Product description

The HDPE plastic bottle with a white flip top cap is a ready-made set for packaging liquid and semi-liquid cosmetic products with a volume of 100 ml. The bottle, made of opaque white HDPE, shields the contents from light better than clear plastic, is lightweight, unbreakable and squeezable, so the product is dispensed directly through the opening in the cap. The flip top cap opens one-handed with your thumb and, once closed, protects the opening from dust and the contents from drying out.

The 100 ml volume suits travel packaging, samples for customers and home formulations that are used up within a few weeks. The set as a whole is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetics. Only the cap has a separate certificate for direct food contact, so we offer the set for cosmetic use.

Suitable uses

  • Shower gels and liquid soaps – squeezing the bottle dispenses the amount into your palm, and the cap can be opened even with a wet hand.
  • Shampoos and conditioners – thicker contents flow out in a controlled way, and the flip top stays closed in the shower.
  • Body lotions and light creams – for emulsions that still flow, squeezing works better than scooping from a jar.
  • Facial toners, hydrolates and tonics – thin contents flow out of the flip top faster, so test the dispensing first. For spraying, a fine mist sprayer with the same neck finish is more suitable.
  • Massage and body oils – pure vegetable oils as well as oil blends that are dispensed into the palm.

Nominal and total volume

The nominal volume is the amount the packaging is designed for under normal filling. The total brimful volume is the physical volume of the bottle up to the neck and is usually slightly larger. The difference between them is a reserve for the cap and for the expansion of the contents with temperature changes, for example in a bathroom or in a car. The bottle should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. An overfilled bottle is harder to squeeze once closed, and the contents may squirt out when it is opened.

Fill thicker contents, such as gels and shampoos, using a funnel or from a container with a spout, and let the contents settle before closing so that no air bubble is trapped in the neck.

Use and filling

Before the first filling, wash the bottle and the cap, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave them to dry completely. Moisture remaining in the packaging can spoil a water-based product sooner than its preservation would suggest.

Fill only cooled contents. HDPE is a plastic, and a hot emulsion or gel straight after production may deform the bottle. Let the emulsion cool to room temperature while stirring, and only then fill.

After filling, tighten the cap by hand. For your own combination of packaging and closure, check the seal, the dispensing and the behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation, for example by leaving the filled bottle on its side overnight. You can find other closures with the same neck type and ready-made combinations of bottle and closure in the Handymade range.

A flip top is not a safety closure. When travelling, place the bottle in a bag in your suitcase or handbag, because strong pressure may push the contents out through the opening in the cap.

Good to know

HDPE withstands water-based products, emulsions, surfactant preparations and vegetable oils. For contents with a higher proportion of essential oils, solvents or alcohol, run a test on one bottle. After several weeks, check that the plastic has not softened or changed colour and that the cap still seals.

After thorough washing and disinfection, you can reuse the bottle and the cap, preferably for the same type of product. The scent of the previous contents cannot always be removed from the plastic completely and may carry over when the formulation changes.

The bottle is made of HDPE and the cap of polypropylene. Both materials are recycled as plastic, and it is enough to rinse the packaging before disposal.

Frequently asked questions

Does the white HDPE bottle protect the contents from light?
Partially, yes. Opaque white HDPE lets through less light than clear plastic, so it is also suitable for products with vegetable oils and active ingredients that are harmed by light. However, it is not the same protection as dark glass. Store light-sensitive products away from direct sunlight, even in this bottle.
Is the flip top bottle set suitable for food?
No, the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics. Only the white flip top cap has a separate certificate for direct food contact, while the 100 ml HDPE bottle itself does not. For homemade oils, syrups or infusions, choose packaging whose suitability for food contact is stated for each component.
How much product fits into a 100 ml bottle?
The bottle is designed to be filled to the nominal volume of 100 ml. Physically it holds slightly more, but this space serves as a reserve for the cap and for the expansion of the contents with temperature changes. Filling to the brim makes dispensing by squeezing harder and increases the risk of the contents leaking out when the bottle is opened.
Can a thick cream be dispensed through the flip top?
It depends on the thickness. The flip top works with contents that can be pushed out by squeezing the bottle: gels, shampoos, body lotions and light creams. A thick, high-viscosity cream passes through the opening in the cap with difficulty, and squeezing strains the bottle. For such products, a jar or a pump is more suitable.
Can I fill an HDPE bottle with a product containing essential oils?
Yes, at the usual usage rate of essential oils in cosmetics, the plastic does not normally change its properties. For blends with a high proportion of essential oils, solvents or alcohol, run a test on one bottle first. After several weeks, check that the plastic has not softened or changed colour and that the cap seals.
How do I prepare the bottle before filling, and can it be reused?
Before the first filling, wash the bottle and the cap, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave them to dry. Once the contents are used up, the packaging can be refilled after the same preparation. The scent of the previous product may not be removed from the plastic completely, so refilling works best with the same type of product.
