Candle colourants

Shade overview

• White: boosts opacity and shade purity — an opaque base for full colours and soft pastel tones.
• Yellows and oranges: sunflower yellow, light yellow, orange, light orange, warm orange and spicy cinnamon — bright warm tones that pair well with autumn and kitchen fragrances (citrus, spices).
• Reds and wines: red, crimson, wine red and fruity blackberry — full, saturated colours for festive and romantic collections; a pinch of dark brown or black gives a deeper tone.
• Blues and greens: royal blue, ocean blue, azure green, emerald green, pea green, lime green, ultramarine green and classic green — cool, stable shades for fresh and natural collections; tone them into pastels with white.
• Violet and browns: violet, brown and dark brown complement autumn, gourmand and woody fragrances; when softening is needed, white helps here too.
• Black: a deep, dramatic effect with high contrast; smooth the undertone with a pinch of dark brown.

Dosage and mixing

• Dosage: start low, around 0.05–0.2% of wax weight, and add in small steps until you reach the target intensity.
• Mixing: sprinkle the colourant into fully melted wax at the temperature recommended by the wax manufacturer and stir for 60–120 seconds; if undissolved lumps remain after stirring, strain the wax through a fine sieve before pouring.
• Test pour: before pouring a batch, check the evenness and the final shade on a small sample.
• Wick and fragrance: dark, heavily pigmented candles may need a thicker wick — always run a burn test with the final shade and fragrance; you will find the right size in the candle wicks category.
• Repeatability: for large runs, keep shade samples and note your pouring temperatures.
