Product description

The black 500 ml container with a white lid is designed for thicker products that are scooped out with a spatula or by hand: body butters, scrubs, bath salts, clay and hair masks, or family-size packs of cream. The Plastic container, 100 mm, black, 500 ml set consists of a PET container, a white lid with a thread and a white membrane, which is inserted into the lid and improves the seal between the lid and the neck.

The opaque black wall shields the contents from light, which helps with products containing oils, butters and light-sensitive active ingredients. It also hides any uneven colouring of the product. The plastic is lightweight and does not break when dropped, so the container is suitable for the bathroom, the workshop and for transport.

All three parts of the set are approved for direct food contact, so the container can also be used for homemade spice blends, dried herbs, salt, sugar or other loose raw materials. Suitability for contact with cosmetics is declared for the whole set.

Nominal and total volume

The nominal volume is the amount the container is designed for under normal filling. The physical volume up to the rim is larger, because a reserve must remain above the level of the product for the lid with the membrane and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. The container should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the rim. For scrubs and butters, which settle further after filling, also leave room for levelling the surface.

Lid and sealing

The lid is screwed onto the thread of the container and the membrane inside the lid sits against the neck. With thick products such as butters, balms and scrubs, the set holds the contents even when turned upside down or carried in a bag. For runnier products, for example gel scrubs or thin hair masks, we recommend checking the seal on a test piece: fill the container, close it, turn it upside down and leave it standing for several hours.

Insert the membrane into the lid so that it lies flat along its entire circumference. A creased or shifted membrane does not seal, and the lid then closes fully on one side only.

Closures with the same neck type and ready-made packaging and closure combinations are available in the Handymade range. If you use your own combination, we recommend checking the seal and the behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation.

What to know before filling

  • Preparation – before first use, wash the container, lid and membrane, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let them dry completely. Residual water dilutes the product and increases the risk of microbial growth.
  • Filling temperature – the container is not designed for hot filling. Before pouring, let melted butters, balms and emulsions cool at least to the point where the mixture starts to set. Do not pour the hot mixture straight from the pot into the container.
  • Essential oils and solvents – for products with a higher proportion of essential oils, fragrance compositions or alcohol, first fill one test piece and after several weeks check the surface of the container and the fragrance of the contents.
  • Reuse – after washing and disinfection, the container and the lid can be used again. When refilling, check the membrane and replace it if it is deformed.
  • Recycling – the container, lid and membrane are made of different plastics. Separate them before disposal so that they can be sorted by material.

The black wall hides a change in the colour of the contents. It does not hide a change in fragrance or texture, so for products without a preservative and for products with a water phase, check the contents each time you open the container, just as you would in clear packaging.

Frequently asked questions

Does the black plastic container protect the contents from light?
Yes, the black wall of the container is opaque and light does not pass through it to the contents. It is therefore suitable for body butters, balms and scrubs with vegetable oils, which lose quality faster in light. However, the plastic does not protect against heat, so do not leave the container in a sunny spot or near a heat source.
Can the 500 ml container be filled with hot product?
No, the container is not designed for hot filling. Before pouring, let melted butters, balms and emulsions cool to the point where they start to thicken, and do not pour them into the container straight from the pot. Hot filling may deform the bottom and the wall, which impairs the fit of the lid and the seal of the set.
Is the container and lid set suitable for food?
Yes, the container, lid and membrane all have a declaration of suitability for direct food contact, so the set as a whole can be used for food purposes. It is suitable for loose raw materials, spice blends, dried herbs, salt or sugar. Before first use, wash the set and let it dry, just as you would for cosmetics.
What is the white membrane in the container lid for?
The membrane is inserted into the lid and sits against the neck of the container, which improves the seal of the closure. It helps especially with thick products that could otherwise get between the thread and the lid during transport, and it limits the access of air to the contents. It must lie flat along its entire circumference, otherwise the lid will only close partially.
How much product actually fits into the 500 ml container?
The container is filled to the nominal volume, that is, approximately 500 ml of product. The space above this level forms a reserve for the lid with the membrane and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. For butters and scrubs, also allow for the product settling; once it has set, the surface can be levelled with a spatula.
