Product description

A glass bottle, Boston vial with an aluminium cap, 250 ml is a ready-made combination of packaging and closure for larger volumes of liquid preparations. Amber glass reduces light transmission and protects contents sensitive to oxidation, such as vegetable oils, oleogels or tonics with active ingredients. A rose-gold aluminium cap closes the bottle flat and gives it a simple, clean appearance with no dispensing element. The contents are poured or decanted from the bottle into smaller containers.

A volume of 250 ml makes this set a practical choice for massage and body oils, shower oils, hydrolats, facial tonics, micellar waters, hair rinses or stock bottles for finished bases that are later decanted into smaller packaging. The Boston vial shape with rounded shoulders and a narrower neck facilitates controlled pouring.

Why choose this combination

  • Light protection – amber glass filters part of the light spectrum that accelerates the yellowing of oils and the loss of efficacy of certain active ingredients. For anhydrous oil-based products, it is one of the simplest ways to extend their stability.
  • Glass with no interaction with the contents – glass does not react with essential oils, solvents or alcohol-based extracts. It is therefore also suitable for tinctures and preparations with a higher proportion of ethanol, for which plastic may not be appropriate.
  • Flat aluminium cap with sealing insert – the closure is made of aluminium with an EPE (expanded polyethylene) insert that, once tightened, seats on the neck and provides a seal. Aluminium holds its shape and the metallic surface looks good even in gift packaging.
  • Ready-made set – the bottle and cap have been chosen to match each other. No need to search for a suitable closure by neck type.

Nominal and total volume

Nominal volume is the volume the bottle is designed for under normal filling conditions. Total volume to the brim is the physical volume up to the neck and is somewhat larger. The difference between them serves as a reserve for the closure and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. The bottle should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. The contents will then not be forced into the thread when the cap is tightened, and the seal will remain clean. The exact values of both volumes are listed in the product parameters.

What the set is suitable for

  • Oil-based preparations – massage, body and shower oils, oil serum in larger packaging, oil-based herbal extracts. Dark glass and a tight closure are a suitable combination for these.
  • Water-based and alcohol-based preparations – hydrolats, tonics, micellar waters, herbal tinctures and alcohol extracts. Glass does not absorb the scent or colour of the contents.
  • Stock and working bottles – finished oil blends, serum or hair rinse bases that are later decanted into smaller retail packaging.
  • Preparations dispensed by pouring – the flat cap has no dispenser. It is suitable where the contents are poured, measured or decanted, not for drop-by-drop dispensing.

If you want to dispense the contents directly from the bottle, droppers, pumps or spray caps can also be used with the same neck type. Closures with the same neck type and other ready-made combinations are available in the Handymade range. For a custom combination, we recommend verifying the seal integrity and the behaviour of the packaging with the specific formulation.

What is worth knowing

Before first filling, wash the bottle with warm water, or disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allow it to dry completely upside down. Residual water in an oil-based product can cause cloudiness or promote microbial growth. The cap only needs to be rinsed and dried; do not remove the sealing insert.

Glass and heat. The bottle can withstand filling with lukewarm contents, but not sudden temperature changes. Do not pour a hot mixture into a cold bottle, and do not put a filled bottle in the freezer. Allow warmer oil blends to cool to at least room temperature before closing, to prevent a vacuum forming inside and the insert being drawn in.

The aluminium cap should be tightened by hand, not by force. The seal is provided by the EPE insert, not by the tightening force. Over-tightening can damage the thread or deform the edge of the cap. For preparations with a higher proportion of essential oils or ethanol, check after a few days that the insert has not absorbed the contents and is still sealing.

Suitability for cosmetics. The aluminium cap carries a declaration of suitability for contact with cosmetic products. For the glass bottle, we recommend verifying suitability for the specific formulation in practice, particularly with more aggressive contents. The set as a whole is not intended for contact with food.

Labelling. The cylindrical body of the Boston vial has a flat surface suitable for a wraparound label. Label dimensions for design purposes can be found in the parameters. Amber glass will affect the colour perception of a transparent label, so we recommend printing a test piece.

Never fill the bottle to the brim. Both oil-based and alcohol-based contents expand when the temperature changes, and a full container can overflow or force contents into the thread when the cap is tightened.

Reuse and recycling. The glass bottle can be reused after thorough washing. Replace the cap if the insert is damaged or has absorbed contents. Glass goes into glass recycling, the aluminium cap into metal recycling.

Frequently asked questions

Does the amber glass Boston bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, amber glass filters part of the light spectrum and slows down the oxidation of the contents. For vegetable oils, oil-based herbal extracts and serums with antioxidants, this is meaningful protection, especially if the container stands on a shelf or in a bathroom. It does not, however, replace storage in a cool place away from direct sunlight. Dark glass extends stability but does not guarantee it.
Is the aluminium cap on the Boston 250 ml vial airtight?
Yes, when properly tightened it seals thanks to the expanded polyethylene insert, which seats on the neck of the bottle. The closure is designed for storage and transport, not for dispensing. For contents with a high proportion of essential oils or ethanol, we recommend checking the seal after a few days, as the insert may partially absorb the contents.
Can the Boston 250 ml bottle be filled with a tincture or an alcohol-based preparation?
Yes, glass is a suitable material for alcohol-based preparations, as it does not react with ethanol or with essential oils. With tinctures and alcohol-based extracts, monitor the behaviour of the sealing insert in the cap. If it absorbs the contents or softens, replace the closure with a new one.
How much can actually be filled into the Boston 250 ml bottle?
The bottle is designed for filling to the nominal volume of 250 ml. The physical volume to the brim is larger, but the difference is a reserve for the closure and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. The exact value of the total volume can be found in the product parameters. Filling all the way to the brim leads to overflow when closing and residue in the thread.
Is the Boston bottle with aluminium cap set suitable for food?
No, this set as a whole is not approved for contact with food. The aluminium cap carries a declaration of suitability for contact with cosmetic products. If you need packaging for home-made oils, syrups or herbal extracts, choose a bottle and closure from the Handymade range that have food contact approval listed in the parameters.
How do you clean the Boston bottle before reusing it?
Wash the bottle with warm water and washing-up liquid, rinse thoroughly and disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. Leave it to dry upside down so that no water remains inside. Remove oil residues with warm water and a small amount of washing-up liquid; for heavily stained contents, a short soak helps. Rinse the cap and dry it; do not remove the insert.
