Product description

A brown plastic bottle protects its contents from light and weighs a fraction of what a glass bottle of the same size does. It is therefore well suited for products whose ingredients degrade more quickly in light – plant-based and massage oils, hair serums, tonics, and liquid preparations containing vitamins and essential oils. The bottle is made from PET and is filled to a nominal volume of 150 ml. It is lightweight, unbreakable, and suitable for shipping as well as everyday use in the bathroom, where glass would pose a hazard.

The packaging is suitable for use with cosmetic products and is also approved for direct contact with food, making it equally useful for home-made herbal oils, syrups, and infusions. The declaration of conformity and related documents are listed with the product.

Why choose brown PET

  • Light protection – the brown material limits light penetration to the contents. This is especially valuable for oils prone to oxidation, for essential oils, and for active ingredients sensitive to UV radiation. A dark container does not replace an antioxidant in the formulation, but it complements one.
  • Low weight and durability – a PET bottle is lightweight and will not break if dropped. Suitable for travel packaging, use in the shower, and shipping to customers.
  • Neck finish 28/410 – a widely used thread type compatible with closures of the same neck size from the Handymade range; ready-made bottle and closure combinations are also available. With a custom combination, we recommend verifying seal integrity and dispensing behaviour with the specific formulation.

Nominal and total volume

Nominal volume is the amount the bottle is designed to hold under normal filling conditions – here 150 ml. Total volume to the brim is the physical capacity up to the neck and is slightly larger. The difference provides headspace for the closure, a pump or sprayer that extends into the bottle, and for the expansion of contents with changes in temperature. Always fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim.

When using a pump or sprayer, leave enough space in the neck for the dip tube. Overfilling will cause the closure to displace some of the contents and leave the thread contaminated, which impairs the seal.

Suitable products include

  • Body and massage oils – the brown container slows yellowing and rancidity in light-sensitive oils.
  • Hair serums, treatments, and rinses – 150 ml is a practical volume for several weeks of use.
  • Tonics, facial mists, and micellar waters – water-based products with active ingredients that lose efficacy when exposed to light.
  • Liquid soaps, shampoos, and shower gels in smaller sizes – unbreakable plastic is safer in the shower than glass.
  • Home-made herbal oils, syrups, and infusions – thanks to food-contact certification.

What to know before filling

Before first use, rinse the bottle with warm water, or sanitise with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, and allow to dry completely upside down. Residual water in the container is the most common cause of microbial contamination in finished products, particularly in anhydrous oils without a preservative.

Fill the contents cooled, at room temperature. PET is not intended for hot filling – heated material may deform and alter the shape of the neck, causing it to lose its seal. Allow emulsions and gels to cool completely before filling; the same applies to oils after any heating step.

For concentrated essential oils, particularly citrus-based ones, and for blends with a high proportion of solvents, we recommend testing material compatibility on a single sample before filling a full production run. In finished cosmetic products with standard essential oil dosage levels, PET performs well; do not fill neat essential oils into plastic.

The bottle can be reused after thorough washing. Do not use aggressive cleaning chemicals or abrasive tools that scratch the surface and create sites where contaminants can accumulate. Do not reuse a deformed, cracked, or cloudy container. The straight wall of the bottle holds labels well. Empty containers belong in sorted plastic waste collection according to material code PET 1.

Frequently asked questions

Does the brown PET bottle protect its contents from light?
Yes, the brown colouring of PET limits light penetration and provides better protection than a clear container. For common cosmetic products – oils, serums, tonics – the protection is sufficient, especially when the product is stored out of direct sunlight. For particularly sensitive ingredients, it is advisable to combine a dark container with an antioxidant in the formulation and a shorter shelf life.
How much does the 150 ml bottle actually hold?
The bottle is designed to be filled to 150 ml, which is its nominal volume. Its physical capacity to the brim is slightly greater, but this space is reserved for the closure, the dip tube of a pump or sprayer, and for the expansion of contents with changes in temperature. Always fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim.
Is the plastic bottle suitable for oils and alcoholic tinctures?
For plant-based and massage oils, the brown PET bottle is suitable, and the dark material additionally slows their oxidation. For alcoholic infusions, concentrated essential oils, and blends with a high proportion of solvents, we recommend testing material behaviour on a single sample before filling a full series. Do not expose the container to aggressive chemicals.
What closure fits the bottle with a 28/410 neck finish?
Any closure with a 28/410 thread fits the bottle; these are available in the Handymade range along with ready-made bottle and closure combinations. Choose the closure type based on the consistency of the product and the dispensing method – a thin oil calls for a different option than a thick shampoo. With a custom combination, verify the seal of the filled bottle laid on its side and check how the closure performs with the specific formulation.
Can the 150 ml brown plastic bottle be reused?
Yes, after thorough washing and drying the bottle can be used again. Wash it with warm water and a mild cleaning agent, rinse, optionally sanitise with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol, and allow to dry completely. When refilling cosmetics without a preservative, sanitising is more important than for single use. Replace any cloudy, scratched, or deformed container.
Can I fill food products into the PET bottle?
Yes, the container is approved for direct contact with food under normal conditions of use. It is suitable for home-made herbal oils, syrups, infusions, or flavoured vinegars, while the brown material simultaneously protects them from light. Fill with cooled contents at room temperature; hot filling into PET is not suitable.
