Product description

A wooden wick with a sustainer is designed for making container candles where the flame is meant to produce not only light but also a soft crackling sound reminiscent of a fireplace. The set consists of a doubled wooden wick and a metal sustainer that holds it perpendicular to the bottom of the container.

The wick consists of two bonded wooden sheets. According to the manufacturer, the wood comes from certified sources and the wick is natural, allergen-free, and biodegradable.

Use in candle making

Slide the wick into the slot of the sustainer and secure the sustainer to the centre of the container bottom — use a wick sticker or a drop of melted wax. Pour the wax slowly to keep the wick from shifting. Wooden wicks hold their shape on their own, so centring with a wick bar during cooling is usually not necessary.

Once the wax has set, trim the wick just above the surface. Wire cutters or sturdy scissors work well. A wick that is too long burns with a high flame and produces soot; one that is too short may drown in the melted wax pool.

Before making a larger batch, we recommend pouring a test candle in the specific container with the specific wax and fragrance. Only a burn test will confirm the right wick size: the wax should melt across the full surface to the edges of the container.

Good to know

Wick width determines what container diameter the flame can melt. If wax remains unmelted near the container walls during a test burn, try a wider wick. If the flame is too high and the container overheats, a narrower or thinner wick is more suitable.

Burning behaviour is also affected by the candle composition — the type of wax, the proportion of fragrance oil, and dyes. Whenever a formulation changes, it is worth repeating the burn test.

Before each re-lighting, remove any charred residue from the wick and trim it. An untrimmed wooden wick is difficult to light and the flame tends to go out quickly.

Wood is a natural material, so individual wicks may vary slightly in grain and colour.
