Product description
KeraGreen soy wax container is a wax for making container candles, that is, candles poured directly into glass, tins or ceramics. It is made exclusively from soybean oil (partially hydrogenated soybean oil) and contains no paraffin. It adheres well to glass, does not shrink as it cools and gives off no unpleasant odour when burning.
The manufacturer’s raw material is certified ECOCERT and COSMOS Organic. The wax is vegan and free from ingredients derived from genetically modified crops.
What it is suitable for
- Container candles – the main use. The wax in the container adheres to the walls and does not have to hold its shape on its own.
- Scented candles – the wax has a neutral odour, adds no undertone to the candle and lets the fragrance oil or essential oils stand out.
- Coloured candles – the white base is easy to colour, and the shade comes out clean and without distortion.
This wax is not intended for free-standing candles made in moulds (pillars, cubes, figurines). Waxes labelled as pillar waxes are used for that purpose.
Properties during production and burning
The melting point is 48–52 °C and the setting point is 32–42 °C. The wax therefore does not need to be significantly overheated and it cools without crystallising.
The wax does not shrink or crystallise as it cools, so a container candle keeps a smooth, glossy surface with no sinking around the wick and no white crystalline spots.
Adhesion to glass is good on its own. The manufacturer states that it can be improved further by adding a small amount of vegetable butter or another fat to the melted wax. Keep the proportion of fats low.
Burning produces a soft, calm flame. No unpleasant odour is released during burning or after the candle is extinguished. Burn time depends on the diameter of the container and above all on the wick, so the right wick needs to be tested for each diameter.
Production procedure
Melt the wax slowly, ideally in a water bath or in a device with temperature control. The melting point is low, so it is enough to heat the wax to just above it.
Candle dye is dissolved in the hot wax before the fragrance is added. The fragrance oil is added after the wax is removed from the heat and mixed in thoroughly so that it is evenly dispersed throughout the wax. The recommended pouring temperature and the maximum fragrance oil rate are not stated for this wax. Follow the recommendation of the fragrance composition manufacturer and use a test candle to check that the wax holds the fragrance without sweating on the surface.
If you need better adhesion to glass, add a small amount of butter or another fat to the melted wax. A larger proportion changes the behaviour of the wax, so always test each mixture first.
A wick with a sustainer is glued to the bottom of the container before pouring and centred with a holder.
Good to know
- Containers only – the wax is not intended for moulds or free-standing candles. You must test any combination with pillar wax yourself.
- Added fats – only add butters or other fats to increase adhesion in small amounts.
- Choice of wick – the length and quality of the burn depend on the wick. Carry out a burn test for every new container diameter and every new fragrance.
- No sinking – thanks to zero shrinkage during cooling, a second top-up pour around the wick is mostly unnecessary.
