Product description

Lime essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the peel gives the product a fresh citrus fragrance and serves in a formulation as both a fragrance and an active ingredient. It is suitable for facial and body cosmetics, hand and nail care products, bath and shower products, and aromatherapy blends. The raw material is of cosmetic and food grade, is certified COSMOS Approved and Kosher, and according to the manufacturer it is vegan and not tested on animals.

The usage rate depends on the IFRA category for the specific type of product, and the oil is never applied to the skin undiluted.

Fragrance and character

The fragrance is typically lime-like, fresh and citrusy. The manufacturer describes it as bright and invigorating and recommends the oil for perfumes, fragrance compositions, aromatherapy blends, diffusers, massage oils and bath products. In blends with other essential oils, it adds freshness and lightness to the composition.

Effects according to the manufacturer

The following properties are stated by the manufacturer in its materials and are not independently verified data.

  • Refreshing and invigorating effect of the fragrance – the citrus fragrance is used in aromatherapy, diffusers, massage oils and bath products to create a fresh atmosphere.
  • Cleansing effect – according to the manufacturer, the oil helps remove impurities and excess sebum from the skin and hair, which is useful in rinse-off products and products for oilier skin.
  • Antimicrobial properties – the manufacturer states support for a clean appearance of the skin. This cosmetic claim does not replace the preservative system of the product.
  • Cooling sensation on the skin – the manufacturer mentions it for after-sun products and refreshing body products.
  • Brightening of the skin tone – the manufacturer states support for a more even appearance of the skin. The effect depends on the whole formulation and the usage rate.

Use in a formulation

Lime essential oil is soluble in oils and in alcohol and does not dissolve in water. In emulsions, it is added to the oil phase or not until the emulsion is finished. In water-based products (toners, facial mists, shower gels), it is incorporated using a solubiliser, for example Polysorbate 20 or PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil. Test the amount of solubiliser on a small sample, as an insufficient amount results in cloudiness.

Essential oils are volatile and sensitive to heat. For this reason, lime is added to creams and lotions at the end, into the cooled emulsion. In anhydrous products such as oil serums, massage oils or balms, it is mixed in cold into the finished oil blend.

The maximum concentration in the final product is determined by the IFRA standard according to the product category, for example category 4 for perfumes, 5B for face creams and toners, or 9 for rinse-off products. Check the limit for your category before determining the usage rate.

The fragrance of lime is pronounced, so start with a low usage rate and adjust the amount according to a sample. In compositions, it works well to combine it with other fragrance ingredients and to check the stability of the resulting fragrance in the specific formulation.

Suitable for products such as

  • Nail and cuticle care products – cuticle oil, balms, nourishing creams and nail serums. The manufacturer lists lime as a typical ingredient in precisely this group.
  • Hand and foot creams – the citrus fragrance gives the product freshness.
  • Shower gels, bath salts and oils – rinse-off products in which the cleansing and refreshing character of the fragrance comes into its own.
  • Facial care – toners, light creams and after-sun products, always within the IFRA limit for the given category.
  • Hair care – hair oils, mists and hair perfumes, where according to the manufacturer it leaves a fresh citrus fragrance.
  • Aromatherapy and diffusers – on its own or in a blend with other essential oils.

Good to know

Under the CLP Regulation, the oil is classified as flammable, irritant with sensitising potential, with serious long-term health risks, and harmful to the environment. Details on safe handling are provided in the safety data sheet. Work with it in diluted form and away from heat sources and open flames.

Essential oil is not applied to the skin undiluted; it is always incorporated into a carrier oil, an emulsion or another base. For new formulations, it is recommended to carry out a tolerance test on a small area of skin.

Protect finished products containing lime from heat and direct sunlight, and test the stability of the fragrance in the specific formulation. When using it in cold process soap, check the behaviour of the fragrance and its effect on the soap batter on a small sample.

Frequently asked questions

Is lime essential oil soluble in water?
No, lime essential oil does not dissolve in water. It mixes with vegetable oils, waxes and alcohol. In water-based products such as toners, facial mists or shower gels, it is added using a solubiliser, otherwise it stays on the surface or causes cloudiness. Test the required amount of solubiliser on a small sample.
When is lime essential oil added to a cream?
Lime essential oil is added to a cream at the end, into the cooled emulsion. Essential oils are volatile and heat damages them, so if added to the hot phase, part of the fragrance would be lost. In anhydrous products, for example oil serums or balms, it is mixed in cold directly into the finished oil blend.
Will lime essential oil colour the finished product?
At a normal usage rate, lime essential oil does not change the colour of the product. The oil is colourless to pale yellow, and its shade does not show in creams, gels and oils. If a clear water-based product turns cloudy after it is added, the cause is usually an insufficient amount of solubiliser, and adjusting its amount will help.
How much lime essential oil can be added to cosmetics?
The maximum amount of lime essential oil is determined by the IFRA standard according to the product category. Different limits apply to perfumes, face creams, body lotions or rinse-off products, so check the specific value for your category before formulating. In terms of fragrance, a low usage rate is enough, as lime is pronounced, so start carefully and adjust the amount according to a sample.
Is lime essential oil suitable for a diffuser and aromatherapy?
Yes, the manufacturer lists diffusers, aromatherapy blends, massage oils and bath products among the typical uses of lime essential oil. The citrus fragrance is fresh and invigorating and can be combined with other essential oils in a blend. In a diffuser, the amount used follows the instructions of the device manufacturer, and it is never applied to the skin undiluted.
