Wick trimmers

Wick trimmers cut the candle wick to the right length even in places ordinary scissors cannot reach. A wick that is too long smokes, produces a high flame, and the candle burns unevenly. A trimmed wick burns cleanly and steadily, the glass stays soot-free and the container does not overheat.

Thanks to the long curved arm you can reach the bottom of deeper glasses and containers without touching the wax or the sides. The blades close at an angle, so you can trim the wick just above the wax surface even when the candle is partially burned and the flame sits lower in the container.

Key benefits

  • Curved arm – precise cut at the bottom of glasses and narrow containers without touching the sides or wax.
  • Cleaner burning – a regularly trimmed wick reduces smoking, soot on the glass and overheating of the container.
  • Catching the trimmed end – shaped blades hold the cut piece of wick so it does not fall into the melted wax.
  • Practical size – a length of 18 cm gives good reach while the scissors remain comfortable to hold in one hand.

Use

The scissors are useful both in candle making and in everyday candle use. Before each lighting, trim the wick to approximately 5 mm, and for wooden wicks rather to 3 – 4 mm. They are equally practical for the final finishing of freshly poured candles, where the wicks need to be levelled to a uniform length.

They are suitable for container candles in glasses and tins, where the wick is hard to reach, as well as for free-standing and moulded candles.

Always trim the wick on a cooled candle. Remove the charred wick remnant before lighting so that soot does not fall into the wax and the flame burns evenly.

What is good to know

After use, wipe the blades clean of wax residue so they do not stick or clog. The scissors are not dishwasher-safe; wiping and occasional degreasing is sufficient. Cut a thicker wooden wick in one firm motion rather than several small cuts, otherwise the edge will fray.

Frequently asked questions

What are wick trimmers used for?
Wick trimmers shorten the candle wick to the correct length before lighting. A trimmed wick burns more cleanly, smokes less and the flame stays stable, so the container glass does not blacken and the wax does not overheat. The long curved arm lets you reach even the wick at the bottom of a deep container, where ordinary scissors would catch the wax or the sides.
Why use wick trimmers instead of ordinary scissors?
Ordinary scissors cannot reach the wick at the bottom of a glass without touching the wax or the sides. The curved arm shape and angled blades of wick trimmers allow a precise cut just above the wax surface even in narrow and deep containers. The shaped blades also hold the cut piece so it does not fall into the melted wax.
To what length should the wick be trimmed?
A cotton wick is trimmed to approximately 5 mm before each lighting, a wooden wick rather to 3 – 4 mm. A wick that is too long produces a high flame, smokes and deposits soot on the glass. A wick that is too short may drown in the melted wax, so trim just above the wax surface, not deeper.
Are wick trimmers suitable for wooden wicks too?
Yes, wick trimmers handle both cotton and wooden wicks. A wooden wick is thicker and harder, so cut it in one firm motion to prevent the edge from fraying. Trim it to 3 – 4 mm, which is slightly shorter than a cotton wick, and remove the charred remnant before lighting.
How are wick trimmers maintained?
After use, simply wipe the blades clean of wax residue and degrease as needed. Do not put them in the dishwasher; hand-wiping is sufficient to keep the blades clean and cutting smoothly. Stuck wax would otherwise clog the blades and the cut would be imprecise.
