Active ingredients – functional ingredients for effective cosmetics

The active ingredients category covers carefully chosen raw materials that give a cosmetic product a specific effect – hydration, exfoliation, an anti-age effect or a stronger skin barrier. They suit facial, body and hair care alike.

All products are of cosmetic grade and are supplied with full documentation – SDS, certificate and technical data sheet. Well-chosen active ingredients improve how a formulation performs without putting an unnecessary load on the skin.

Below you will find an overview of the main types of active ingredient grouped by effect, with direct links to the products available in this category.

Hydration and skin renewal

The key humectants for holding water in the skin and improving its elasticity. Hydration, softening and a smoother feel on the skin. Recommended products: Hyaluronic acid, Vegetable glycerine 99.5%, D-Panthenol 75% and Urea USP.

Exfoliation and an even skin tone (AHA/BHA)

Glycolic, lactic and salicylic acid support cell renewal, brighten the skin and help other actives penetrate. Gentle exfoliation at the recommended concentrations (1–5% on the face, product pH ≥ 3.5) and effective smoothing of the skin. After using AHA/BHA acids the skin is more sensitive to the sun, so keep up thorough daily sun protection. Handle concentrated acids with care – wear gloves and safety goggles. Available: Glycolic acid, Lactic acid and Salicylic acid.

Sebum regulation and care for oily skin

Zinc PCA helps regulate sebum production, improves the condition of blemish-prone skin and supports the balance of the hydrolipid barrier. An effective and well-tolerated answer for oily and blemish-prone skin. More about the product: Zinc PCA.

Anti-age and barrier protection

A combination of actives aimed at the suppleness and renewal of the skin – SKINMIMICS® ceramides, the Argireline® peptide, coenzyme Q10 and bakuchiol. A stronger barrier, improved elasticity and a smoother look to the skin. Recommended products: SKINMIMICS® ceramides, Argireline® peptide, Coenzyme Q10 and Bakuchiol.

Soothing and skin comfort

Allantoin and bisabolol ease irritation and redness and support the skin's renewal after exfoliation or UV exposure. Gentle care for sensitive skin, with an immediate soothing effect. Products: Allantoin and Bisabolol natural.

Vitamins and antioxidant components

Niacinamide (vitamin B3) helps even out the skin tone, while vitamin E protects against oxidative stress and supports renewal of the skin barrier. A strong pairing for everyday protection and radiance. Recommended products: Niacinamide and Vitamin E (tocopherol).

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose the right active ingredient?

Choose by the goal of the formulation – hydration (hyaluronic acid, panthenol), exfoliation (AHA/BHA acids), anti-age (bakuchiol, peptides, coenzyme Q10), sebum regulation (Zinc PCA, azeloglycine) or soothing (allantoin, bisabolol). Every product page states the recommended dosage and pH range, so you can work the ingredient safely into your formulation.

What is the recommended dosage of active ingredients?

Follow the page of the specific product: niacinamide is commonly dosed at 2–5%, bakuchiol at 0.5–2% and azeloglycine at 3–10%; Alpha Arbutin up to 2% in facial creams and up to 0.5% in body preparations (the limit set out in Annex III to Regulation 1223/2009 as amended by 2024/996). High-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid needs only 0.1–0.5%. Start at the lower end of the range – at higher concentrations very sensitive skin may react with mild irritation.

At which stage of production are active ingredients added?

Water-soluble actives (niacinamide, panthenol, allantoin) go into the water phase or the cooling phase below 40 °C. Oil-soluble actives such as bakuchiol, coenzyme Q10 or vitamin E belong in the fat phase or are stirred in after emulsification; in a hot process, add bakuchiol during cooling below 70 °C. Add heat-sensitive components at the very end so they keep their full potency.

Can several active ingredients be combined?

Yes, provided they are compatible in pH and solubility. Combine acids with humectants such as hyaluronic acid or panthenol, vitamins with antioxidants and peptides with ceramides for a broader effect. Sensitive actives such as coenzyme Q10 or panthenol should also be stored cool, in closed containers and away from direct light and heat.
