Product description
A complete set for filling thick creams, butters and scrubs: a clear plastic jar with a nominal volume of 200 ml, a white screw-on lid and a sealing membrane that fits inside the lid. The jar is made of PET, making it lightweight, shatterproof when dropped, and allowing the colour and texture of the contents to be seen through the transparent wall. It is therefore well suited to products where the appearance of the filling is meant to do the talking – coloured body butters, scrubs with visible particles or layered bath salts. The wide neck makes filling with a spatula and scooping with fingers easy, which is more practical than a narrow-necked bottle when working with creams and butters.
The set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products and is also approved for direct food contact – the jar, lid and membrane each have their own declaration of conformity, which you will find on the product page. It is therefore equally well suited for homemade spreads, honey, dried herbs or spice blends.
How the jar, lid and membrane work together
The lid screws onto the jar; both share the same neck type, so the set fits together precisely. The white polypropylene lid is slightly flexible and its colour visually closes off the transparent jar, giving the label on the lid a clean background.
The membrane is a thin white insert made of lightweight foam. When the lid is tightened, it seats on the jar neck and evens out minor imperfections, making the closure tighter than the plastic lid alone. For creams and butters, this limits drying out of the contents at the rim; for loose products it helps keep moisture out. It is not, however, a seal for thin liquids – the screw-top jar is designed for thick and semi-solid textures, not for tonics or oils that would reach the thread when inverted.
All three parts of the set have a certified declaration of conformity for both food and cosmetics contact. You can therefore use the same packaging in your workshop for a cream and in the kitchen for a spread without needing to stock two types of jars.
Suitable for products such as
- Body butters and balms – the wide neck allows scooping even with a firmer consistency, and the membrane limits drying at the rim.
- Body and hand creams – thicker emulsions scooped with fingers or a spatula; the clear wall shows how much product remains.
- Salt and sugar scrubs – particles remain visible and the humid bathroom environment is better tolerated by a plastic container than a paper tub.
- Masks, clays and loose mixtures – powder masks, bath salts or effervescent blends, where the membrane helps protect the contents from moisture.
- Home food products – spreads, honey, dried herbs, spices, seeds or smaller samples.
- Samples and test batches – the transparent packaging makes it easy to compare colour and texture between batches.
Nominal and total volume
With the jar you will encounter two volumes. The nominal volume is the volume for which the packaging is intended for normal filling – this is stated in the product name. The total volume to the rim is the physical volume up to the neck and is slightly larger. The difference provides a reserve for the lid with membrane and for expansion of the contents, for example when butter softens at higher temperatures or when a cream is compressed when scooped. The jar is therefore filled to the nominal volume, not to the rim. An overfilled jar is harder to close, the contents get onto the thread and the lid no longer seats properly.
What is good to know when filling
Before first filling, wash the jar and lid, sanitise with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave to dry completely. The membrane only needs to be wiped down and left to dry.
Content temperature is important with PET. The jar is not designed for hot filling. Pour butters and balms only after partial cooling, when the mass starts to thicken, and fill finished creams when cold. Hot contents can deform or cloud the wall and affect the seal of the thread.
If you are filling a butter or balm that sets, leave the jar open until the contents have set at room temperature, and only then fit the lid with the membrane. This prevents condensation forming under the lid.
Fragrance and essential oils at normal dosage in a cream or scrub will not harm the jar. Do not fill the PET jar with undiluted essential oils, fragrance compositions or solvents – glass packaging is more appropriate for these.
With a clear jar containing coloured contents, a label on the lid alone is often sufficient, leaving the side wall free so the product can be seen.
Reuse is possible – PET and polypropylene wash well. After thorough washing and drying, check that the membrane holds its shape and the lid still seals. If the membrane has taken on the scent or colour of the previous contents, replace it.
Recycling: the jar is made of PET and the lid of polypropylene. Separate the two parts before disposal and remove the membrane; both main components go into plastic recycling.
The clear jar does not protect the contents from light. Products with sensitive ingredients, such as vitamin C, retinol or unrefined oils, should be stored in the dark or in packaging made of amber or dark material.
