually and use a thermometer.
Choosing a wick and the burn test
The wick is chosen according to the diameter of the candle, the amount of fragrance and the colour. The same wick may behave differently in a scented candle than in an unscented one. Before making a larger batch, we therefore recommend a burn test: the wax should melt evenly across the whole width, the flame should not be too high and the wick should not smoke.
For the burn test, let the candle burn for at least 2–3 hours at a time and record the results. Repeat the test whenever you change the fragrance oil, the dye or the diameter of the mould.
