Product description

Amber glass bottle, square, straight, black safety cap, 10 ml

Ready-made set for dispensing liquids drop by drop: amber glass medicine bottle with a plastic dropper insert and a black safety cap. Amber glass dampens light, so it suits contents that lose potency or scent in light: essential oils, diffuser blends, oil serums, facial oils, tinctures and alcohol extracts. The 10 ml volume is enough for a sample, a travel pack or a small batch of a pricier raw material that you do not want to keep opened for long in a larger bottle.

The square, straight shape sits stably on a shelf and in a gift box, and lines up well in a row when handing out samples. The whole set is declared suitable for contact with cosmetics.

How the set works

  • Bottle – amber glass with an 18/410 neck, a common medicine bottle size, for which a different closure with the same neck type can be bought later.
  • Dropper insert – a short clear polypropylene insert that is pressed into the neck after filling. The contents then come out drop by drop, without pouring and without fingers touching the neck.
  • Safety cap – a smooth black screw cap that closes the set.

The dropper insert works with contents of thin consistency. Thick oils, balms or serums thickened with a gelling ingredient flow slowly or not at all through the short dropper insert.

Fit the dropper insert into the neck only after filling the bottle. Filling through a fitted dropper insert is slow, and with a thicker liquid an air bubble forms in the neck. After filling, press the insert in straight and tighten the cap.

Filling and volume

The nominal volume of 10 ml is the amount the bottle is designed for in normal filling. The physical space up to the neck is larger. The difference is a reserve for the dropper insert, which takes up part of the neck once pressed in, and for expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. Fill the bottle up to the nominal volume, not to the brim. If you fill it higher, the insert pushes the contents out when inserted, and a soiled neck then seals less well.

Good to know

Before the first filling, wash the bottle and the closure, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let them dry completely. Residual water would separate as droplets at the bottom with oil contents and would dilute the preservative in a water-based product.

The glass and the dropper insert can be reused after thorough washing. However, the dropper insert is a small part with crevices where oil and scent residues remain. When you change the essential oil blend, replace it with a new one, otherwise the scents will mix.

The dropper insert and the cap are made of plastic, which is in direct contact with the contents. With undiluted essential oils, citrus oils and products with a high proportion of solvents, we recommend verifying the behaviour of the dropper insert with your specific formulation. Leave the filled bottle to stand for several weeks and check that the insert does not soften and that the closure still seals.

Glass does not tolerate sudden temperature changes. Do not pour a hot phase into a cold medicine bottle and do not sterilise the bottles in an oven.

Only the glass bottle on its own has a certificate for direct contact with food. The dropper insert and the cap do not have one, so the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics. Do not use the set for homemade oils, syrups or herbal extracts intended for consumption.

When you finish using it, the dropper insert and the cap separate easily from the bottle: glass goes with glass and the plastic parts with plastics.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 10 ml amber glass bottle protect essential oils from light?
Yes, amber glass dampens light and slows the changes that daylight causes in essential oils and oil serums. However, it does not provide complete protection. Store a bottle with sensitive contents in a cabinet or a box, not on a windowsill or a bathroom shelf where the sun shines on it. The same applies to vegetable oils prone to yellowing.
Can a thick serum or balm be dispensed through the short plastic dropper insert?
No, the short dropper insert is intended for thin liquids. Essential oils, light vegetable oils, tinctures and aqueous solutions flow through it smoothly, drop by drop. Thick oils, gel serums or oil blends with wax flow slowly or stay in the neck. For such contents, a bottle with a glass dropper or a jar with a straight neck is more suitable.
Is the glass bottle set with a safety cap suitable for food?
No, the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics. Only the glass bottle itself has a certificate for direct contact with food. The plastic dropper insert and the safety cap do not have this certificate, and both are in contact with the contents. For oil extracts or syrups intended for consumption, choose a bottle with a closure whose food suitability is stated in the parameters.
How do you clean a 10 ml glass medicine bottle before reuse?
Wash the bottle with warm water and washing-up liquid, rinse it well, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let it dry completely, neck down. For oil residues, first rinse with alcohol. The dropper insert and the cap can be washed in the same way, but when you change the scent or the type of contents, it is better to replace the dropper insert with a new one, because residues remain in the narrow channel.
What other closure fits this glass bottle?
The bottle takes closures with an 18/410 neck finish, i.e. the same thread type as stated in the parameters. You can find ready-made combinations of the bottle with various closures in the Handymade range. When assembling your own set, always check that the closure seals with your specific contents and that the dispensing suits the consistency of the product, especially with oils and alcohol extracts.
