What's in the set

Product description

The Ultimate series wooden wick is a flat wooden strip designed for making container candles. It burns with a wide flame and melts wax across the full width of the strip. It comes complete with a metal stand that holds the wick perpendicular to the bottom of the container, so it does not need to be purchased separately.

The wick is made from certified wood. The manufacturer describes it as natural, allergen-free and biodegradable.

What makes a wooden wick stand out

  • Wide flame – the strip burns across its full width, so the wax surface melts more evenly to the sides than with a narrow flame.
  • Burn character – wooden wicks are known for a quiet crackling sound, though this cannot be guaranteed for every candle.
  • Candle appearance – a straight wooden strip looks clean inside the container.
  • Universal stand – the round metal stand suits flat, double and cross wooden wicks and makes centring easier.

How to read the wick designation

The designation .04 indicates the strip thickness according to the manufacturer's coding. A higher number means a thicker strip. Together with the width of 19.1 mm, it determines how much wax the wick can melt and burn.

When selecting, both parameters are considered together:

  • Width – chosen according to the inner diameter of the container.
  • Thickness – chosen according to how dense the wax is and how much fragrance and dye the candle contains.

Use in candle making

The wick is inserted into the stand and the stand is attached to the centre of the container base. The wax is then poured around the wick. The strip is rigid and holds its shape, so it usually does not need to be re-centred during setting.

After setting, the wick is trimmed to a low height above the wax surface. The strip length provides extra length for taller containers; in shorter ones it is simply cut down.

An overly long wooden wick is a common reason why a candle goes out or burns unevenly. Before each lighting, it is recommended to remove the charred section and leave only a clean, short wooden edge.

Good to know

Wick behaviour always depends on the specific combination of wax, container diameter, amount of fragrance oil and dye. The same wick may burn steadily in one wax and weakly or too strongly in another. No universal chart can replace an actual burn test.

Before producing a larger batch, we recommend making a test candle and letting it burn for several hours. Check whether the wax melts all the way to the edge of the container, whether the flame is not too high, and whether the container does not overheat.

Further practical notes:

  • Tunnelling – if the wax only melts in the centre, the wick is too weak for the given container. A wider or thicker size will help.
  • High flame and smoke – the wick is too strong or too long. Try trimming first, then a smaller size.
  • First burn – the candle should burn until the entire surface has melted. Subsequent burns will then be more even.
  • Candle curing – the candle is tested only after several days from pouring, once the wax has stabilised.

Frequently asked questions

What container suits a wooden wick with a width of 19.1 mm?
A wooden wick with a width of 19.1 mm is among the wider sizes and is intended for containers with a larger inner diameter. The exact range depends on the wax and the amount of fragrance, so suitability is confirmed by a test burn. With the right choice, the wax surface melts all the way to the edge of the container and the flame remains steady.
What does the .04 designation on a wooden wick mean?
The designation .04 indicates the thickness of the wooden strip according to the manufacturer's coding. The higher the number, the thicker the strip and the stronger the wick. A thicker wick is chosen for denser waxes and candles with a higher proportion of fragrance or dye; a thinner one for more easily burning blends. Thickness is always assessed together with wick width.
Why does a wooden wick go out?
A wooden wick often goes out because it is too long or has a charred layer at the end. Trimming to a low height above the wax surface and removing the burnt edge helps. If the problem persists, the wick is too weak for the given wax and container, and a stronger size — meaning a wider or thicker strip — should be tried.
Is a stand included with the wooden wick?
Yes, the wooden wick is supplied complete with a round metal stand for flat wooden wicks. The stand holds the strip perpendicular to the base of the container, keeping the wick in an upright position. The same type of stand suits flat, double and cross wooden wicks, so it does not need to be purchased separately.
Does a wooden wick crackle when burning?
A wooden wick may crackle quietly when burning, but the intensity varies from candle to candle. It is influenced by the type of wax, the amount of fragrance oil, the dye and the wick length. Crackling cannot therefore be guaranteed in advance. How the wick behaves in a specific blend will only become clear after a test candle.
