Product description
A small brown glass vial with a capacity of 5 ml, a plastic dropper insert fitted in the neck and a black screw cap with a tamper-evident ring – a ready-made set for essential oils, fragrance compositions and serum samples. All three parts share the same neck finish, so the packaging does not need to be assembled from individual components and is ready to use or hand to a customer as soon as it is filled.
Brown glass blocks light and protects contents that are sensitive to light and oxidation. This makes the vial particularly suitable for essential oils, fragrance compositions, concentrated actives and oil serums. The 5 ml volume corresponds to an amount that is used up quickly: samples and testers, travel-size packaging, small gift sets, or small batches of custom blends where you do not want to open a large bottle.
The set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products; the declaration of conformity is available on the product page. This set is not intended for contact with food.
How the set works
- Vial – a small brown glass bottle that stands stably even at a small volume and is easy to hold between the fingers when dispensing.
- Dropper insert – a transparent plastic insert fitted in the neck of the vial. It narrows the opening to a thin channel so that the contents flow out drop by drop when the vial is inverted or gently tilted. This is not a closure with a glass tube and rubber bulb; dispensing is done directly from the neck.
- Tamper-evident cap – a smooth black screw cap that threads over the dropper insert and seals the packaging. The tamper-evident ring separates when the cap is first unscrewed, making it immediately visible whether the vial has been opened. Once the ring has detached, the cap functions as a standard screw closure.
At the same angle of tilt the dropper delivers fairly consistent drops, which makes it easier to dose essential oils into blends, diffusers, or soap and cream bases without measuring. Thicker oils and serums drip more slowly; thin alcohol-based solutions drip faster. The rate therefore depends on the viscosity of the contents.
The dropper works best with thin to medium-viscosity liquids. Thick serums with a gel consistency or balms pass through the narrow channel with difficulty. For such contents a vial without a dropper is more suitable.
Suitable applications
- Essential oils and fragrance compositions – brown glass protects against light, the dropper allows drop-by-drop dispensing, and the tamper-evident cap confirms the integrity of the packaging.
- Samples and testers – the small volume lets customers try a serum, facial oil or fragrance blend without purchasing a full-size product.
- Concentrated actives – oil concentrates, vitamin blends or boosters added to a cream drop by drop.
- Travel and gift packaging – the sturdy little bottle with its screw cap can withstand being carried in a bag and wrapped into a set.
The set is suitable for oil-based, alcohol-based and water-based contents. With water-based products (tonics, hydrolats) keep in mind that the contents are dispensed drop by drop rather than sprayed, and a water-based product requires its own preservation just as it would in any other packaging.
Nominal and total volume
For every container we distinguish between the nominal volume and the total brim-full volume. The nominal volume is the quantity the vial is designed for under normal filling conditions. The total brim-full volume is the physical capacity up to the neck and is slightly larger. The difference provides a margin for the dropper insert, which occupies part of the space once seated in the neck, and for the expansion of the contents with changes in temperature. Fill the vial to the nominal volume. Filling to the brim means that when the dropper is pressed in, the contents will be forced out and the cap will not seal properly. The exact values of both volumes are given in the product specifications.
Insert the dropper into the neck only after filling and before screwing on the cap. Press it in evenly around the entire circumference until it sits flush with the rim of the neck. Otherwise the cap will not seat properly and the packaging may leak when inverted.
What to know before filling
Preparing the packaging. Before first use we recommend washing both the vial and the dropper insert, disinfecting them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allowing them to dry completely. Residual water in the vial will spoil an anhydrous oil-based content and increases the risk of microbial growth in a water-based product.
Filling. With a 5 ml volume and a narrow neck, filling is easiest with a small measuring cup, a syringe or a funnel with a narrow spout. Allow hot contents to cool to at least lukewarm temperature before filling. Glass does not tolerate sudden temperature differences, and the plastic dropper insert should only be placed into a vial that has reached ambient temperature.
Plastic and concentrated substances. The dropper insert is made from polypropylene, which is resistant to most cosmetic oils. With pure essential oils that have a high citrus fraction, strong solvents and concentrated fragrance compositions, we recommend testing the behaviour of the dropper insert with the specific content. With prolonged contact the plastic may soften or become discoloured. The glass itself is inert to these substances.
Reuse. The vial can be washed, disinfected and refilled. The dropper insert can be pried out of the neck, but its fit loosens after repeated removal. When refilling for a customer, we recommend replacing both the dropper insert and the cap with new ones.
Labelling. The label area on a 5 ml vial is small and curved; a narrow label or a neck hang-tag works best. Dimensions are given in the product specifications. The black cap provides good contrast with a white or cream label.
Recycling. Glass goes into glass waste; the dropper insert and cap are plastic. Separate them from the vial before disposal.
If you want to mix and match components, closures with the same neck finish and ready-made combinations are available in the Handymade range. When assembling your own combination, we recommend verifying the seal, dispensing behaviour and compatibility of the packaging with your specific formulation.
