Product description

A brown glass apothecary bottle with a volume of 500 ml and a PP28S screw neck is designed for products that require light protection. Amber glass reduces light transmission and slows down changes in oxidation-sensitive contents. It is suitable for vegetable oils, oleogels, tonics, tinctures and hydrolats, and in combination with a pump also for liquid soaps and shampoos. The larger volume is convenient for home production as well as small batch runs.

The bottle is suitable for cosmetics and food. The packaging is approved for direct food contact, so it can also be used for home-made oils, syrups, vinegars or herbal extracts. The declaration of conformity is available with the product.

Why choose amber glass

  • Light protection – amber glass absorbs a large portion of visible and UV radiation. It is well suited for oils, essential oils in a carrier, tinctures and products containing antioxidants or vitamins that quickly lose stability when exposed to light.
  • Chemical resistance – glass does not react with oils, alcohol or acidic solutions and does not leach plasticisers into the contents. It is also suitable for alcohol-based and solvent-based preparations where some plastics might soften or become cloudy.
  • Reusable – once empty, the bottle can be washed, disinfected and refilled. Glass does not absorb the scent or colour of previous contents.
  • Easy recycling – once the cap is removed, the bottle goes into the coloured glass collection.

Filling and bottle volume

Nominal volume is the volume the packaging is designed for under normal filling conditions. Total brim-full volume is the physical capacity up to the neck. The difference between the two provides clearance for a cap, pump or dropper and allows for expansion of the contents with temperature changes. The bottle should be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. Otherwise the contents will be forced out during closing or will get under the seal, which will then fail to close properly.

Fill oils and oil macerates once they have cooled to room temperature. Warm contents contract as they cool, creating a vacuum inside the bottle; with a larger volume, the cap becomes noticeably harder to open.

Cap and neck

The PP28S screw neck is a common standard for larger-volume bottles. Closures with the same neck type — caps, pumps or trigger sprayers — as well as ready-made bottle-and-cap combinations are available in the Handymade range. With a custom combination, we recommend verifying seal integrity and dosing with the specific formulation, particularly with thicker oils or alcohol-containing products.

What to know before the first fill

Before first use, wash the bottle, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave it to dry completely, neck down. Residual water in an anhydrous product without preservation can cause cloudiness or promote the growth of micro-organisms.

Glass does not tolerate sudden temperature changes. Do not place a hot bottle in cold water or vice versa, and do not fill it with boiling contents. For products that solidify or freeze, allow for expansion and never fill above the nominal volume.

With a 500 ml volume, also account for the weight of the full packaging. For shipping, use an outer box with filler material and keep the bottles separated so they do not touch each other. The cylindrical apothecary shape with a straight wall makes labelling straightforward.

Amber glass protects contents from light, not from heat. Products containing essential oils, unsaturated oils or vitamins should be stored away from direct sunlight and heat sources, even in this bottle.

Suitable for products such as

  • Vegetable oils and macerates – the larger volume is practical for massage and bath oils as well as bulk storage of oils for further processing.
  • Hydrolats, tonics and facial waters – water-based products with a preservative, where dark glass slows down the breakdown of aromatic components.
  • Tinctures and alcohol extracts – alcohol does not leach anything from glass and the contents do not pick up foreign odours.
  • Liquid soaps, shampoos and shower gels – with a pump as a dispensing unit for the bathroom.
  • Food products – home-made flavoured oils, vinegars, syrups and extracts.

Frequently asked questions

Does an amber glass bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, amber glass absorbs a significant portion of UV and visible radiation and slows the photodegradation of the contents. It is therefore more suitable than clear glass for oils, essential oils, tinctures and products containing antioxidants. It does not provide complete protection, however — the bottle should still be stored away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
Why should a 500 ml glass bottle not be filled to the brim?
The bottle is filled to the nominal volume because the headspace above it provides clearance for a cap, pump or dropper and allows for expansion of the contents with temperature changes. If filled to the brim, the contents are forced out during closing or get under the thread and the cap fails to seal. Both volume values are listed in the product specifications.
Is the PP28S glass apothecary bottle suitable for alcohol-based and oil-based contents?
Yes, glass is chemically inert and suitable for alcohol-based, oil-based and water-based products. Neither alcohol nor oil leaches anything from it and the contents do not pick up foreign odours. With alcohol-based preparations, pay attention only to the choice of cap to ensure the alcohol does not damage its seal.
Can the 500 ml glass bottle be reused?
Yes, once empty, wash it, disinfect it with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol and refill. Glass does not absorb the scent or colour of previous contents. Before refilling, let it dry completely and check the neck for any chips that could compromise the seal.
What closure fits a bottle with a PP28S neck thread?
Any closure with the same PP28S neck type fits the bottle — caps, pumps or trigger sprayers. The current range of closures and ready-made bottle-and-cap combinations is available in the Handymade range. With a custom combination, we recommend verifying seal integrity and dosing with the specific formulation.
Can the 500 ml glass bottle be used for food?
Yes, the packaging is certified for direct food contact under normal conditions of use. It is suitable for home-made flavoured oils, vinegars, syrups and herbal extracts. The same rule applies as for cosmetics: wash and disinfect the bottle before filling, and fill only to the nominal volume.
