Product description

The plastic jar with a black lid, 200 ml, is a ready-made combination of container and closure designed for creams, body butters, scrubs, masks and other thicker preparations applied with fingers or a spatula. The brown PET jar is lightweight, shatter-resistant and reduces light exposure to the contents, which is appreciated for products with vegetable oils, extracts or essential oils. The black screw-on lid closes the jar. Together they form a set suitable for home production as well as packaging smaller batches for sale.

The set is approved for direct food contact, so it can also be used for homemade spreads, honey, spice blends, dried herbs or bath salts. The set also declares suitability for contact with cosmetics. The declaration of conformity and certificate are listed with the product.

What the set is suitable for

  • Creams and body butters – the wide neck allows comfortable scooping even with firmer textures that would be difficult to dispense from a pump bottle.
  • Scrubs and masks – sugar or salt scrubs, clay masks and pastes are easy to fill into the jar and equally easy to take out.
  • Balms and cream deodorants – anhydrous preparations with waxes and butters can be poured directly into the jar and left to set.
  • Foods and herbs – dried blends, honey or bath salts prepared at home.

The 200 ml volume is suitable where the product is used regularly and a larger package makes sense: body butters, scrubs, body masks or bath salts. For facial creams that are dispensed in small amounts and should be used up quickly, it is more sensible to opt for a smaller jar.

How the set works

The jar has a 70/400 thread and the lid fits it directly. The lid is made of polypropylene and contains a foam polyethylene insert that, when tightened, seats against the rim of the neck and improves the seal. For creams and anhydrous preparations, standard hand-tightening is sufficient. For thin or liquid contents, we recommend verifying the seal, as a wide-neck jar is not intended for transporting liquids in a horizontal position.

The brown tint of PET reduces light exposure, but it is not a complete barrier like an opaque container. For light-sensitive preparations it is a meaningful protection, but the finished product should not be left in direct sunlight regardless.

Fill the jar to the nominal volume, not to the rim. The lid will then not push the contents out when tightened, and the cream has room for slight expansion when the temperature changes.

Nominal and total volume

Two figures are distinguished for packaging. The nominal volume is the volume for which the container is intended for standard filling, and this is the figure stated on the product label. The total volume to the rim is the physical volume of the jar up to the neck. The difference between them provides a reserve for the closure and for expansion of the contents during temperature fluctuations. Specific values are listed in the product parameters.

Good to know

  • Preparation before first filling – we recommend washing both the jar and the lid, disinfecting with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allowing to dry completely. Residual moisture in an anhydrous balm or butter is not desirable.
  • Essential oils and solvents – PET is resistant to common cosmetic raw materials. With a high proportion of essential oils, alcohol or other solvents, however, we recommend verifying compatibility on a single unit before filling an entire batch.
  • Reuse – the jar can be used again after thorough washing and disinfection. Before reuse, check the insert in the lid to ensure it is not damaged or saturated.
  • Labelling – the smooth cylindrical wall of the jar is suitable for a wrap-around label, the lid for a round label on top.
  • Recycling – the jar is made of PET and the lid of polypropylene. Separate them before disposal and place in plastics recycling.

PET deforms at higher temperatures. Do not pour hot wax and butter blends into the jar immediately after melting. Allow them to cool slightly until they begin to thicken, and only then fill.

If you want to use a different type of closure, select it according to the neck type stated in the parameters. Further closures and ready-made combinations can be found in the Handymade range. With your own combination, we recommend verifying the seal and the behaviour of the container with your specific formulation.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 200 ml plastic jar with a black lid suitable for food?
Yes, the set of jar and lid is approved for direct food contact. It is therefore suitable not only for cosmetics, but also for homemade spreads, honey, dried herbs, spice blends or bath salts. The declaration of conformity for both components is listed with the product.
Does the brown PET jar protect the contents from light?
The brown tint of PET reduces light exposure to the contents, but it is not completely opaque. For creams and butters with vegetable oils or extracts it is a useful protection that slows light-induced oxidation. We nonetheless recommend storing the product away from direct sunlight and away from heat sources.
Can a hot balm or body butter be poured into a PET jar?
Not directly from a water bath. PET deforms at higher temperatures, so allow the melted blend of waxes and butters to cool until it starts to thicken at the edges, and only then pour it into the jar. At this temperature it will no longer damage the container and the balm will set in it without any issues.
To what volume is the 200 ml jar filled?
To the nominal volume of 200 ml, not to the rim. The headspace between the fill level and the neck ensures that the lid does not push out the contents when tightened and that the cream has room to expand when the temperature changes. The total volume to the rim is larger and is listed in the product parameters.
Is the jar and lid set suitable for liquid preparations?
For thick and semi-solid preparations yes, for thin liquids we do not recommend it. The wide neck of the jar is designed for scooping creams, scrubs and butters, not for storing liquids that could seep through the thread when tilted. For tonics, oils or hydrolates a bottle with a closure designed for liquids is more suitable.
Can the plastic jar and lid be reused?
Yes, after thorough washing and disinfection with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. Allow both components to dry completely before refilling. Check the sealing insert in the lid. If it is damaged or saturated with the previous contents, the seal may no longer be reliable and it is better to replace the lid.
