Product description

The Boston glass bottle with a volume of 250 ml, complete with a black pump, is a ready-to-use dispensing package for liquid and semi-liquid cosmetic products. Amber glass protects the contents from light, which makes it particularly suitable for formulations with oils, plant extracts or vitamins that lose quality faster in light. The pump with a dip tube allows hygienic dispensing without opening the bottle and without the fingers touching the contents, which is more practical than a cap for a larger bathroom package.

The set is filled with body and massage oils, body lotions and lighter creams, liquid soaps, facial cleansing gels, conditioners or serum emulsions with a consistency the pump can draw up. The 250 ml volume corresponds to a standard package for the shower or the sink. For your own production it is also a practical amount for testing a formulation in a larger volume.

Why choose this set

  • Light protection – amber glass dampens UV radiation and slows the oxidation of oils and sensitive ingredients. The contents stay stable longer than in clear glass or plastic.
  • Dispensing without opening – with each press the pump releases a measured dose of approximately 1.8 ml. No air or dirt from the hands gets into the bottle and the product is used up evenly.
  • Glass that does not interact with the contents – glass does not react with essential oils or alcohol-based ingredients. It is also suitable for formulations with a higher proportion of essential oils, which can damage plastic packaging over time.
  • Reusable – after thorough washing and disinfection the bottle and the pump can be used again, which reduces the amount of packaging waste in home production.
  • Boston bottle look – the classic shape with a rounded shoulder and the black pump with a ribbed collar look consistent on the shelf and in gift packaging.

Use in practice

The set is filled to the nominal volume, that is to the volume for which the bottle is intended under normal filling. The total volume to the brim is larger, but this difference is a reserve for the pump's dip tube, for air and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. If the bottle is filled all the way to the neck, part of the contents is pushed out when the pump is screwed on and runs down the neck, which makes labelling and the cleanliness of the package harder.

The pump draws the contents through a dip tube that should reach just above the bottom of the bottle. The tube is supplied longer than the height of the bottle, so before first use fit it, screw it on as a test and shorten it with a diagonal cut using a sharp knife so that it does not bend or kink. A kinked tube does not draw and the pump then „coughs“ or does not dispense at all.

Before the first filling, wash the bottle and the pump with warm water and a neutral detergent, rinse, spray or wipe them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let them dry completely. Residual water in the tube would dilute the first doses and in water-free oil products it could cause cloudiness.

The pump is intended for liquid to medium-thick contents. With thick creams or butters the dose decreases, the pump works harder and with a very thick consistency it stops drawing. If the formulation turns out thick, it helps to slightly reduce the proportion of thickener or to check whether the product flows at room temperature. Emulsions that thicken at the bottom over time should be shaken before use.

Closure and combinations

The bottle has a neck with the thread type stated in the parameters and another closure with the same neck type, for example a cap or a sprayer, also fits it. Ready-made combinations of the bottle with other closures can be found in the Handymade range. For your own combination we recommend checking the tightness and dispensing with the specific formulation, especially for contents with a higher proportion of alcohol or essential oils, which can stress the seal.

What is good to know

  • Contact with cosmetics – in this set the declaration of suitability for contact with cosmetic products applies to the pump. No such declaration is stated for the bottle within the set, so for sensitive formulations we recommend verifying compatibility with the specific formulation.
  • Not intended for food – the set as a whole is not approved for contact with food. It is therefore not suitable for table oils, syrups or herbal infusions for consumption.
  • Glass and heat – do not fill the bottle with a hot emulsion straight from the pot. A sudden change in temperature can crack the glass and the hot contents stress the pump's seal. Let the product cool at least to a lukewarm temperature.
  • Labelling – the cylindrical part of the Boston bottle is straight and a label sticks to it well. For shower products choose a water-resistant label.
  • Recycling – glass goes into the glass container, the polypropylene pump into plastics. Before disposal, take the set apart and remove the remaining contents from the pump.

A pump with a dip tube never empties the bottle completely; a small residue below the level of the tube remains at the bottom. Take this into account when pricing the product and when stating the declared quantity on the label.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Boston 250 ml glass bottle with a pump suitable for body oil?
Yes, body and massage oils are among the most common uses of this set. Amber glass slows the oxidation of oils and the pump dispenses the oil without you having to open and tilt the bottle. Glass does not react even with oils that have a higher proportion of essential oils. We recommend testing the pump on a single piece before a larger series.
How much product is filled into a 250 ml bottle?
The bottle is filled to the nominal volume of 250 ml, not to the brim. The volume to the neck is larger, but the difference forms a reserve for the pump's dip tube and for the expansion of the contents. If the bottle is overfilled, the contents are pushed out through the neck when the pump is screwed on and soil the thread.
Why does the pump on the bottle not draw or dispense irregularly?
The most common cause is a kinked or too long tube, or contents that are too thick. The tube should reach just above the bottom of the bottle and must not bend. If it is longer, shorten it with a diagonal cut. The pump will not draw up a thick cream. With a new pump, a few presses are also needed before the tube fills and the dose stabilizes.
Can the bottle with the pump be washed and reused?
Yes, the bottle and the pump can be washed and refilled after use. Glass withstands washing with warm water and disinfection with alcohol. Rinse the pump with clean water by pumping it through so that residues of the product are removed from the tube and the mechanism, and let it dry. When changing the formulation we recommend replacing the pump if it previously held a product with an intense fragrance or colorant.
Is the Boston bottle set with a pump approved for contact with food?
No, the set as a whole is not approved for contact with food. It is intended for cosmetic and technical use; the declaration of suitability for cosmetics applies to the pump. For food purposes, such as table oils or syrups, choose a package with a food-contact certificate for all of its parts.
Does amber glass protect the contents sufficiently from light?
Amber glass significantly limits the penetration of UV radiation and is the standard choice for oils, serums and extracts sensitive to light. It is not complete darkness, so for very sensitive ingredients, such as some vitamins, it helps to store the bottle out of direct sunlight. Compared with clear glass or transparent plastic, the difference in the stability of the contents is clear.
