Product description
EcoSoya pillar blend soy wax is a vegetable wax made from soybean oil (Glycine max) designed for freestanding candles cast in moulds. Once cooled, it holds its shape without a container, making it suitable for casting pillar candles, votive candles and smaller shaped candles from moulds. The base has a neutral scent, so the added fragrance composition will come through after lighting without any underlying wax note.
The wax is manufactured to technical quality for candle making. It is not intended for cosmetic products, massage candles or skin contact. Under CLP regulation it is not classified as hazardous; the only risk to consider during handling is that of the hot molten mass.
Key properties
- Plant-based origin – a blend of hardened vegetable fats from soy, predominantly triglycerides, free from paraffin.
- Shape without a container – the pillar-type composition holds independently after cooling and the candle can be removed from the mould.
- Neutral scent – does not suppress or alter the character of the added fragrance oil.
- Melting point approximately 47 °C – the wax melts with gentle heating in a water bath, without high temperatures.
- No CLP classification – no safety data sheet is required for the wax.
Working with the wax
The wax is melted indirectly, in a water bath or in a melting pot with temperature control, never directly over a flame. It is heated slowly and only to the temperature needed for complete melting and incorporation of additives. Fragrance oil is added to the melted wax and stirred thoroughly to ensure even distribution throughout the volume. The proportion of fragrance oil is guided by the fragrance manufacturer's recommendation and verified on a test candle.
Wax-soluble dyes, liquid or in tablet form, are suitable for colouring. Water-based dyes and water-based aromas will not combine with the wax, as wax is insoluble in water. The wick is threaded through the hole in the base of the mould, sealed and centred before the wax is poured. The candle is removed from the mould only after it has cooled completely; premature removal will damage the surface and edges.
Molten wax can cause burns, and if overheated it releases irritating vapours. Check the temperature with a thermometer, heat indirectly and never leave the melting pot unattended.
Suitable for products such as
- pillar candles of cylindrical or square shape cast in moulds,
- votive candles and shaped candles (spheres, cones, figurines),
- decorative container-free candles that need to hold sharp edges.
For candles poured into jars and tins, container soy waxes are more suitable. Pillar-type wax is formulated to release from the mould wall; in a container it may pull away from the glass and leave a gap.
Good to know
The wax is soluble in vegetable oils and fats, so oil-based fragrance compositions blend in without difficulty. Every blend with fragrance and dye needs to be tested, as burning behaviour changes when the ratio is altered.
Verify the pouring temperature and its effect on surface appearance or cracks after cooling on a single candle before a larger batch. Wick size is chosen according to the candle diameter and fragrance load; only a burn test confirms the right choice: the flame should be steady, without excessive smoking and without running down the sides.
The wax is stable under normal processing conditions; it can only react with strong oxidising agents.
Before producing a batch, cast one test candle with the planned wick, fragrance and colour. Leave it to cure for at least a day, then allow it to burn for several hours. This verifies the burn, the fragrance intensity after lighting and the surface after cooling.
