Aloe Vera 200:1, Powder, Organic, 10 g

Aloe Vera 200:1 powder is dried and ground organic gel from the leaves of Aloe barbadensis, concentrated so that one part of powder corresponds to approximately two hundred parts of the original gel. In a formulation it acts as a humectant and active ingredient: it supports hydration of the skin and hair and, according to the manufacturer’s documentation, helps soothe irritated skin. It dissolves in water and is used at rates starting from just a few tenths of a percent, so in a formulation it replaces a large volume of aloe juice without adding any extra water.

During production the gel is rinsed to remove residues of aloin, then dried and ground into a powder. The raw material contains no preservatives or alcohol and is both food grade and cosmetic grade.

Use in formulations

The powder belongs in the water phase. In toners, mists and gels it dissolves directly in water or in a hydrosol. In emulsions it can be dissolved in the water phase, added in the cooling phase or incorporated afterwards as a concentrated solution into the finished product.

The recommended usage rate is 0.1–1%. At a 200:1 concentration, even 0.5% of powder roughly corresponds to the amount of aloe in the fresh gel itself, so a higher usage rate makes sense mainly in masks and more intensive products. A solution with a concentration of 0.5% has a pH of approximately 3.5–5.0; the final pH of the formulation is adjusted according to the other ingredients.

In very light and clear formulations, check the colour of the finished product on a test sample. Compatibility with common cosmetic raw materials is unrestricted; it is advisable to check the behaviour with a specific thickener and preservative in the finished formulation.

Good to know

The powder itself contains no preservative and is intended to be dissolved in water. Every finished product with a water phase to which it is added therefore needs a suitable preservative system, even when the product consists only of water and aloe.

In oils, butters and anhydrous balms the powder does not dissolve. It makes sense in such products only if they come into contact with water during use.

When working with a cosmetic formulation, it is recommended to have the usage rate in both percentages and grams to hand. In small batches the amounts are very small, and weighing them accurately requires a scale with a resolution of at least tenths of a gram.

200:1 powder compared with aloe gel

Aloe gel and aloe juice consist mostly of water, often also contain a preservative and take up a substantial part of the water phase in a formulation. The 200:1 powder brings the same plant ingredient in a concentrated form: it is used at a rate of tenths of a percent, the rest of the water phase remains free for hydrosols or other active ingredients, and you choose the preservative system yourself. The gel has the advantage where aloe is applied directly to the skin without further processing; the powder, in turn, is better in formulations where the exact amount of the active ingredient and control over the composition matter.
