Product description
A glass bottle, medicine bottle shape, 250 ml with a black low cap is a complete set of a dark glass bottle and a screw-on plastic closure. Dark glass reduces light penetration to the contents, making the set particularly suitable for vegetable and massage oils, herbal tinctures, alcohol extracts, tonics or hydrolats that are dispensed by pouring or decanting. The 250 ml volume corresponds to a larger home pack or a smaller production batch that is still comfortable to work with.
The set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products and also holds an attestation for direct food contact for both the bottle and the cap, so it can be used in the kitchen as well. The declaration of conformity for both components can be found with the product.
Key properties of the set
- Light protection – brown glass limits light transmission, which slows the oxidation of oils and the fading of coloured extracts. It does not, however, replace cool storage or an antioxidant in the formulation.
- Chemical resistance of glass – glass does not react with essential oils, alcohol or common solvents and does not absorb odours. The bottle can safely be used for strongly aromatic blends.
- Low plastic cap – a simple screw closure that opens and closes quickly. Suitable where the contents are poured or measured out, not dispensed drop by drop.
- Medicine bottle shape – the straight body sits well in the hand, stands stably and provides a flat surface for a label. Medicine bottle is the name of the shape, not a reference to the contents.
- Reusable – after washing and disinfecting, the bottle can be refilled; when the thread shows signs of wear, simply replace the cap.
What the set is suitable for
The best application is with oil-based contents: massage and body oils, oil macerations of herbs, carrier oil blends for further production, or a larger bottle of facial oil for decanting into smaller bottles. It works equally well for alcohol tinctures and extracts, where you will appreciate the glass's resistance to alcohol.
Among water-based products, tonics, hydrolats or facial waters applied by pouring onto a cotton pad are a good fit. With water-based contents, do not forget preservation; the packaging does not replace it. The set is not suitable for thick creams, masks or scrubs, as the medicine bottle neck is narrow and the contents would be difficult to get out.
Thanks to the food attestation, the set can also be used outside cosmetics – for home-made olive or pumpkin seed oil, flavoured vinegar, herbal syrup or a home-made dressing.
Filling and working with the packaging
The nominal volume is the volume for which the bottle is designed for normal filling. The total brim-full volume is the physical volume up to the neck and is always slightly larger. The difference creates a reserve for the closure and for the expansion of the contents with temperature changes, which is why filling is done to the nominal volume, not to the brim. Specific values can be found in the parameters.
Before the first fill, wash both the bottle and the cap, rinse and disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. Allow to dry completely; residual water in an oil-based product encourages microbial growth.
Tighten the cap by hand with moderate force. Over-tightening will not damage the plastic thread immediately, but it shortens its service life and does not improve the seal. With alcohol and oil-based contents, we recommend a leak test on one unit: lay the filled bottle on its side on a paper towel and leave it for several hours.
Good to know
Glass is sensitive to sudden temperature changes. Do not pour hot contents into a cold bottle, and do not place a filled bottle straight from the cold into warm water. Allow warm oils after maceration to cool to at least room temperature before filling.
Although dark glass protects against light, store filled bottles away from direct sunlight and heat sources. For sensitive oils, such as linseed or wheatgerm oil, glass does not eliminate the need for an antioxidant.
The low cap is a screw closure, not a dispenser. If you need to dispense the contents drop by drop or as a spray, choose a different closure with the same neck type or a ready-made bottle and closure combination from the Handymade range.
When using your own bottle and closure combination, we recommend verifying the seal, dispensing and behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation.
For the label, use the flat part of the bottle body. For oil-based products, choose paper labels with a strong adhesive, or cover them with clear film to prevent spilt oil from damaging them.
At the end of its service life, the bottle goes into glass recycling and the cap into plastics recycling. Before disposal, simply separate the two parts and rinse them out.
