Product description

A glass jar with an aluminium lid and inner liner is a complete set for creams, balms and body butters with a volume of 100 ml. The dark amber glass reduces light exposure, making it particularly suitable for formulations containing vegetable oils, essential oils and light-sensitive active ingredients. The wide opening makes it easy to fill thicker consistencies and to dispense them with a spatula. The lid with a seal closes the jar securely, and the white liner protects the product surface beneath the lid. The complete set is declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products and is not intended for food use.

What the set consists of

  • Dark amber glass jar – glass does not absorb fragrances or dyes, does not react with essential oils and can be thoroughly cleaned. The brown tint blocks a portion of light that would otherwise accelerate the oxidation of oils and fading of natural pigments.
  • Aluminium lid with seal – the screw lid has a foam sealing insert on the inside that seats onto the jar opening. The contents therefore do not come into direct contact with metal, and the tightened lid seals even during transport.
  • Inner liner made of PP – a flat white disc placed directly on the surface of the cream or balm. It reduces the air space above the product, prevents the contents from smearing onto the lid during shaking, and keeps the lid clean when opening.

What the jar is suitable for

The set is designed for products applied with a finger or spatula, not poured. Most commonly used for facial and body creams of O/W and W/O type, body butters, anhydrous balms and ointments, cream deodorants, hair or beard pomades, thicker masks and sugar or salt scrubs. A volume of 100 ml corresponds to a standard body cream or a larger packaging of balm. For facial creams, it is a larger format intended for several months of use.

The wide-neck jar is not suitable for liquid serums, tonics, oils and thin emulsions. Every time it is opened, the entire product surface is exposed, and dispensing a thin consistency is imprecise. These products belong in a bottle with a dropper or pump.

Nominal and total volume

Nominal volume is the volume for which the jar is intended under standard filling conditions. Total volume to the brim is the physical volume of the glass up to the opening and is larger. The difference creates a margin for the inner liner, the lid seal and for the expansion of contents with temperature changes. The jar should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. The exact values of both volumes are listed in the specifications.

The weight of the fill at 100 ml depends on the density of the formulation. Whipped body butter weighs significantly less at the same volume than a dense cream. We therefore recommend filling the first jar as a trial and weighing it before setting the declared weight for the entire batch.

Preparation and filling

Before the first fill, it is recommended to wash the jars, lids and liners, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave them to air-dry opening-down. Residual moisture in the jar has nowhere to go with anhydrous balms, and with aqueous creams it dilutes the preservation system at the surface.

Creams and butters processed cold or after cooling are filled with a spatula or filling bag, ensuring no air bubbles remain along the sides. Balms and ointments poured while hot are safe for glass, but it is important to avoid a sudden temperature change. The material is poured at the lowest temperature at which it still flows, and cold jars should be allowed to warm up to room temperature or slightly pre-warmed before pouring. They should cool at room temperature, not in the refrigerator, to prevent the balm from cracking or a dip forming in the centre.

Fit the inner liner only onto a completely cooled and solidified product, and tighten the lid only after that. With a warm mass, water vapour condenses beneath the liner, droplets of water on the cream surface compromise microbial stability, and the liner will stick to the product.

Good to know

  • Aqueous formulations and the metal lid – thanks to the seal and inner liner, the product does not normally come into contact with metal. For creams with a markedly acidic pH, a high proportion of essential oils or during extended transport, we recommend verifying the behaviour of the set with the specific formulation.
  • Dark glass conceals the contents – the colour and texture of the cream are not visible from outside. This is an advantage for stability, but the product must be presented to the customer through a label and description.
  • Labelling – the jar has a straight cylindrical wall suitable for a wrap-around label; the lid can carry a round label with a name or logo. The dimensions of both the jar and the lid are listed in the specifications.
  • Reuse – the glass jar and aluminium lid can be reused after washing and disinfection. Simply check that the foam seal is not compressed or damaged. The inner liner should be washed or replaced with a new one.
  • Recycling – before disposal, the set should be separated: glass goes into glass, the aluminium lid into metals and the PP liner into plastics.

Frequently asked questions

Does the dark amber glass jar protect the cream from light?
Yes, dark amber glass blocks a significant portion of light, thereby slowing the oxidation of oils and the fading of pigments in the formulation. It is not a complete barrier, so products with sensitive ingredients are still recommended to be stored away from direct sunlight. For creams containing vegetable oils, essential oils and antioxidants, amber glass is a better choice than clear glass.
What is the white inner liner in the glass jar for?
The inner liner is a flat polypropylene disc placed directly on the surface of the cream beneath the lid. It reduces the volume of air above the product, protects the surface during transport to prevent the cream from smearing onto the lid, and gives a neat appearance when opened. It should only be fitted onto a cooled and solidified product, otherwise moisture condenses beneath it.
Can I pour hot balm into the glass jar with an aluminium lid?
Yes, glass can withstand pouring hot balm, but it is important to avoid a sudden thermal shock. The material is poured at the lowest temperature at which it still flows, into jars at room temperature or slightly pre-warmed. The balm then cools at room temperature, not in the refrigerator, and the lid and liner are fitted only after the balm has fully solidified.
Is the 100 ml glass jar suitable for both aqueous creams and anhydrous balms?
Yes, the set is suitable for emulsion creams as well as anhydrous products, because glass does not react with water, oils or essential oils. For aqueous creams, the product normally does not come into contact with the aluminium thanks to the seal and liner. A thoroughly dried container before filling and an effective preservation system are important; for markedly acidic formulations we recommend testing the set with the formulation in advance.
Why is the glass jar not filled to the brim if it has a capacity greater than 100 ml?
The jar is filled to the nominal volume because the space above it serves as a margin for the inner liner, the lid seal and the expansion of contents with heat. If filled to the brim, the liner would sink into the product, cream would be forced onto the thread and the lid would not seal. The exact values of both the nominal and total volume are listed in the specifications.
