Product description

A black HDPE plastic bottle with a capacity of 500 ml and a black pump dispenser forms a ready-to-use set for products dispensed in single-hand doses: liquid soaps, shower gels, shampoos, conditioners, and body lotions. The opaque black plastic protects the contents from light, which is an advantage for formulations containing vegetable oils, extracts, and fragrances sensitive to light.

HDPE is a lightweight and shatterproof material, so the bottle holds up in the bathroom, in the shower, and in professional settings where glass would be a hazard. The half-litre volume is suited for family-size products, salon use, and formulations that are consumed quickly. The pump has a knurled collar that provides a secure grip when tightening and loosening, even with wet hands.

The set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products. It is not intended for food use.

What the set is suitable for

  • Liquid soaps and shower gels – the pump dispenses a dose without lifting the bottle, which is practical at the washbasin and in the shower.
  • Shampoos and conditioners – the larger volume lasts longer.
  • Body lotions and thinner emulsions – the pump dispenses them reliably while they remain liquid.
  • Massage and body oils – the shatterproof bottle is safer when working with greasy hands.
  • Technical preparations – for example, liquid surfactant-based cleaners; the set is available in both cosmetic and technical grade.

How the pump dispenses

One full press delivers approximately 1.8 ml of product. The dose is indicative; with thicker products it may be slightly less.

The pump works best with liquid to medium-viscosity products. It struggles to draw thick creams, butters, and high-viscosity gels, or may not draw them at all. Scrubs with coarse particles and products with undissolved additives may clog the mechanism. Very thin liquids will be dispensed by the pump, but the stream may splatter when pressed firmly.

The pump tube is longer than the bottle. Before first use, trim it at an angle so it ends just above the bottom. Then press the pump several times until the tube fills and the product starts to flow.

Nominal and total volume

Nominal volume is the volume the bottle is designed for during normal filling. Total volume to the brim is the physical capacity up to the neck and is slightly larger. The difference between them serves as a reserve for the pump tube, which displaces some of the contents when screwed in, and for expansion of the contents with temperature changes. The bottle should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. Exact values are listed in the product specifications.

Preparation before filling and repeated use

Before filling for the first time, wash the bottle, rinse it, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, and allow it to dry completely. Pump a small amount of disinfectant through the pump and leave it to dry separately from the bottle, so that residual alcohol does not get into the product.

The bottle can be refilled repeatedly after thorough washing and disinfection. The pump is harder to clean, as product residues remain in the mechanism and in the tube. For re-use, flush it by pumping through warm water followed by disinfectant. When changing formulation or for products intended for sale, we recommend using a new pump.

Do not fill the bottle with hot material. Plastic may deform under heat, so allow the product to cool before filling.

Good to know

  • The fill level is not visible – the black plastic is opaque; the remaining amount can only be estimated by the weight of the bottle. A measuring cup or scale is helpful when filling.
  • Preservation of water-based products – the pump limits contact between the contents and hands, but does not replace a proper preservation system.
  • Labelling – labels adhere well to the straight cylindrical section of the bottle; dimensions needed for label design are listed in the specifications. Light or contrasting labels stand out well against the black background.
  • Other closures – closures with the same neck type (listed in the specifications) and other ready-to-use combinations are available in the Handymade range. For custom combinations, we recommend verifying the seal, dispensing behaviour, and compatibility of the packaging with the specific formulation.

Frequently asked questions

What viscosity of products can the 500 ml black HDPE bottle with pump handle?
The pump reliably dispenses liquid to medium-viscosity products such as liquid soaps, shampoos, shower gels, conditioners, body lotions, and oils. It struggles or fails entirely with thick creams, body butters, and solid gels. Products with coarse particles, such as scrubs, may clog the mechanism, making wide-neck packaging more suitable for them.
Does the black HDPE bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, the opaque black plastic protects the contents from light. This is beneficial for products containing vegetable oils, extracts, vitamins, or fragrances that lose colour and scent more quickly when exposed to light. However, the packaging does not protect against oxygen or heat, so product stability also depends on antioxidants, preservation, and the storage location of the bottle.
Can the HDPE bottle with pump be filled to the brim?
No, the bottle should be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. The space above the fill line is a reserve for the pump tube, which takes up some volume when screwed in, and for expansion of the contents with temperature changes. An overfilled bottle will overflow when closing, and product will get into the thread, which compromises both the seal and the appearance of the packaging.
Is the black HDPE bottle suitable for products containing essential oils or alcohol?
HDPE bottles are suitable for finished cosmetic products with a standard proportion of essential oils, fragrances, or alcohol. Concentrated essential oils and organic solvents should not be stored in them, as they may gradually degrade the plastic and permeate through the bottle wall. For formulations with a higher proportion of these components, we recommend a test storage period of several weeks in a filled container.
How do I clean the HDPE bottle and pump before filling, and can they be reused?
The bottle simply needs to be washed, rinsed, disinfected with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, and left to dry completely; it can then be refilled repeatedly. Warm water is pumped through the pump, followed by disinfectant. Since product residues remain in the mechanism and tube, it is safer to use a new pump for products intended for sale or when changing formulation.
