Product description

Wooden Wick Booster crackling 9.5 mm short with stand is designed for making container candles where the flame should produce, in addition to light, a gentle crackling sound reminiscent of a fireplace. It is a flat wick made from certified wood with a reinforcing layer. The kit includes a metal stand that holds the wick perpendicular to the bottom of the container, so it can be placed immediately.

The short version is especially suitable for shorter glasses, jars and tins, where a longer wick would need to be trimmed significantly.

What makes this wick interesting

  • Crackling when burning – the sound is produced by the burning wood. Its intensity depends on the wax, the amount of fragrance, and how the wick is trimmed.
  • Reinforcing layer – this wick belongs to the Booster series, in which the lamella is complemented by a reinforcing layer.
  • Wood from certified sources – the manufacturer states that the wick is natural, allergen-free and biodegradable.
  • Stand included – a round metal base for flat wooden wicks holds the wick in an upright position; it does not need to be purchased separately.

Use in candle making

The wick is inserted into the slot of the stand and the stand is attached to the centre of the container bottom, for example with an adhesive dot or a drop of melted wax. The wooden wick holds its shape on its own, so it does not need to be centred or stretched during pouring, as a cotton wick would.

Wick width is chosen based on the container diameter and wax type. Plant-based waxes (soy, rapeseed, coconut) behave differently from paraffin, and the fragrance oil content and colorant also affect the burn.

Before making a larger batch, we recommend making a test candle with the same wax, fragrance and container. During burning, observe whether the wax melts all the way to the container edge, whether the flame produces soot, and whether it is too high.

Good to know

  • Trimming – before the first light, the wick is trimmed short above the wax surface. A wick that is too long burns with a high flame and produces soot; one that is too short may drown in the wax.
  • Maintenance between burns – the charred tip is gently broken off or trimmed before the next light. Fresh wood burns, not the charred remnant.
  • First burn – it is advisable to let the candle burn until the wax surface melts all the way to the container edge. This prevents tunnelling around the wick.

If the flame repeatedly goes out, the wick is usually too short or submerged in wax. It helps to pour off or wick away a little of the melted wax and relight the wick.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the Booster wooden wick crackle when burning?
The crackling comes from the burning of the wood itself, from which the Booster wick is made. The volume is not the same for every candle: it is affected by the wax type, the amount of fragrance oil, and the wick length above the surface. Before making a larger batch, it is therefore worth making a test candle with the same wax, fragrance and container to check the sound.
What candles is the short 9.5 mm wooden wick suitable for?
The short wooden wick is designed for candles in shorter containers, such as glasses, jars and tins. Suitability for a specific container diameter depends on the wax used and the fragrance content, so it is verified by a test burn. For tall containers, the longer wick variant is more practical, as it does not need to be extended or significantly trimmed.
How is the wooden wick attached to the container?
The wooden wick is inserted into the metal stand included in the kit, and the stand is glued to the centre of the container bottom. An adhesive dot or a drop of melted wax is used. The container should be dry and clean so the stand holds properly. The wick stands upright on its own, so it does not need to be held in place with a clip during wax pouring.
What does the .04 designation on the Booster wooden wick mean?
The .04 designation indicates the lamella thickness of the wooden wick according to the manufacturer's numbering. A higher number means a thicker lamella. When choosing a wick, the thickness is assessed alongside the width, container diameter and wax type. Whether a given combination works in a candle can only be confirmed by a test burn with the same wax and fragrance.
Why does the wooden wick in a candle go out?
A wooden wick most commonly goes out because it is too short, submerged in wax, or has a charred remnant from the previous burn on it. It helps to gently break off or trim the charred tip, pour off or wick away a little of the melted wax, and relight the wick. If it keeps going out, the combination of wax, fragrance and container should be verified with a test burn.
