Product description

The set consists of a brown glass bottle, Boston round with a nominal volume of 250 ml and a black low plastic cap with the same thread type. It is a ready-made pair that requires no assembly or fitting. The bottle and cap are matched and, once filled, simply screw on.

Brown glass limits light exposure to the contents, making the set ideal for fills that are sensitive to light: vegetable and massage oils, oil blends with essential oils, tinctures and alcohol extracts, hydrolates and facial tonics. The 250 ml volume corresponds to a larger home or artisan packaging, such as a body oil, an oil concentrate before dilution, or a hydrolate stock for decanting into smaller containers. The low cap gives the bottle a simple, closed appearance and suits contents that are poured rather than dispensed drop by drop.

What the set offers

  • Light protection – brown glass limits light penetration into the contents, slowing yellowing and loss of fragrance in oils and essential oil components.
  • Glass with no interaction with the contents – glass does not react with essential oils, alcohol, or most solvents that could soften or cloud a plastic container. It is therefore a safe choice for concentrated oil and alcohol fills.
  • Boston shape – a bottle with a round body and rounded shoulder that fits comfortably in the hand, stands stably, and provides a straight cylindrical surface for a label.
  • Low cap – a closure without protrusions that opens and closes easily and does not add to the bottle height. Suited for contents that are poured or decanted into another container.
  • Reuse – the glass bottle can be used again after thorough washing and drying. We recommend checking the cap and replacing it when changing the contents.

Nominal and total volume

Two volume values are stated for every container and it is worth not confusing them. The nominal volume is the quantity for which the bottle is designed under standard filling. The total volume to the brim is the physical volume up to the neck and is always larger. The difference between them is the allowance for the thread and cap, as well as room for the contents to expand with temperature changes — for example when oil filled in a cool room is moved to a warm one. Fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim. An overfilled bottle will overflow or push contents into the thread when the cap is screwed on.

When filling hot (for example, an oil macerate straight after straining), let the contents cool to at least room temperature before screwing on the cap. As warm contents cool they contract, a vacuum forms under the cap, and the closure then becomes difficult to open.

What the set is suitable for

The set is intended for cosmetic and artisan fills that are poured: body and massage oils, hair and beard oils, oil serums in larger sizes, stock bottles of hydrolates and tonics, alcohol tinctures and extracts, or liquid bases before further processing. It is also suitable for essential oil blends or perfume concentrates in an oil carrier.

Less suitable for fills that are dispensed drop by drop or sprayed. For those, use closures with a dropper or spray pump on the same neck type. Thick creams and butters are difficult to extract from the narrow neck of the Boston bottle; a jar or pot is a better choice there.

Good to know

Certifications in this set. A declaration of suitability for direct food contact and for contact with cosmetic products is available separately for the black cap. For the glass bottle, no such declaration is available, so the set as a whole is not listed as approved for food use, and suitability for cosmetics applies to the cap. The set is intended for cosmetic and artisan use. For food purposes, we recommend choosing packaging where all components carry a certificate.

Preparation before first use. We recommend washing both the new bottle and cap with warm water and a small amount of detergent, rinsing, disinfecting with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, and leaving them to dry completely upside down. Residual water in an oil fill is the most common cause of cloudiness and microbial spoilage.

Glass and heat. Do not expose the glass bottle to sudden temperature changes. Hot contents in a cold bottle, or cold water on heated glass, can cause cracking. Heat gradually, ideally in a water bath together with the contents.

Cap and seal. The plastic cap is hand-tightened without force. Over-tightening does not improve the seal and is more likely to damage the thread. For alcohol and essential oil fills, we recommend filling one bottle as a trial before a larger batch, placing it on its side, and checking the seal and condition of the cap with the specific formulation after a few days.

Labelling. The cylindrical part of the bottle is straight and smooth; labels adhere well to it. For oil fills, use grease-resistant labels, otherwise the print will smear on first contact with oil.

Other closures. The bottle accepts closures with the same neck type as stated in the specifications. Ready-made bottle and closure combinations are available in the Handymade range.

Recycling. After washing, the glass bottle goes into glass collection; the plastic cap is unscrewed and sorted separately as plastic.

Brown glass protects against light, not heat. Do not leave a bottle with an oil or essential oil fill on a sunny windowsill or near a heat source. Oxidation of the contents is accelerated mainly by heat and by air that enters the bottle each time it is opened.

Frequently asked questions

Does a brown glass Boston bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, brown glass significantly limits light penetration into the contents, making it suitable for vegetable oils, essential oils, tinctures and hydrolates that degrade in light. However, it is not a complete barrier and brown glass does not protect against heat or air. Store the bottle in a dark, cool place and always screw it on securely after use.
How much can actually be poured into a 250 ml Boston bottle?
The bottle is filled to the nominal volume of 250 ml, not to the brim. The total volume to the neck is larger; the difference serves as an allowance for the thread, cap and expansion of the contents with temperature changes. If the bottle is filled to the brim, the contents are pushed into the thread when the cap is screwed on and the cap will not seal properly.
Is the Boston bottle set with a black cap suitable for food?
No, the set as a whole is not listed as approved for food contact. A declaration of suitability for direct contact with food and cosmetics is available separately for the black cap; for the glass bottle, no such declaration is available. The set is intended for cosmetic and artisan fills. For food use, we recommend packaging where all components carry a certificate.
Can alcohol or essential oils be filled into the glass Boston bottle?
Yes, glass is resistant to alcohol, essential oils and common solvents and does not react with them, which is its main advantage over plastic bottles. Attention should be paid to the cap: plastic may change its properties with prolonged contact with concentrated essential oils or alcohol. For such fills, we recommend testing the seal and condition of the cap with the specific blend.
How is the glass Boston bottle cleaned and can it be reused?
Yes, the glass bottle can be reused after thorough washing. Wash it with warm water and detergent, leave a baking soda solution to act on any oil residues, rinse, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, and leave to dry completely. When changing the contents, it is better to replace the cap with a new one so that no scent or residue from the previous fill is transferred.
What other closures fit a Boston bottle with a 28 mm neck?
The bottle accepts all closures with the same neck type as stated in the specifications — besides the cap, for example a dropper, trigger sprayer or pump. Ready-made bottle and closure combinations are available in the Handymade range. With a custom assembly, it is necessary to verify the seal and dispensing with the specific fill, as the behaviour of the closure depends on the viscosity and composition of the contents.
