Product description

Wooden wick .02 green, 15.9 mm – complete with sustainer

A flat wooden wick in a green shade is designed for making container candles that burn with a gentle wood crackling and a wide, calm flame. The wick is single-ply, consisting of one thin wooden strip, and comes complete with a metal sustainer that holds it upright at the bottom of the container. The coloured strip works especially well where the wick is part of the candle's visual design: in clear or light-coloured wax the green shade remains visible and can be coordinated with forest, herbal, or Christmas themes.

The wick is made in the USA from certified wood. The manufacturer describes it as natural, allergen-free, and biodegradable.

Key features

  • Crackling when burning – the wooden strip produces a quiet crackling sound during burning, reminiscent of a fireplace. This is exactly why wooden wicks are chosen over cotton ones.
  • Wide, low flame – the flat wick spreads the flame horizontally, which helps melt the wax surface evenly all the way to the container wall and reduces tunnelling.
  • Single ply, thickness .02 – the .02 designation refers to the strip thickness in the manufacturer's system; a higher number means a thicker strip. The thinner single-ply version produces a gentler flame than double or thicker variants.
  • Width 15.9 mm – a medium-width wick for standard glass containers of average diameter. The right size depends on the wax and fragrance, so a test pour is always required.
  • Metal sustainer included – the round metal base holds the strip firmly and upright, so the wick does not tip when wax is poured. The sustainer is also suitable for double and cross wooden wicks.

Use in candle making

Wooden wicks are used in container candles. Every combination of wax, fragrance blend, and container diameter behaves differently, so the wick should always be tested with a test pour, and if the flame is too weak, switch to a thicker or wider strip.

The process is straightforward: insert the wick into the sustainer, fix the sustainer to the centre of the container bottom (with an adhesive dot or a drop of hot wax), and pour the wax at the temperature recommended for that wax type. Once fully set, trim the wick just above the wax surface. A wooden wick that is too long burns weakly or goes out.

Before the first light, let the poured candle cure for several days, and during the first burn allow the candle to burn until the melt pool reaches the edge of the container. With a wooden wick, this prevents tunnelling, which is difficult to correct later.

Good to know

  • Fragrance and dye affect burning. A higher proportion of fragrance blend or a denser dye can "clog" the wooden wick and reduce the flame. A test pour with melt pool monitoring is therefore needed for every new formula.
  • Choosing the width. If the flame after lighting does not melt the surface across the full diameter, switch to a wider or thicker wick. If it smokes and flickers, the wick is too strong for the container.
  • Maintenance between burns. Before each subsequent lighting, snap or trim the charred end off the strip. An untreated wick burns less efficiently and may produce smoke.
  • Not intended for insertion into hardened wax. The wooden wick is placed before pouring; inserting it into a finished pour does not give a stable result.
  • The sustainer is reusable. Once the candle has burned down, remove it, clean off any wax residue, and it is ready for the next pour.

Wooden wick or cotton?

A cotton wick burns more quietly, with a taller and narrower flame. A wooden wick brings crackling, a wider melt pool, and a more striking look, but requires more precise matching to the wax, fragrance, and container diameter. Neither is better or worse, just different. The choice comes down to the result you want from the candle.

Frequently asked questions

What type of wax is the wooden wick .02 suitable for?
The wooden wick .02 is designed for container candles, and the specific wax should always be verified with a test pour. Flame behaviour is affected by wax hardness, the proportion of fragrance blend, and container diameter. If the flame in your chosen wax does not melt the surface across the full diameter, switch to a thicker or wider strip.
How short should the wooden wick be trimmed?
The wooden wick is trimmed just above the wax surface, and the exact height is determined by a test pour. A strip that is too long burns weakly, smokes, or goes out; one that is too short may drown in the melted wax. Before each subsequent lighting, snap or trim the charred end off.
Why does the wooden wick go out or burn with a small flame?
The most common causes are a wick that is too long, a high proportion of fragrance blend, or a container that is too large for the 15.9 mm width. Trimming the strip, reducing the fragrance load, or switching to a thicker or wider strip will help. Always verify behaviour with a test pour.
Is the sustainer included and can it be reused?
Yes, the wick comes complete with a round metal sustainer that holds the strip upright at the bottom of the container. Once the candle has burned down, remove the sustainer, clean off any wax residue, and it can be used for the next pour. The same sustainer is also suitable for double and cross wooden wicks.
Will the green colour of the wick remain visible after pouring the wax?
It will, as long as the wax is clear or light-coloured. In white, beige, or light green wax the green strip is clearly visible and becomes part of the candle's appearance. In dark-coloured wax the shade disappears and the wick looks like a plain wooden one.
