Product description

A brown glass bottle with a capacity of 50 ml is a small container for cosmetic preparations that require protection from light. Brown glass reduces the penetration of daylight and UV radiation, making it suitable for oils, serums, tinctures, and essential oil blends that would deteriorate more quickly in a clear container. Glass does not react with the contents and releases no substances into them, making it suitable for alcohol-based extracts and concentrated active ingredients.

The bottle has a PP28S neck, which accepts closures with the same neck type – a cap, dropper, or pump depending on how the contents are to be dispensed. The container has certification for direct contact with food as well as cosmetic products, making it suitable for homemade oils, syrups, and herbal extracts.

What the bottle is suitable for

  • Facial and hair oils – dark glass slows the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids, which are sensitive to light.
  • Serums and concentrates – the smaller volume is used up before sensitive active ingredients have a chance to degrade.
  • Tinctures and alcohol-based extracts – glass resists ethanol even over extended periods and does not affect the taste or scent of the contents.
  • Essential oil blends – concentrated aromatic substances that can etch or stain plastic are safe in glass.
  • Homemade food products – flavoured oils, syrups, or herbal extracts in small quantities for personal use or as a gift.

Nominal and total volume

Each container is listed with two volumes. The nominal volume is the amount the bottle is designed to hold under normal filling – in this case 50 ml. The total brim-full volume is the physical volume up to the neck and is slightly larger. The difference between them provides clearance for the closure, dropper, or pump tube and for the expansion of the contents with changes in temperature. The bottle should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. An overfilled bottle will overflow when a dropper is inserted and may press against the closure when warmed.

When filling oils and serums that are dispensed by dropper, leave a slightly larger gap below the neck. The glass tube of the dropper will displace some of the contents upward, and in a full bottle the oil will enter the thread, where it then sticks and makes opening difficult.

What is good to know

Preparation before first filling. New bottles are clean but not sterile. Before filling with a cosmetic preparation, we recommend washing them with warm water and detergent, rinsing thoroughly, and disinfecting the inside with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. They should then be left to dry completely, neck down. Residual water in an oil-based or anhydrous preparation is the most common cause of cloudiness and premature spoilage.

Reuse. Glass can be washed and reused without any loss of properties. When changing the contents, it is advisable to disinfect the bottle again. Residues of essential oils are harder to remove from glass; rinsing with alcohol before washing helps.

Glass and heat. The bottle can withstand filling with warmer contents, but not a sudden change in temperature. Do not pour a hot emulsion or melted balm into a cold bottle. Warm the container first, or let the contents cool to a pourable temperature.

Labelling. The cylindrical shape with a smooth wall labels well. Dimensions suitable for a label are listed in the product parameters. Apply the label to dry, degreased glass; otherwise it will peel at the edges.

Choosing a closure. Closures with a PP28S neck and ready-made container + closure combinations are available in the Handymade range. With a custom combination, we recommend checking the seal, dispensing behaviour, and compatibility of the container with the specific formulation – for example, how well a thick serum is drawn up into the dropper or whether the pump handles a more viscous oil.

Brown glass slows the effect of light, but does not replace an antioxidant in the formulation or proper storage. Protect oxidation-sensitive contents through the composition of the recipe as well, and do not store the bottle in direct sunlight or near a heat source.

Recycling. The bottle is made of coloured glass and, once empty, belongs in glass recycling. The closure is sorted separately according to its material.

Frequently asked questions

Does a brown glass bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, brown glass significantly reduces the penetration of visible light and UV radiation, which accelerate the oxidation of oils and the breakdown of sensitive active ingredients. The protection is not complete, so store the bottle away from direct sunlight. For preparations where seeing the colour of the contents is important, clear glass is more appropriate.
Is the 50 ml glass bottle suitable for essential oils and alcohol-based tinctures?
Yes, glass is one of the few materials that concentrated essential oils and ethanol do not affect. It releases no substances into the contents, does not swell, and does not alter the scent. The closure matters too, however – with essential oils and alcohol-based extracts, check that the cap seal or dropper gasket is resistant to the specific contents.
How much will actually fit in a 50 ml bottle?
The bottle is filled to the nominal volume of 50 ml, although it has a physically larger volume up to the brim. The clearance below the neck is needed for fitting the closure, the dropper tube or pump, and for expansion of the contents with changes in temperature. The exact total brim-full volume can be found in the product parameters.
Can the brown bottle also be used for food?
Yes, the container has certification for direct contact with food under normal conditions of use. It is suitable for homemade herbal oils, syrups, vinegar extracts, or tinctures from medicinal plants. For food use, washing and drying is sufficient. Disinfection with alcohol is recommended here as well, particularly for contents without a preservative.
What closure fits a bottle with a PP28S neck?
The bottle accepts all closures with a PP28S neck type – a screw cap, dropper, or pump. Closures with a different neck type do not fit this bottle. Closures with the same neck and ready-made sets are available in the Handymade range. With a custom combination, check the seal with the specific contents.
How do you prepare a glass bottle before the first fill?
Wash it with warm water and detergent, rinse thoroughly, and disinfect the inside with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. Then leave it to dry completely, neck down, until no moisture remains. Residual water in an oil-based or anhydrous preparation causes cloudiness and can trigger microbial growth.
