Product description

Sugar cloud fragrance oil

Sugar cloud fragrance oil is a sweet, gourmand fragrance composition that gives products a soft, sugary vanilla aroma reminiscent of candyfloss. It is used purely for fragrancing – it is added to the formulation as a fragrance component that completes the final character of the product. It is a cosmetic grade composition of European origin, suitable for a wide range of rinse-off and leave-on products.

Key features

  • Sweet gourmand profile – a warm, sugary fragrance for products with a playful or cosy character.
  • Oil- and alcohol-soluble – it blends easily into oil phases and alcohol-based products; it does not dissolve in water.
  • Wide range of uses – suitable for body and hair care, soaps, diffusers and aromatherapy.
  • Proven behaviour in cold process soap – it does not accelerate trace and discolours the soap only slightly.

Use in formulations

Sugar cloud is added at the end of production, during the cooling phase, or as a later addition once the mixture has cooled. The recommended processing temperature is up to 40 °C – a higher temperature may weaken the fragrance or change its profile. Because the ingredient is soluble in oil and alcohol but insoluble in water, in water-based and emulsion systems it must be bound through the oil phase or with a suitable solubiliser, otherwise it will not mix evenly in the product.

In cold process soap, it proved itself in a soap maker’s practical test: it does not accelerate trace, so once it is stirred in, there is enough time to work with the mixture and pour it into moulds. It discolours the mixture only slightly – after about 15 minutes the soap mixture turned slightly yellow, which should be taken into account for light or colour-matched recipes.

Also suitable for lip balms. The fragrance is permitted in IFRA category 1, which covers lip products. Base the usage rate in a lip balm on the limit for this category, which you will find in the IFRA certificate in the Product documentation section. A small amount is enough for lips, so start with a low dose.

Suitable for products such as

  • Body cosmetics – body lotions, creams, oils and butters, where the fragrance binds to the oil phase.
  • Lip balms – the fragrance is permitted in IFRA category 1 (lip products); stir it into the melted oil and wax mixture just before pouring.
  • Rinse-off products – solid and liquid soaps, shower gels and shampoos.
  • Alcohol-based products – body sprays and delicate fragrances, where you can make use of its alcohol solubility.
  • Diffusers and aromatherapy – fragrance blends for room use without direct contact with the skin.

You can find other fragrances that can also be used in lip products in the category Fragrance oils suitable for lip balms.

Good to know when formulating

This is a fragrance composition classified under CLP that contains hazardous substances and one or more fragrance allergens listed in Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. This has a direct impact on the labelling of the finished product and on the maximum usage rate, which is governed by the IFRA category according to the type and place of application of the product. Before adding it to a formulation, therefore, check the limit for the given category in the IFRA certificate in the Product documentation section.

Fragrance oils are used in small amounts; the exact percentage depends on the type of product and on the IFRA limit. A higher usage rate does not automatically mean a better result – an excessive amount can push the sweetness into an unpleasant range and, in some systems, affect the colour.

The ingredient is classified under CLP (pictograms GHS07 and GHS09) and contains fragrance allergens. When working with it, follow the instructions in the safety data sheet, use it according to the IFRA category for the given type of product, and take the allergens into account when labelling the finished product.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sugar cloud fragrance oil soluble in water?
No, Sugar cloud fragrance oil is not soluble in water. It dissolves in oil and in alcohol, so in water-based and emulsion products it is incorporated through the oil phase or with a solubiliser. Without this, it would not mix evenly in the product and could separate.
How do I add Sugar cloud to a cream?
Sugar cloud is added to a cream only in the cooling phase, once the emulsion has dropped below 40 °C. The fragrance binds to the oil component, so it is gently stirred into the cooled mixture. It is used in a small amount according to the IFRA limit for the given type of product.
Is Sugar cloud fragrance oil suitable for cold process soap?
Yes, according to a soap maker’s practical test it is suitable for the cold process. It does not accelerate trace, so there is enough time to work with the mixture. After it is added, the mixture turns slightly yellow (after about 15 minutes), which should be taken into account for lighter recipes.
Why must Sugar cloud fragrance oil be used according to IFRA?
Because it is a fragrance composition classified under CLP that contains fragrance allergens. The maximum safe usage rate differs by IFRA category, that is, by the type of product and the place of application. You will find the limit for a specific category in the IFRA certificate in the Product documentation section, and it should be checked before adding the oil to a formulation.
Can I use Sugar cloud fragrance oil in a lip balm?
Yes. The fragrance is permitted in IFRA category 1, which covers lip balms and other lip products. The maximum amount in the finished balm is determined by the limit for this category, which you will find in the IFRA certificate in the Product documentation section. For an anhydrous balm, stir the fragrance oil into the melted oil and wax mixture just before pouring, once the mixture has cooled slightly.
Can Sugar cloud be used in alcohol-based body sprays?
Yes, thanks to its alcohol solubility it is suitable for body sprays and delicate alcohol-based fragrances. It dissolves in the alcohol component without the need for an additional solubiliser. Here too, the usage rate is governed by the relevant IFRA category for the given type of product.
