Product description
Brown glass vial 100 ml with an 18 mm thread is designed for liquid preparations that require protection from light. Dark glass attenuates UV radiation and part of the visible light spectrum, making it particularly suitable for serums, facial and body oils, tinctures and botanical extracts, where light would accelerate oxidation and loss of efficacy. The 100 ml capacity corresponds to standard packaging for toners, hydrolats, hair or massage oils, and larger serums for several months of use.
Glass is chemically stable, does not release substances or odours into the contents, and tolerates alcohol-based, water-based and oil-based contents without altering their properties. The packaging is certified for contact with cosmetics and direct food contact. Vial is the name for the bottle shape with straight walls, not a designation for any specific content. The glass is sourced from manufacturing within the European Union.
Why choose brown glass
- Protection from light – brown glass filters most UV radiation and part of the visible spectrum. Oils rich in unsaturated fatty acids, essential oils, vitamin C, retinoids and botanical extracts remain more stable than in clear packaging.
- Inert material – glass does not react with essential oils, alcohol or acidic toners, which cannot be taken for granted with some plastics. The contents retain their fragrance and clarity.
- Reusability – the bottle can be washed, disinfected and refilled. Glass does not age or absorb odours from previous contents during normal cleaning.
- Standard neck size – the 18 mm thread is among the most widely used, so the selection of closures and ready-made combinations is broad.
Nominal and total volume
The stated 100 ml is the nominal volume, meaning the quantity the bottle is designed to hold during standard filling. The total capacity to the brim is larger, representing the physical volume up to the neck. Both values are listed in the product parameters. The difference provides a reserve for the closure, dropper tube or pump, and for expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. The bottle should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. If filled all the way to the neck, a dropper would displace the contents and the cap would not seat properly.
Choosing a closure
Closures with the same neck type as listed in the product parameters fit this vial. Their current range and ready-made bottle + closure combinations are available in the Handymade catalogue. When assembling your own combination, we recommend verifying the seal, dispensing and behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation before larger production runs. A thick oil behaves differently from a watery toner, and an alcohol tincture places higher demands on the seal.
Suitable for products such as
- Facial and body oils, oil serums – light is the main enemy of oils and dark glass attenuates it. With a dropper, they are dispensed drop by drop and applied precisely.
- Tinctures, botanical extracts and alcohol-based preparations – alcohol does not affect glass, and the contents can be measured out drop by drop.
- Toners, hydrolats and facial waters – 100 ml is a practical size for daily use. Depending on the closure chosen, they are applied by dropping, pouring into the palm or spraying.
- Hair, massage and bath oils – a larger dose per application, where the volume reserve and stable bottle shape are advantageous.
- Home food preparations – thanks to the food-contact certification, also suitable for flavoured oils, syrups, vinegars and herbal extracts.
Good to know before filling
- Preparation before first use – before filling, wash the bottles, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allow to dry completely. Residual water in an oil-based or anhydrous product promotes microbial growth.
- Glass and heat – the bottle tolerates warm filling, but not sudden thermal shock. Allow a hot oil phase to cool to at least lukewarm before filling, and do not pour hot contents into cold glass.
- Labelling – the straight walls of the vial provide a good base for labels; label dimensions for design purposes are listed in the product parameters. For oils, choose a label with grease-resistant adhesive, otherwise it will detach within a few weeks.
- Refilling – when reusing, remove all traces of previous contents thoroughly. Essential oils adhere to glass; washing in warm water with detergent followed by a rinse with alcohol helps.
- Recycling – once empty, brown glass goes into the coloured glass collection; the closure is sorted separately according to its material.
When filling oil serums and tinctures, fill the bottle to the shoulders, not to the neck. A dropper or pump takes up part of the volume and the contents would overflow when closing.
Glass is fragile and will break if dropped. When shipping to customers, use padding that prevents bottles from touching each other, and when filling a larger number of units, place them on a non-slip surface.
