A wooden wick with a metal sustainer tab is designed for container candles. It belongs to the series of crackling wicks made from a single ply, which produce a quiet crackling sound during burning reminiscent of a fireplace. The set includes both the wick and the sustainer tab, which holds it perpendicular to the bottom of the container, so it can be placed without any additional tools.
The wick is made from wood sourced from certified sources. The manufacturer describes it as a natural, allergen-free, and biodegradable material.
What makes a wooden wick interesting
- Sound during burning – crackling is a characteristic of this wick series. Its intensity depends on the wax, the amount of fragrance and dye, so it will not be the same with every formula.
- Single ply – the wick consists of one strip of wood. The designation .03 indicates the ply thickness; a higher number in the series means a thicker ply.
- Flat shape – the wick burns across its full width, so the width is chosen according to the diameter of the container.
- Sustainer tab included – the metal tab keeps the wick in a vertical position during both pouring and wax setting.
How to set the wick in a candle
The wick is inserted into the slot of the sustainer tab and the tab is secured to the centre of the container base, for example with an adhesive dot or a drop of melted wax. A wooden wick is rigid and holds its shape during pouring. With taller containers it is worth checking that it remains centred while the wax sets.
The length is adjusted to the height of the container. The wick can be trimmed with scissors or wick clippers, ideally only after the wax has fully set.
Before the first lighting, the wick is trimmed just above the wax surface. A wooden wick that is too long burns with a high flame and produces smoke; one that is too short will drown in the melted wax.
Choosing width and wax
The wick width determines how wide a melt pool forms. The right size depends on the diameter of the container, the type of wax, and the amount of fragrance oil and dye, so it cannot be defined by a single number for all candles.
Every combination of container, wax, fragrance and wick needs to be verified with a test burn. Check whether the melt pool reaches the edge of the container, whether the flame produces smoke, and whether the container overheats.
Good to know
- On the first burn, the candle should burn until the entire surface has melted. If extinguished earlier, the wax will tunnel on subsequent burns and the wick may go out.
- Before each subsequent lighting, the charred tip of the wick is removed. Simply break it off with your fingers or trim it on a cooled candle.
- When lighting, hold the flame against the wick long enough for it to ignite across its full width.
- A weak flame is usually a sign of a wick that is too narrow, a high fragrance or dye load, or a charred end that has not been removed.
